This pair of books was impossible to put down! BUT the writer used the passive voice so much in Extracted that I did get a little annoyed. Thankfully, he did that much less in Executed. That said, I really enjoyed these books! The dialog between the heroes is freaking hilarious---they are such likable people but also completely bad ass. Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers, and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) needs to read this and direct the movie versions! Whedon specializes in strong female characters, ensemble casts, hilarious dialog, lots of action, and truly good characters who are thoroughly human while still being bad ass, which describes this story. But back to Extracted and Executed...wow! I'm still working out what happened (time travel twists that aren't over-explained, so that puzzling things early in the story make sense later). For compelling escapism with memorable characters, a riveting plot, and a pace that is often as fast as the firefights depicted, read these books!
Like many reviewers here I felt the first book was good but dragged a bit in the middle....this one flows from start to finish, but the key here is I never read the book. I went the audible route and listened to both books while I commuted to work. Hands down this is a must listen book. The narrator uses various British accents and terminology. An audio book is only as good as the narrator and this guy is money...
This is book 2. Book 1, Extracted, had some crazy, non-stop action. Book 2 is a non-stop adrenaline rush. This is not a stand-alone novel, you'll want to read Extracted before reading this one. But you will not be sorry you invested the time. Heart stopping scene after scene move this mind-bending plot along at a furious pace.Oh? You like character driven plots instead? No worries, you WILL fall in love with each and every one of these individual, unique characters. They will engage you at first meeting and wrap you around their little finger (one way or another). ;-)My only complaint is that it's over. NO NO, not the story, but I did finish book 2. I really wanted it to go on and on and on. Of course, part of that was wanting to continue listening to Carl Prekopp's excellent narration. Carl brings this story to life in your car, living room, jogging trail, or any location of your choosing. If you like techno-thrillers like I do, don't miss out on this series.
In "Executed", RR Haywood continues the Extracted series ably begun with his first book. I found his time travel concepts refreshingly original and his characters downright intriguing. The heroes aren't perfect personalities, but neither are they so idealized as to be unbelievable. We learn about their personal histories a bit at a time, in much the manner that real life might unfold between people pulled together in a semi-military organization trying to save the world. Some of the villains are more accidentally evil or personally weak-willed than truly villainous. The plot twists and turns are ably managed as characters struggle with the limits of their particular time travel physics. Some reviewers may be frustrated by the plot loose ends remaining at the end of Book 2. With less skilled authors, I've had that reaction myself. But in this case, I feel more motivation to read the last of the books and complete the story.Due to sexual content and explicit violence in some scenes, some parents may consider this series to be for adults rather than younger teens.
Mr Haywood has followed up his good time travail book with a better one. In this book he has had taken advantage of the ability to use this machine without getting lost in it. With out getting into details that will spoil the book, I will say it has some turns and ideas that work well.If you plan on reading this book - the first in the trilogy is an absolute must, You will be lost without it. After reading the first book I was not shore if I would recommend it to someone, it was a bit disjointed (perhaps by design) and clearly ended like a book twice as long that was split to make you buy the follow up, I hate that. But this book makes amends - it ends without needing to read the next one. The best part is that I will buy the third book because it is a good story and not because I have been swindled into buying a book in three installments.
I am sadly surprised thatthis book seems written by someone else, and starts off at a plodding pace and poor storytelling. It is slow moving, even annoyingly full of details that are not getting me to stay engaged. I would honestly rewrite the whole thing, preferably with the original author or mindset: It's supposed to be an adventure book and there is nothing adventurous in reading about a secret government commando group organizing its attack and the power plays among the bit players...If the author's objective was to frustrate the reader, it was achieved. I gave up on the book and am sorry I purchased it.Once again, I suggest it be rewritten in the original style since I would like to be able to enjoy the rest of the story.
I have read a lot of books over the years and I have to say that this is one of the best books that I have ever read.Let's start with the character development. You have an extremely intelligent insurance investigator, a brutally honest beautiful leader, a war machine, a rogue intelligence operative, and essentially an aging super spy. That's without getting into the supporting characters. All these characters were masterfully development and show that the author has a knack for engineering chemistry between his characters where its seemingly impossible. Then you have the action sequences that are phenomenal. Couple that with a realistic interpretation of science fiction that is explained so simp!y it makes you say, "Well I could write that." But has seemingly never been explained in that way.I can go on and on, but I'll just conclude by say that my hat goes off to you Mr. Haywood and I eagerly look forward to your next book.
