We just LOVE Mercy Watson! So much so, that my son begged to own them instead of borrowing from the library. Both my 6 & 11 year old enjoy the stories. A great first chapter book for young readers too! (Large print, very short chapters). Vibrant illustrations! Thanks to these books, we have a little family inside “joke” from one of the lines that’s used in every book.

My son has struggled with reading so much and was really discouraged. He found Mercy at the local book store and fell in LOVE. He immediately read the entire book and wanted ALL of the Mercy books! Super cute stories, great illustrations and fun. Love them. He wanted me to write to Kate and ask her to write more books!

All of the Mercy Watson and Tales from Deckawoo Drive from Kate DiCamillo are the PERFECT reading level for my 6 year old. She started reading these when she was 5. Great beginning chapter books! Clean and respectful content, silly stories, good word repetition, opportunities to expand vocabulary and practice intonation...we sit and read together and giggle for hours!

This is a great series BECAUSE my child wants to read it. She wanted (and received) them all after reading the first one. This is good news, considering she has not been interested in reading. The illustrations are above par.

My second grade son loves all the Mercy Watson stories. He's able to read some of the story and have me alternately read to him as well. The illustration is excellent and the stories are entertaining and the perfect length. Read them all- your child will be happy with this series.

My daughter is entering first grade, and this book was the perfect reading level for her to tackle on her own. She actually lost it before she finished it (imagine) but instead of moving on, she insisted I buy another copy because she wanted to know how it ended. Magical!!

What a fun read! Mercy is a spoiled little pig that loves nothing more than to eat toast with a great deal of butter on it! It is very entertaining and my girls laugh almost the entire time! My kids are 6 and 3 and it keeps their attention the entire time! We now own all of the mercy Watson books and can't wait for more!

Beautiful illustrations and a fun story. A great introduction into chapter books. We have loved borrowing these from the library for years and finally decided to add the set to our home library.

I especially enjoyed the illustations as well as the authors well informed background given to Lincolns 2nd inaugural address. Mark Levins Preface to the book was especially touching. And have ordered the hard-covered edition as well because I think its that good. Lincoln has always been one of my favorite subjects and this illustrative historical book makes a good addition.

I have studied with some of the finest scholars on Lincoln---Chris Flannery and Mac Owens of the MAHG program at Ashland University, and thus have Lincoln's Second Inaugural in several formats. This edition is exemplary and a must have for every American as are the patriot Jack Levin's earlier editions of The Crossing and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The carefully (and I might say, lovingly) chosen photographs and illustrations bring background and give a full display of the context in which this speech was made.Lincoln had long abhorred slavery, seeing it as a betrayal of America's founding principles in the Declaration> He appealed to all Americans to recommit themselves to, and revive the heritage and liberty they cherished and see its natural extension.Southern powerbrokers, however, had been influenced by evolutionary theories on race and some German philosophy to repudiate our founding principles of "all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator" with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in favor of a feudalistic and race-based slave system which Alexander Stephens saw as the "cornerstone" of the Southern lifestyle. Lincoln tried, in many speeches, notably speeches on the horrendous Dred Scott ruling and the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, to bring Americans together on their founding principles expressed in the Declaration.Mr. Levin's choice of title, Malice Toward None, points to the heart of Lincoln and his Second Inaugural address. Sadly, for all Americans, Lincoln was murdered not long after. Had he lived, North and South might have been truly reconciled sooner and many of the problems of Reconstruction might well have been avoided or at least minimized.Mr. Levin has provided a great service to all Americans in this visual age and hereafter by providing the "pictures of silver" frame for the "apples of gold," of Lincoln's conciliatory Second Inaugural Address. Thank you Jack, and thank you Mark.

Malice Towards None is the third book in Jack E. Levin s trilogy of great moments in American history. The other books in the series are The Gettysburg Address Illustrated and The Crossing dealing with Washington s crossing of the Delaware during the early days of the American Revolution. Jack Levin is the ninety year old year father of Mark Levin the host of a nationally syndicated radio program. The book begins with a good introduction by Mark Levin on his childhood experience with his siblings and two intelligent parent. My own parents made a point of taking my sister and I to nearby sites associated with Abraham Lincoln. Fortunately we lived in Indiana and Kentucky which were close to the sixteenth president s early years on the frontier. Since those distant days I have loved history. Books like Levin s will entice a child or uninformed adult to fall in love with our nation s rich heritage and great men and women. In our age of skepticism and doubt about the future of this abundant and good land many Americans need to realize the precious heritage of freedom and justice adhered to by our past ancestors and leaders. Lincoln Second Inaugural Address in which he spoke of reconciliation with the defeated Confederacy and the promise of malice toward none and charity towards all is one of the greatest speeches ever delivered. The short address resonates with biblical eloquence and profound truth. Kudos to Mr Levin. We hope this is not the final installment in this excellent series!

