Reading Ytasha L. Womack's book AFROFuturism is like having a fascinating conversation with a knowledgeable friend while sharing a generous cup of Earl Grey tea, hot.For anyone who has not heard of AFROFuturism, Womack's book is an excellent starting point. For those of us who have been involved in AFROCentric speculative fiction, photography, art or multimedia with a futuristic feel, Womack's book is a delightful confirmation that we are not alone in the universe. Womack did considerable research and her notes at the end provide helpful guidance for readers and writers of speculative fiction who want to get more involved.Womack tell us that AFROFuturism is much more than sci-fi stories about starship captains bouncing throughout the galaxy on sexual conquests. Literature, music, art, dance, politics are all linked to inspire us to create a new future. People of African descent are seeking to go were no "person" has gone before. Each chapter explores a different aspect of AFROFuturism. She manages to meld together anecdotal material, research facts as well as personal insight without being too preachy or lofty. This is not a dry "thesis" written for academic credit, nor smoky, whimsical abstraction. It is a thoughtful document crammed with personal insights.She suggests that the word "AFROFuturism" is fairly new to the cultural scene. It was first mentioned in 1992 by a writer named Mark Dery. Therefore, it would be shorted-sighted and mean-spirited to accuse Womack of leaving out a few references or new activities. AFROFuturism is growing faster than print. Anyone who desires the most up-to-date activities can use Social Media on the Internet.My ultimate rating for Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture should be a 4.5 (but Amazon doesn't allow for .5).

I bought this book right after reading Octavia Butler's "Bloodchild" (which I highly recommend) because I wanted a little more insight regarding black's in science fiction. I have sadly read very little author's that are Black/African American, and I'm glad I'm correcting that. Without spoiling it, I will say that this definitely a book you may not necessarily read for pleasure, though I did. This is one of those books you could take notes in, learn something, use as a reference. This could be a gateway book to other books in the genre of afrofuturism. Of course, I did enjoy it because I learned some history regarding famous artists and where afrofuturism originated from (to an extent) and where that influence has led since. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a little history lesson, some more author's and artists to discover, etc.

Womack does a great job of describing and exploring the terrain of Afrofuturism, although at parts shies away from some internal debates. It feels written for an audience unfamiliar with the field, and as such tries to give a more seamless and coherent picture than may actually exist. Such it is with any cultural movement.A great jumping off point for deeper exploration and later study--especially what may stand at odds with Afrofuturism as presented herein!

There are a few interesting ideas here, but this book is not clear about what it wants to be. It is not really deep dive into the ideas, it is not really a history, it is not really a reading list... it is a bit of all those things but ends up feeling more like a personal testimonial about how cool afrofuturism is than anything else.

I bought this for my partner after we saw Black Panther.He loves it, hasn’t put it down since it arrived. He isn’t one than reads books, mostly magazines & on line news & articles.

Inwas not familiar with many of the forms/venues in which thevsubjects of his discourse and analysis were located. Illustrations, pictures, and photgraphs would have been very helpful

As a self proclaimed Afrofuturist author and artist, I found Ms. Womack's work to be both informative and inspiring. Growing up in the inner city of Cleveland, OH, I often felt alone and isolated while watching Star Trek and dreaming of a better and diverse future. I now feel a sense of community...I have truly found my tribe. :D Many thanks to Ms. Womack for her thought provoking and well researched work. Power Up!

A very good source for reference material relating to Afrofuturism. This is a well written book that get directly to the point of what Afrofuturism is considered and what encompasses its history. I found links to authors and materials that have greatly increase my understanding of the scope and scale of Afrofuturism in the African-Diaspora. This is a must buy !! "BE GREAT CELEBRATE KWANZAA"

About the Author

Sean McNamara spent his childhood overseas in and was exposed to a variety of spiritual traditions. Early incidents of illness and surgery brought on a persistent fear and contemplation of death and of what happens afterward. In his twenties, McNamara became a Buddhist practitioner, using meditation to investigate the nature of consciousness and reality. Because many traditions eventually become rigid and limiting out of a need for self-preservation, and do so at the cost of each individual's unique development, McNamara took a different path. He found lucid dreaming and the out-of-body experience to be especially potent methods for his spiritual inquiry, and free of the dogmatic qualities found elsewhere. He eventually applied his knowledge of meditation to telekinesis to illustrate the themes of interconnectedness and intention to his meditation students. He currently teaches meditation, lucid dreaming, the out-of-body experience, and telekinesis in Denver, Colorado, with the purpose of showing others that spiritual growth is still possible as an independent, self-empowering, and revelatory path. He is married to Cierra McNamara, who founded Mayu Sanctuary, a secular meditation center in Denver.

