I find Mitchell's ability to inspire the search for truth and human goodness while holding up the colonization of historical and contemporary society, both rare and provocatively inpirational. The book speaks to all aspects of our being, but it sings most beautifully and resonately to the heart. It is lyrical, clear, crisp, uplifting, and has the simplicity of brilliance. She translates complexities into inherent knowings of the soul, those deep aha's.A wonderful blueprint for transformation!
I didn't know it when I turned the first page, but I have been waiting for Sherri Mitchell's luminous Sacred Instructions for a long, long time. This indispensable guide to the Native perspective on Nature and spirit is beautifully written, with one grace note following another. I frequently had to put the book down so I could ponder and marvel at what I had just read. In its arrogance, our dominant culture has disdained Indigenous wisdom, arguing that it has no relevance in modern society. But now we're finally beginning to sense that something is wrong, terribly wrong, and we don't know where to go for answers. Sacred Instructions is a wonderful place to start. Highly recommended.
As a member of a different minority culture, that grew up “nearby†I really appreciated the commonality these issues addressed. It really hit home on many levels, yet at the same time, the book came from “home/Maine†giving it even more meaning. The cultural issues my community faces day in, day out were evident in this book. After receiving the “instructions†from this book, it has inspired me to once again roll up my sleeves, and to do so with a different approach, with confidence and more guidance.
You can feel the love in this book, even the acknowledgments could make you weep with the respect, gratitude and kindness that Sherri exhibits. First chapter in and I highly, highly recommend this book!Further in now, and the wisdom and truth so clearly laid out is profound. This is such an important book, that it would behoove all of humanity to share.
If you have been feeling overwhelmed by all of the violence (physical, mental, and emotional) in and around us, this book is for you. If you feel like you are operating outside of yourself, always just not grasping the life you know will fulfill you, this book is for you.-Here you will find: Common sense observations about our deeply ingrained cultural flaws. Clear instruction on how to break free of the wounds that keep us all enslaved to our collective pain. Clarity on why you feel so helpless and why it is an illusion that you have the power to break!-Mitchell is an International Human Rights activist whose roots are deeply embedded in her Penawahpskek tribe, Penobscot Nation heritage. This grounding allows her to introduce the general reading public to ideas we have felt but could not articulate, and solutions that feel true even if we were blind to them before. A deep, painful and purifying read that may be just the sacred instructions many need. I did.
For the last many years I have been immersed in the work of waking up to the intrinsic interconnections of life--all people, animals, plants, trees, the Mother Earth herself, the Spirit, all of us one whole. I wrote of this journey in my own life in my book, Finding Our Way Home. So when I read Sherri Mitchell's book, Sacred Instructions, I felt in her a true kindred spirit, as she shares the lessons of relationship and wholeness that she learned from within her Penobscot community and traditions. I was moved by her compassionate heart as she explored the long years of brokenness, the wounding that colonization has inflicted both on Indigenous peoples and on the colonizers themselves. I was inspired by the prophecies she passes on, that speak of the possibilities for healing in this time of such destruction and despair. We need to listen and learn from the lessons she offers--how to move from a culture based on separation and competition, to one based on community and cooperation. How to learn to love the earth, and care for each other. How to trust the inner wisdom that is available to any of us. Thank you Sherri for offering your gifts to the world!
Finally I have come to the end of Sherri Mitchell's tough and compassionate call to the better angels of our nature. I say "finally" because I have absorbed each chapter slowly and thoughtfully. So many accolades have already been offered that I agree with, so I will just add a couple of stand-out ideas that will stay with me for a long time: First, our culture needs a new definition of "warrior." Instead of idealizing warfare, we need to idealize the role of protecting one another and Mother Earth. We need to provide young people with models of serving life instead of death--to cultivate the warriors of tomorrow who will help ensure our survival. Secondly, in this age of Trump, I find great inspiration in Sherri's 80-10-10 rule: "we invest 10 percent of our energy looking at what needs to be changed, another 10 percent holding back the tide of harm that has been created by our previous investments, and the final 80 percent creating a reality that offers compassion, safety, equality, justice and sustainability for all life." Yes! Thank you, Sherri. An important and critical contribution to our common future.