This is a great work. This is the kind of book that helps get history across to a whole new generation. Also, it helps older generations reignite with the greatness that we once had. This book helps people take another look back at those people that put it all on the line to advance the cause of this country because they loved it and they believed in it with every fiber of their being. Twice Lincoln rekindled the dream that was America. Once when he redefined exactly what our country stood for when he delivered the Gettysburg address. In those 200 plus words he defined why we were at war and exactly what we were trying to preserve and why. With his second inaugural address, Lincoln laid out his whole plan and showed a bloodied nation that healing and forgiveness could be achieved. With his words he could take the sword from the warriors hands and set everybody on a course to peace. It is just a real shame that we never were able to have him to guide the country on that path. It is almost like he came around exactly when he was needed and when his work was done he was called home. This book ignites the felling that this country can be heeled again. This book is very relevant in today's America. Great Job Mr. Levin, thank you.

I was first surprised at how thin this book is. His son has mentioned that this is one in a trilogy but being that this is my first Jack Levin book I don't know how this compares to those in style. Mark had touted the illustrations, but I had imagined that section in the middle of so many books where the pages are thicker and glossier and the images are so well printed. This whole book is that middle section. There are a few pages of brief remarks by Mark and Jack about historical background, then the Civil war era photos and illustrations begin, each with a few sentences of Lincoln's second inaugural address on them. The address is finally printed in its entirety at the end. This unique style is what creates a meditative experience for me, and I'll bet it will for you too. I'm a thirty-something, but this would be great for young adults as well.

"In The New Yiddish Kitchen, Simone and Jennifer have brought the classics back to life, and back to the table. Flipping through the pages will take you back, and cooking these recipes will keep your belly―and your soul―full and nourished."―Diane Sanfilippo, New York Times bestselling author of Practical Paleo and The 21-Day Sugar Detox"Bagels and cream cheese are back! With a focus on high-quality ingredients and solid technique, these recipes respect food, tradition and your health―while serving up deli dishes the Paleo world has been missing."―Melissa Joulwan, The Clothes Make the Girl, author of Well Fed and Well Fed 2"The New Yiddish Kitchen is a treasure trove of beloved recipes. You may just be interested in the amazing grain-free bagel recipes; those alone are well worth the price of admission. However, the real delight in this book is discovering the multitude of equally enchanting recipes, waiting to transport you back to your favorite bagel shop or corner deli. Filled with charming little notes from Simone and Jennifer's bubbes on many recipes, this book is as much a pleasure to cook from as it is to read."―Bill and Hayley Staley, bestselling authors and creators of Primal Palate