Very nice and rich in knowledge. The writer knows very well his field. If anyone falls onto the study and practice with this book seriously, will go beyond the scope of this book. ie the writer shown and demonstrates some different methods to go through the 5 levels in order for someone to accomplish the primary stages of telekinesis, because telekinesis does not stop here or any other manual to read. Telekinesis has various and many forms of manifesting through. Not only moving light objects, or enclosed in a glass container. But someone can even manage to walk on water or moving circumstances and events, even re generate the cells of his body, and many more. Its just enough for someone to search and find.

There have been plenty of times when I set up a piece of foil or paper on a needle and tried to move it. This book gave me confidence to try again and it addresses the issue of what to do while putting in the time with it when it isn't moving yet. It isn't every time, because it does take time to learn, but I do consistently get good movement and my foil is under glass. The confidence it gives me carries over to other things in my life which also seem difficult or impossible.

I've very satisfied with this book so far. I'm just messing around with Level 1 and trying to see if I can get a response, but I love the down to earth and rational path that Sean McNamara takes. It's much less about the "Why" and a lot more about the "How" when it comes to Psycho-Kinesis, which is a HUGE rarity when it comes to Alternative Views today. Most books are filled to the brim with shaky explanations on how it all works, and I can speak from experience as someone who follows a more spiritual path, with many of the authors trying to persuade or intimidate you into their way of thinking about the world.This is why I LOVE this book; plenty of exercises and training methods for the mind, which is what I wanted from a book like this. Though I've read the book cover to cover and written notes on the processes, I'm just now digging into the exercises. It's day one so I don't expect miracles, but Sean McNamara's no nonsense and honest way of writing has me feeling that he is very trustworthy, to say nothing of the fact that he has many You-tube videos demonstrating his abilities.As for the delivery, I was amazed. I had gotten the Standard Shipping and was expecting this book sometime around the 24th of June. To my surprise I got it just 3 days after ordering! I am very satisfied with my purchase and would implore anyone looking for a possible path into the Meta-Physical world, one which gives verifiable and measurable results I might add, to definitely pick up this book!TLDR; 5/5, My delivery was incredible and so is the contents of this training manual.

I have not read all of this book as yet, there are exercises to complete along the way,but it is both exciting and challenging to get involved in this activity and I look forward to great success in the future.

We will see after practicing for a while. As a skeptic I must hold some caution to diving into random subjects

This is a little book that will change your life as you understand God's global view. It gives you the tools to see the world without borders.

Jeff Lewis, the author of this study, is a professor of intercultural Christian studies at CalBaptist in Riverside, CA. I have taken his classes a few times, which all have repeating content of God's purpose among the nations; this study was part of a reading assignment for one of those classes.Jeff has this down, and he does a great job of communicating it. This isn't a lengthy, wordy, or overly-written encyclopedia of "God as I see it," like many authors tend to do. This is a short, supplemental study that points out many lengths of scripture that support the idea of God being global and not just a Christian tribal deity.If you have an understanding of God's global purposes that stem from Gen. 1:1 and through the Abrahamic covenant, which continue today, then this is a great study to continue in that perspective. If you are new to the idea that God is not a western/American deity but has a purpose for all the world (including Iran, N Korea, etc), then let this be a catalyst for such a perspective to take you through the door to God's biblical, global vision for history.

My daughter grew up with these books. I was really happy to see this book for my granddaughter. She's only 7 weeks old and it kept her attention. There are very few words on each page so it's perfect for a first book.

I purchased this book for my 5 year old grand daughter. I remember buying these same books when My now 26 & 28 year old sons had these books when they were young. I loved reading to them and I want to pass this onto my grand daughter. I love the Mercer Mayer books.Excellent books.

My daughter started out reading these books 13 years ago and now I have a son. I can tell you that having these books on hand helped her reach her AR reading goal every month in school. She could take the test on the book in 1st grade and really get points and awards in class which boosted her self esteem. We love the art of the newer critter books a bit better than the older ones but the stories are perfect. This time around I plan on getting lots of these books for my son because early reading is so essential!

