I read Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and loved it. I read Miller's The Dark Knight Strikes Again and liked it. When I heard about Dark Knight: Master Race, by Miller with Brian Azzarello, I was hoping for more of a Dark Knight Returns feeling. And you know what? I did like it. Master Race isn't as good as the original (that would be hard to accomplish), but I enjoyed it a lot more than I remember enjoying more than The Dark Knight Strikes Again. And that's a good thing. With sequels or returns to classic stories, there is a danger involved; so many people enjoy the classic original, that the creators risk alienating fans both old and new. Well, in my opinion, Miller and Azzarello have done a fine job with The Master Race. A quick synopsis: Batman is missing and presumed dead, Superman has removed himself from involving himself in humanity's affairs, Wonder Woman is busy ruling the Amazons and raising her children (a daughter and son). Other heroes seem to be laying low as well. In to this world comes rumor of a Batman sighting, which doesn't sit well with many. Additionally, Lara (the teenage daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman) visits her frozen father at his Fortress of Solitude. While there, she discovers the bottled city of Kandor, and is convinced to take it to Ray Palmer, the hero known as the Atom. The residents of Kandor want to be returned to normal size and Palmer's shrinking technology is just the ticket. But all is not as it seems when the Kandorians return. And thus, the foundation for the story of The Master Race is born.I enjoyed reading this story. I found that Miller and Azzarello had a new and interesting take on the story of the Kandorians, and the tie-in to how superheroes were viewed in this world was nice. The subplots, involving Superman, Wonder Woman, and their children; Batman and his new Robin, Carrie Kelley; or even the cameos by heroes such as the Atom, Aquaman, and Flash, were all complimentary and dovetailed nicely with the main storyline. In fact, I really liked how the other heroes were very naturally brought into the story, rather than forced in just for fan service.In addition to collecting the main comic story, this collected edition also contains nine separate mini-comics stories that ran in the individual comics, each focusing on a side story that adds to the overall enjoyment of The Master Race. Some of these stories focus on heroes, such as the Atom or the new Batgirl, and some show events that happen off the page of the main storyline. All were well done and deserved their place in this story.Overall, I really enjoyed Miller and Azzarello's The Dark Knight: The Master Race. It was a well-written story that added to the mythology of Miller's original The Dark Knight Returns. I highly recommend it to all Batman fans, and to anyone who enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns. It would also be an entertaining read for new fans wondering what all the Frank Miller Batman fuss is about.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Coming from one who believes that The Dark Knight Returns is the best graphic novel ever written and who was underwhelmed by the sequel DK 2 I decided to approach this latest installment of the series cautiously and without high expectations hopeful from some of the reviews here that it may still be worth getting. Overall I think the story isn't all that bad and I can safely say I enjoyed this a lot better than DK 2 and I've also resigned myself to the fact that Frank Miller is probably never going to reach the heights again that he achieved with DK 1. That said, this story does hold up well among what has been released these days although at points the heavily expressionist Kubert and especially so the occasional Miller artwork was jarring at first and needs some getting used to. One does wonder if this was deliberate or just a quick and shabby way to meet some imposed deadline although it's safe to say Jim Lee fans will have a cardiac arrest looking at some of the "artwork" here and so will George Perez if he sees how Wonder Woman is drawn here. As a personal favourite it was nice to see Ray Palmer's Atom play an important role in this story although we also get a few other heroes involved before the end.As for the infamous DC binding the good news is that this hardcover release has a nice dust cover that goes over a nicely designed and different art motif main cover. The spine is glued but I guess for the 300 or so pages here it's sufficient and my copy stays open on a flat surface from the first 10 pages onwards. I don't see any gutter loss on my copy and so at least in this case DC has done alright as far as hardcover binding is concerned.This will probably not make it to my top 10 favourite Batman stories list but that said it may make my top 20 and I like the overall theme of not being taken in by mass hysteria and groupthink that's largely due to mass and social media but to conquer our fears of aliens and to resist isolationism and insularism or to risk mindlessly following and contributing to the selfish agenda of individual leaders whether that of Kandor or that of the "free" world. I especially liked the part where Trump calls for a gigantic net to surround the world to protect it from super aliens; I wonder who he'll get to pay for that? I also found the ending scenes between "fathers" and "daughters" i.e. Bruce/Carrie and Clark/Lara to be especially poignant and satisfying. I suggest if you can to read this after Waid/Ross' "Kingdom Come" so you can to get a sense of how the relationship among the Trinity has improved greatly over the years.Good but not great and yet still overall a fun read.
I thought the story and art were excellent and a worthy addition to the Frank Miller library. Without ruining the story for others Batman and assorted JLA members deal with a rouge Kryptonian Cult (Master Race). Made me feel like I was reading the Dark Knight Returns for the first time. It is that good. If other fanboys or girls didn't like this then I don't know what book they read. The story is engaging and the art is good enough that I will also buy the master race artwork book as well. Do yourself a favor and buy this book, then relax and read it in your Batcave, just don't let Jason Todd read it. He steals things.
While much, much better than Miller's last visit to the "Dark Knight" pool, that's a pretty low bar to achieve. This time along he's helped out by Brian Azzarello on the writing and Andy Kubert on the art, so it's definitely a step up. But the story is nuts, all over the place, jumping from "stunning reveal" to "stunning reveal" with very little connective tissue in between (seems as if the Kryptonians are defeated no fewer than four different times, only to come back a few pages later seemingly unscathed). The characterization is non-existent, something the original was all about (indeed, Miller invented the modern Batman in the original G/N). Overall not a bad read for the price, but you won't find yourself returning to it like the original.