I preordered this book last month and promptly forgot about it. Today I was delighted to see it on my front porch. I love this book already and it has only been about twenty minutes. I have already flipped through it twice, and there is a lot to love about this delightful book. The recipes are good, the pictures are amazing, and Bubbe's tips are a lot of fun to read. While the approach is light hearted and fun, a lot of work went into this book. As someone who has problems digesting gluten and casein, I appreciate the science and creativity behind the recipes. I have finally found a recipe for cream cheese that I can eat, that actually looks like cream cheese. If you have been cooking and baking for a long time, you know when a recipe sounds right, and you know that it will turn out right. That was the feeling I had reading this book. When I could spare the time from drooling, I was bookmarking recipes to try. Cream cheese and everything bagels are first on my list. Good bagels are hard for anyone to find, but add in being gluten or grain free, and the task seems almost insurmountable. I was buying a brand I liked online, because locally, it is almost like launching a crusade to find them. They were good enough because they were all I could find that were actually edible. My husband and son promptly went through a case of them, and they can eat gluten, so you know they weren't completely awful. The case price was reasonable, but by the time shipping was added on, those six small bags of bagels cost forty dollars, and who has room in the freezer for six bags of anything? I couldn't eat a lot of them at any rate, because these days, anything with grain flours sits in my stomach like a lead brick. To be honest, a lot of starches have the same effect, but if I eat smaller portions, I can alleviate that symptom. It is going to be really hard to hold back on these bagels though! There are also raisin bagels, plain bagels, chocolate chip bagels, and allergen friendly bagels. In other words, there is one for whatever takes your fancy. There are even bialys. Lots of amazing desserts too, but desserts don't really float my boat. If your name is bread, hello darling, can we talk? I have avoided breads for a long time, so it will be a treat to make these bagels, and I will not be spending an arm and a leg for them. As someone else said, you don't have to be Jewish to love this cookbook. You just need eyes and a keen appreciation for well crafted recipes leavened with a healthy dose of humor. I was also amazed at how inexpensive this amazing book is. I am going to buy a copy for my son who loves to spend time in the kitchen. My daughter in law is also gluten free, but was having problems finding good food that tasted good. Problem solved! Lest you think this book is only breads and bagels, there are also main dishes and desserts. I am going to try knishes after I cure my bagel obsession. I also thought the fish cakes looked amazing. I love the creativity of this book. Tradition gets a new twist, and is all wrapped up in a beautiful package. Hurry and buy this book before I buy them all. It would make a great gift for anyone, and it might get them cooking. Also, matzos and matzo balls. I. Have never tried that most iconic food because by the time I knew about them, I couldn't eat them. It will be really fun and delicious cooking my way through this book. A huge thank you to Simone and Jennifer for writing and compiling this amazing book. It is literally a steal at this price. It is not some flimsy little book, but 256 pages of awesomeness. So what are you waiting for? Buy it already.

I review a lot of Paleo cookbooks, consequently, my bookshelf overfloweth with cookbooks. Nevertheless, when I read about The New Yiddish Kitchen by Simone Miller and Jennifer Robins, I had to have a copy. Not only do I follow a Paleo diet, I also keep a Kosher kitchen. Most Paleo books are awash in pork and seafood recipes. Not this one! The New Yiddish Kitchen features gluten-free and Paleo Kosher recipes for the holidays and every day. This is a beautiful hardcover book with exquisite photography—a photo for every recipe. Additionally, the Bubbes (grandmothers) comment on each dish, throwing in a bit of Yiddish slang.Simone’s and Jennifer’s humor shines through the food descriptions, making one want to try each dish. I’ve only had the book less than two weeks and already have made several of the recipes. More on that later. The book is divided into eight sections: Appetizers and Soups; Grain-free Breads and Crackers; Not-So-Traditional Deli Fare; Pastured Meats and Main Courses; Garden-Fresh Salads and Veggies; Naturally Sweetened Treats; Dairy-Free Condiments and Sauces and Holiday Menus and Tips. There’s even a Yiddish glossary to keep you from going meshuga. Now to the recipes: my husband loves hummus, but the ones in the store are made with garbanzo beans—not Paleo. Jennifer and Simone have created a Roasted Squash Hummus (p. 19) that will make you forget all about “store-bought.” This one calls for cubed butternut squash. I used a box from Costco and saved myself some work. I tried the Challah (p. 52) with success. I bought the silicone challah mold since braiding gluten-free dough is impossible.Next I made the Balsamic Braised Short Ribs (p. 122). This recipe calls for boneless short ribs, which I found at Costco. When the meat is done, remove it to a plate and reduce the remaining sauce by half, then pour it over the meat. The resulting sauce is absolutely delicious! I also made the Savory Lamb Goulash (p. 133) and loved it. Ground lamb combines with peppers, potatoes, carrots and onion and is seasoned with cumin, paprika, smoked paprika and turmeric. The Pan-Roasted Chicken with Figs and Olives (p. 129) was superb. I used bone-in chicken thight for this dish. Next time I’ll use prunes instead of the figs. I served it with Dilly Slaw (p. 163), a delightful slaw variation (be sure to use fresh dill). Also included in the recipes I tried is the Israeli Salad (p. 164). This one, like the Dilly Slaw, keeps well in the fridge. The Pan-Fried Brussels Sprouts with Cranberries and Pine Nuts (p. 168) was a hit with the hubby, as was the Honey Dijon Asparagus (p. 175).So far, every recipe has been very tasty and easy to prepare. Can’t say enough good things about this book. Get yourself a copy. You’ll be glad you did.