I got this book for me and my grandson to read. We keep reading it over and over! It is perfect for me and my little 3 year old grandson.

Purchased this item for a mother's day gift for my mother in law. She loves the little critter series and read this to my husband when he was little. I purchased this and wrote on the inside of the front cover with my son's name and happy 1st mothers day as my grandma. This is for her house for her to read to him when he comes over. She was thrilled to open it :)

Book is thin and appears a little cheap but my mother loves reading this book to my daughter. They have a routine of 3 books they read when they’re together and this is one of them.

My 3 year old grandson loves the Little Critter stories and has almost all of them. Since I am the grandma, I thought it would be fun for me to read this one to him. All of the stories are well suited to this age group and the drawings are always fun to explore. He loves the little animal and insect critters that are found on every page, and we make a game of trying to find the spider, the mouse or the grasshopper in each book. Very well written stories.

Not a name I am familiar with in the jewelry business, I came across it by noticing it in an old auction book I had purchased at a Flea Market and it fascinated me to see the wonderful quality of the workmanship and stones that were used in the jewelry. so when I saw the book I wanted to get a closer insight on who the Yard's were and why they managed to make a statement in the world of Jewelry making, the book did answer most of my inquiries and I am happy to read more about the Yards. The wonderful mix of colors and textures that just makes the piece of jewelry something other than ordinary.

I would really recommend this book. The writing is not only about Raymond Young amazing rise to fame but woven in is the story of a by-goneera. The story of this talented artist and his wealthy clients is captivating. The illustrations are second to none. This book was not only special to look at but equally fascinating to read

Within just a few days I've fallen in love with this book. Mary Ann Newcomer's expertise about vegetables and about this region (I live in Idaho) is invaluable. But what also makes this book exceptional is her encouragement and good humor. Intelligent yet personal, she has not just written ABOUT gardening, but has written TO me, a reader who wants to garden.

My son-in-law said that it is great. Has referred to it many time. Lots of good pictures an information.

The scholarly research by art historians and architects for the Canadian exhibition is impressive, which is done without the control of the Disney Corporation. The scholarly nature of the book lends a new dimensionality to the understanding of Disneyland as an innovative artistic development, and a new architectural expression.Unlike other texts I have read about Disney architecture, this one takes on the subject from the art historical perspective examining the process that creates a new architectural form. Other books seem to veer away from this in favor of the new, celebrated corporate architecture at Disney company headquarters, or the replication of the model at newer Disney parks. Nice book to teach beautiful handwriting which is just what my son needs. His handwriting was so sloppy and it is much better after using this book.

I have bought 3 handwriting books for my daughter, who is in 2nd grade and this is by far the best book that I have seen. The activities are focus on positive statements that help to boost her self teem and she loves it because there is a coloring activity and the end of each lesson, which makes it fun.

My son is in sixth grade but his penmanship has always been abysmal. This book is helping him learn to write all over again without feeling like a baby. He's taking his time and working through the book. The coloring pictures are a fun break for him and he's improving fine motor skills at the same time. Highly recommend this book for an older child who needs to revisit the basics.

This is a very simple handwriting book - no gimmicks -- just straight forward copy work. I bought this for my 8 year old (homeschool 2nd grade) since his handwriting needed some work desperately. I've seen a huge improvement even without doing everything the book says (it says to do a lesson every single day without taking a day off). It's great and he can do it himself each day without much input from mom.

The first lesson was easy, but the subsequent chapters became more intense and my child quickly lost interest in devoting the time to complete the lessons because it became frustrating. Perforated pages would be a nice addition to this book. Overall, a great value.

Hard to love a physical therapy item, but this does the job when your occupational therapist says you have to learn how to write with your non-dominant hand.

Great for home school or public school students. You may not know but most school work done today at least in California is on computers or Ipads. This is great for repitition so your child will actually be able to sign a paycheck later in life. Then again they may not exist by then either LOL..

I bought this book for my first grader that was getting some letters and numbers backwards. This book is more than just lines and single letters, and I really liked the handful of extra drawing activities. I would definitely buy this again.

I’ve been through about 5 handwriting books and this is the best. Very clear letters to trace and start off. Positive, first person “I” sentences and words to practice so not a lot of complaining about “boring sentences.” The grey shading to help recognize sizing for lowercase letters is very helpful. There is space to give the practice a grade. When we started off I graded writing but after time I let him tell me what grade he earned so he could see what good writing looked like.ONlY CONS- I wish this author had a part 2 for more of just sentence practice minus the letters. We do one page per day. Some pages are printed two sided while some have a printing practice and a coloring sheet one the back side- which makes it easier to do one a day.

