I found this book to read like a long book report. The author claims to intend to draw connections between the written works of author Anne Perry and her real-life experiences as a convicted murderer. In order to do so, each book that Perry has written is summarized and occasionally a line is thrown in to highlight how Perry's experiences is connected to the work. The book touches very little on the murder, spoils the plots of all the books, and overwhelms the reader with the details about her writing career. The author wanted to show Perry in a different light than most media has presented her, and she is successful at that. I do see her as a woman who made a (big) mistake as a child and has overcome it. But Drayton also spoiled all Perry's work for me, so I feel that I am unlikely to bother to read her work.If you want the details of the murder and trial, this is not the place to find them. But with that said, I don't think the detailed story has ever been shared by Perry. If you want to know how a murderess manages to live near 4 decades undercover but out in the open, you'll be left unsatisfied. If you want a summary of the complete works of Perry, this is it...with a whole lot of detail about the publishing industry thrown in.
I was so excited to read this book, having read Perry and followed the discovery for a long time. I don't think the problem lies in the information gained (very little) but in the author's allegiance to Perry. She doesn't want to offend. Perry herself, in spite of multitudinous interviews, has never revealed much. The best way to get close to her truth is in her character, William Monk. Even so, this story could have been told SO much better. I had to make myself read on through tedious business dealings and plot summaries.
I hate to say this, but this book was practically unreadable. The author spent most of her time describing the plot lines of Anne Perry's books. At not in an insightful or reflective manner. Every once in a while she would throw in a paragraph saying that the novel showed some parallels to Anne's crime or psyche. Overall, a bust!
This is a very good exploration of Anne Perry and her struggle to move forward from the knowledge that she murdered the mother of her adolescent soulmate. The murder and trial is explored in detail, as well as her childhood and her personality and what factors led to the murder. Some thought is given how such a talented good woman could have committed such a horrible act. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I thoroughly enjoyed the critiques of each of her books and how they give insights into her psyche. In one notable passage, one of Anne’s characters explains how easy it is to kill someone by hitting them on the back of the head! (Just get them to reach down for something!!) This is of course how Julia and Pauline murdered Pauline’s mother. I enjoyed them because I have read all of the Pitts and have a passing familiarity with the Monk series. The biography jumps back and forth between her childhood climaxing in the murder and trial, and her life as a successful author leading to the movie Heavenly Creatures which created such a furor around her. This is fine, except that it is haphazardly done. There are important threads left hanging ( her efforts to get television series based on her Pitt and Monk mysteries. Only the pilot was made of The Cater Street Hangman. Why?) Although Anne is a very devout Mormon and her faith has been crucial to her ability to forgive herself create a successful life, how does she deal with some of the negative aspects of that faith that seem to contradict her feminist values? Her mother was not an ideal parent, her and her father’s bad parenting decisions certainly contributed to the tragedy. Yet Anne is unfailingly supportive and protective. Joanne Drayton obviously enjoyed unparalleled access to Anne and her friends and literary partners. It is a very sympathetic portrait, but she does not shy away from exploring her eccentricities and her novels that were not as well-received or as beloved as her detective fiction. In fact, a little less time on her Morman novels would have been welcome. Yes, I get it, these are the ones Anne loves the most and probably give the most clues to her inner life. I also wish her continuing horror at meeting Pauline again had been explored a little more. Pauline Parker has made very much a success of her life and is also respected and liked by her community. One does get the idea that Drayton did not push Anne to talk about anything she did not want to talk about. Some reviewers have bemoaned the fact that Anne has not thrown her self on the funeral pyre of remorse and mea culpas at every opportunity (and for the public's entertainment?). But that is not Anne Perry. She is very reserved, dignified, and controlled. She has expressed remorse and taken responsibility and blame. And yes, perhaps she has blocked out some of the horrific aspects of her participation in the murder. Even finding excuses and justifications (It was the meds!). If that is what she had and has to do to move forward and rehabilitate herself, then god bless her. Would that all murderers released from prison had the strength of character and the resolve to do what she has done. It was very brave and even shocking for Anne to authorize a biography considering her private nature. I hope she is happy with it.
Unlike some others here, I was completely absorbed in the secondary story of how Anne got her ideas, wrote her books, and wove her way through the publishing industry. After all, she is an enormously popular writer and it makes sense that many people, me included, would like to know more about her creative process and the murder mystery series' connection to her shocking crime. I loved that part!Where the book fell a little short for me was the whitewashing of Anne, who committed a horrific crime. She was 15, which is old enough to know better...not exactly a child! She joined the Mormons, who basically told her, "don't worry about it. We'll even make sure your victim goes to heaven." All-rightee then. Perhaps this part just wasn't properly expressed, but I found that a bit shocking in itself. So now she is okay with herself again and hopes everyone else will be too. I don't know how I feel about that. What she did is NOT okay, though there is no question she is a talented writer and she did serve her time in prison. It really didn't make me like Anne at all on a personal level, which seems to have been the intent. It's always there when I read her books now, though I do read and enjoy them. I can't forget that she brutally murdered someone with a brick. There's something evil inside her...isn't there? I don't know! That being said, I really loved this book and could barely put it down. I am taking away one star just because of the moral wish-washiness.