This cookbook has saved me from never eating bread again. I'm in my third year of eating a primarily paleo diet. Off and on I also have to resort to more of an AIP diet. The Yiddish Kitchen has so many wonderful recipes (some allergen free for more of an AIP approach when I'm needing that). My entire family loves the bagels!!! An extra bonus is the festival menu planning at the back of the book. While my family isn't Jewish, we do a lot of Old Testament studies with our children and being able to incorporate some of these meals during our history lesson is OUTSTANDING! I can't say enough about this book. Thank you to Jennifer and Simone for collaborating on this piece of work!

So glad this cookbook incorporates cassava flour! My son has a nut allergy and I was kind of afraid that all the baking recipes would be almond flour based. I also love the holiday section in the back.

I was so excited to get this cookbook!! The book is beautiful and very easy to follow. The tidbits by the bubbe's are delightful to read :D The bagel recipe is amazing!! So much easier than I thought it would be to make. I definitely recommend measuring the flours out. But that's just a good idea for any baked goods. It's so exciting to have bagel sandwiches again! I have the next few recipes all picked out to try out next!! I highly recommend this wonderful cookbook. You won't regret the purchase

The Light Years: A Memoir, by Chris Rush

Review

"In this vibrant memoir, artist Rush recounts his strange and colorful childhood and adolescence . . . Rush’s storytelling shines as he travels across the country and back again, searching for truth, love, UFOs in New Mexico, peace, something that feels like God, and a place to call home. This is a mesmerizing record of his journey through adolescence." ―Publisher's Weekly (starred)“As mythic and wild with love, possibility, and danger as the decades it spans, you’ll read The Light Years with your breath held. Brutal, buoyant and wise to the tender terror of growing up, Chris Rush has written a timeless memoir of boyhood in the American wilderness.” ―Emma Cline, author of The Girls"[A] lucid miracle of [a] literary masterpiece . . . I wanted to talk to him about how he managed to come through the tsunami of the wildest memoir I’ve read, not only alive, but seemingly improved. How did he write a first book in such dazzling, sparkling prose―so incredibly deft in execution, so precise and artistic in naturalistic descriptions―and so loving in human portraiture? How did he get brought from the desert, to share with us this light?"―Luke Goebel, Vice"The Light Years Is More Than a Queer Coming-of-Age Story. It’s a Quest for the Divine . . . filled with sentences lit from the inside like [Rush's] paintings" ―Alexander Chee, Time"Rush is a fantastically vivid writer, whether he’s remembering a New Jersey of 'meatballs and Windex and hairspray' or the dappled, dangerous beauty of Northern California, where 'rock stars lurked like lemurs in the trees.' Read if you loved… Just Kids by Patti Smith." ―Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly“Brace yourself: To enter The Light Years you must be willing to be changed. It is, in the end, about the one question we all must ask ourselves―How does one live? In the end the answer is, always, love. You could wait until you are ready to read this radiant book, though how will you know when that moment arrives?” ―Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City “Darkly comic and told with fire and wisdom, The Light Years is an iconic American story, the mad love child of Jack Kerouac, Timothy Leary, and Augustin Burroughs.” ―Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, author of The Fact of a Body“Chris Rush is a gorgeous, evocative writer―able to capture the stifling conventionality of suburbia but also the world of flower children drawn together by spiritual experimentation that all too easily gives way to heartbreak and violence. This moving book becomes a gripping story of resilience and, yes, hope.” ―George Hodgman, author of Bettyville

A brilliant, beautiful, page-turning book.Highly recommended.

Every now and then a memoir appears that makes anyone who has experienced parenthood wonder What the Hell? How did this person survive, and how could parents allow their child to disappear into the unknown? The events in Chris Rush's personal history take place almost 50 years ago, and given the bifurcated nature of the home he grew up in, one can only wonder at his resilience in becoming the respected, honored artist he has evolved into. Chris is the middle child of seven of a successful contractor and his complicated wife whose fiercely Catholic lives include raucous parties attended by members of the diocese of Trenton. The father's work mostly involves construction of churches, but it is his alcoholism that drives the family. Each of the seven goes in a wayward direction, seemingly without any reaction from the parents. But this is Chris's story, and his life of deeper and deeper involvement into the drug culture of the seventies, his being cast adrift while still in his teens and while he is coming to grips with his own sexuality, tells more about his character than that of those loathsome parents. He actually professes love for those two, and more understanding and acceptance than they are possibly entitled to. As he says toward the end Life Shapes a Face, makes it what it is. It is worthwhile to take a peek at his website and see the beautifully unsettling examples of the art he has created.