I think this would be a very useful book for experienced investors, SMSF trustees and those just starting out. While the core focus of the book is about how to build a low cost, highly diversified portfolio - to meet your individual risk/rward profile and goals - I also found the author's general knowledge of how the individiual asset classes (e.g. equities, bonds, comodities, currencies etc) operate and inter-relate most expansive and enlightneing. The author's writing style is very easy to follow and I also found that while he is obvioulsy 'pro' ETFs, he was pretty balanced about the strengths and weaknesses of the products and the things we should look out for in contructing a portfolio.

I needed a book to recommend to nephews and friends who are starting out in investing in shares and this book was exactly right for that. I also learned more about the variety of ETFs now available on the ASX.

A very well written reference book on Australian ETF's. It covers all of the different types of ETf's and explains in simple terms their investment strategies and how and where each can be used.The type of hand book that every ETf investor should keep in their desk top drawer.

This is a super helpful book. I work in the finance industry and even this helps me because it makes it all so simple and easy to understand. A must read for all levels of investing ability.

I am Australian, so I was familiar with Burke and Wills. I found the story a little slow at the beginning, but it was very necessary to the telling of the story, and I have enjoyed reading it, Peter Fitzsimons does a great job, putting the reader in the story, I felt like an eye witness, i had to query their logic, why would you walk and struggle when you could have traveled half way by steamer , was the question I kept asking myself, why did they not take more notice of the Aboriginal People they came in contact with, starving in the desert and commenting on how healthy the natives were, what were they thinking it defies logic, but I would not pass judgement on what they did,we live in a different world.

This book was an enjoyable read from beginning to end. We were taught about Burke & Wills at primary school but we never learned the details. What a great book.

Peter FitzSimons take a bow!What excellent storytelling ... it was not easy to put this book down.He and his team have really brought this important historical saga to life.Should be on the top of everyones must read list

This is a well researched account and the narration is really good as well. I commend it to you for a good read on Australian history.

Never fails to deliver a good book

Disappointing that the front cover was ripped.

In the early 50’s, I used to watch a television program hosted by Walter Cronkite called You Are There. The show would re-enact famous events from history and Cronkite would report as if from an actual newscast, with reporters on the scene of the event. The show chronicled events such as the sinking of the Titanic and the Chicago fire. Peter Fitzsimons writes his historical accounts as if you are there, witnessing the events as they happened. Burkes & Wills is another of his books utilizing this style.This review is not going to address the accuracy of Fitzsimons account of the ill-fated exploration of Australia, but rather the writing itself. My review of Ned Kelly received a very negative comment when I said Fitzsimons had done an excellent job of telling Ned’s story. Since I am not from Australia, I cannot attest to the factual depiction of either of these accounts.I can say that I love Fitzsimon’s style. Although his books are lengthy, I found myself engrossed in the telling of the story of Burke & Wills, and felt the emotion of those in this sad tale. The descriptions and detail made this reader feel as if I were there.This book will make you laugh, cry and leave you wondering how this exploration got as far as it did. As the subtitle states, this is a tale of the triumph and tragedy of Australia’s most famous explorers.I highly recommend this book and give it five stars.

For the uninitiated when presented with any book of 600 to 700 pages, it might take a while to get started. I contemplated this for 2 months using the book as a desktop support for my tablet...which was v useful as I feared once I started it, I probably couldn't put it down which turned out to be the case. The author, Mr. Fitzsimons, has written a brilliant story that is as riveting in its telling as it must have been in its execution 'back in the day'. All the trials, tribulations, faults, and stunning achievements of this story that I did not know anything about - but knew the names of these explorers - has presented a book that is near impossible to put down once started. Credit to the author and his research team as it is relentlessly footnoted and has quite a nice style throughout in seeking to present facts with little judgement beyond those facts...but there are chinks in the author's commentary which shows a little bias as to his thinking and persuasions but is of no imposition to the reader as it is ably complemented by a slightly cheeky way of writing. It encourages me to read other of Mr. Fitzsimon's books due to the skill in research, writing, and the stories themselves. I am suitably impressed in the story, and the author and his research team.