I had zero expectations going into The Light Years, I barely remembered reading the synopsis. Something about drugs and Tucson was all I could recall. So I decided to just start reading and let the book do all the work. To say I read this memoir at a feverish pace is an understatement. I read late at night and in the early hours of the morning. I even read at work whenever I had a down moment. I had to be with Chris and hear his story. His writing is crystalline and intense, but also simple, devoid of all the extra fluff that usually fills memoirs. I felt as if Chris was speaking directly to me. Piece by piece, he’s looking me in the eyes and telling me his story.Chris Rush, born to an affluent and influential family in New Jersey, is our child guide. This book follows his life from eleven to nineteen years old. His deeply Catholic family is the epitome of 1960s Mad Men style living. The booze flow as easy as the money. His mother is the hostess with the mostest and ignores her children to shop and fill already bursting closets. Though she is aloof and sometimes cruel with her words I feel as if this memoir is for his mother, she is somehow a central character although absent for most of his early life.“When I asked her what was wrong, she sighed. ‘I have a head cold with none of the symptoms.’ She didn’t smile-”His father constantly works and remains an aloof character showing his rotten core when he drinks and at one point threatens Chris with a gun and knife. Chris is unaware of his father’s history at the time. Understanding only comes later.Chris first drops acid at twelve years old, a sacrament placed on his tongue by a sort of drug dealing priest. He bounces around different boarding schools, dealing drugs and eventually getting kicked out because he’s caught kissing a boy in the woods. He tries to go home many times, but his parent’s house is hostile, full of past anger and resentment.I’m suffocating while reading about his life at home in New Jersey and then I’m seeing the world in techno-color when Chris is high out of his mind (which he is for most of this book) out in the deserts of Arizona. One particular scene, his sister Donna is giving birth surrounded by drug dealing cowboys, naked and raw with the power of giving life.“The child, untethered, joins the human race.”This scene is so transformative I wonder if it’s the most perfect piece of writing I’ve encountered in all my years of reading. The cast of characters is too long to go through, you’ll have to read on your own. Owen and The Lieutenant, UFOlogist Gabriel Green and nudist Flow Bear are just the tip of the iceberg.I received this ARC from NetGalley and Farrar, Straus and Giroux

The Light Years is an engaging memoir about the author's life. He spent his teen years in the 70's taking and dealing drugs. Some crazy things happened to him. He survived an overdose, he lived off the grid in Arizona in the mountains, eventually he rejoined society and went on to live a successful life. He got lucky because so many just like him did not make it. It's a fascinating read. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

My wife,Debby, and I were at an Alliance Defense Fund conference at Sedona, AZ, having breakfast with other ADF supporters. The conversation turned to poverty and I started giving ideas from a book I was reading by a popular economist who hangs out with Bono and predicted an end to world poverty in 20 years if we just give a bit more, and in a smarter way, to poor countries. The older gentleman sitting next to me said, "That's completely wrong!" and started to explain how much America has given with such poor results.Of course, I'm not one to be put off, so I said (as the famous economist had said) that America hadn't really given nearly as much as was committed and as I started to explain, the gentleman more loudly said, "That's completely wrong!!" Then he spoke for about ten minutes, explaining how capitalism without a foundation of moral stability (such as the new Russia) almost always fails. I had to agree with that. Then he spoke about how just learning the rules of business isn't enough, how people who have their hearts changed by a relationship with Jesus do so much better in capitalism. I had to agree with that too.Till he was done talking, I'd completely refuted everything I'd previously said and was agreeing with him wholeheartedly, knowing how dopey that made me look. As he wound down, he looked at me and said, "Sorry I got so enthusiastic there, I've just written a book on the subject and am pretty excited about it."Debby and I laughed and laughed as we remembered the situation, as did the others at the table. Me just plodding along, trying to explain the situation to a world expert. Oh well, at least it's not boring being me.As I read the book written by my breakfast companion, Ken Eldred, I was amazed by both his background and the fundamental shift in world missions he predicts. He examines the model of traditional missionaries, looking at the high cost, the number of countries where they are not welcome and how there are often hard feelings by locals about rich foreigners living in their area with no visible means of support. I've struggled with these problems regarding traditional missions as well. He also notes the sense of diminishing returns from traditional missions. On the other hand, almost every country wants economic development. He postulates that businesses run by Christians can affect an incredible numbers of lives. These Kingdom businesses work toward a triple bottom line: profits and sustainability; local jobs and wealth creation; and advancing local church and building spiritual capital (honesty, service, excellence, respect, commitment, value, trust, loyalty and quality). These Kingdom businesses may be tiny one-person operations or huge companies, but this important trend could be one of the greatest mission endeavors ever. He outlines the many ways business people can be involved in this type of work. I'm excited about how I might join in this trend, in some capacity or another, and think anyone else thinking about these issues would benefit by reading this book.

This is an excellent book. I had to purchase it as a textbook for my master's degree class. I'm glad the instructor required this book. It was a very good and I enjoyed reading it.

For anyone and everyone especially if you love the Lord. You could feel his sincerity and see his transparency. This was a really great read and empowering.

Ken Eldred makes the clear the point that we are all in "full-time" ministry if we are serving Christ. The believer called to serve in the business realm has an incredibly high calling and responsibility to the Kingdom and a tremendous opportunity to glorify God that those who work inside a church do not. We are all called to serve Christ full-time no matter where he places us.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2017: Our obsession with where we come from has recently leapfrogged past the genealogy efforts of retired relatives to mail-in DNA tests that can provide the broad strokes of our genetic makeup for less than $100. But, as Rutherford points out in his intriguing exploration of humankind, DNA tests offer only a sensationalized peek at our roots, and the tangled, still-evolving truth is far more fascinating. Armed with his disarming British wit, Rutherford delves into the migration, interbreeding and isolation, and extinction of hominid branches that has shaped the modern human. Holes in our fossil record and the lack of DNA in fossils we’ve actually found still make genome research a challenge, yet the more we learn, the more we have to change our perception of who Homo sapiens are and what we’re made of. Challenging the simplistic thinking bolstered by the media, Rutherford adds both nuance and the thrill of excitement to viewing our species through a wider, stronger lens that can now see deep into our past. —Adrian Liang, The Amazon Book Review

★ 2017 Foreword INDIES Gold Winner “A family portrait for all humanity . . . This enjoyable book has a great deal to say about our genetic code—or, more precisely, about how our knowledge of genetics is misused and misconstrued. . . . [Rutherford] proves an enthusiastic guide and a good storyteller.”—The Wall Street Journal “An effervescent work, brimming with tales and confounding ideas carried in the ‘epic poem in our cells.’ ”—Guardian “Rutherford raises significant questions and explains complex topics well, engaging readers with humor and smooth prose.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review “A sweeping new view of the human evolution story, using the latest science of DNA as the central guide . . . . Recommended.”—Scientific American “Rutherford unpeels the science with elegance.”—Nature “A shining example of science writing at its best . . . will change the way you think about human evolution.”—Newsday “Adam Rutherford’s book is well-written, stimulating, and entertaining. What’s more important, he consistently gets it right.” —Richard Dawkins “One of my big obsessions as a reporter is our expanding understanding of our genetic history, thanks to incredible advances like sequencing Neanderthal genomes. Rutherford, a British geneticist and journalist, presents a great survey of this fast-moving field.” — Carl Zimmer “Genetics is opening up the past as never before—Adam Rutherford puts the genes in genealogy brilliantly.” —Matt Ridley “Adam Rutherford’s A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived is the book we need.” —PZ Myers “[Rutherford’s] head-on, humane approach to such charged and misunderstood topics as intelligence and race make this an indispensable contribution to the popular science genre.”—Apple’s iBooks Best Book of September 2017 “Provides a good survey of the science of genomics and how it's changing the story of human evolution.”—Forbes “An enthusiastic history of mankind in which DNA plays a far greater role than the traditional ‘bones and stones’ approach, followed by a hopeful if cautionary account of what the recent revolution in genomics foretells . . . Often quirky but thoughtful—solid popular science.”—Kirkus “A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived is equal parts informative, engaging, and frequently surprising—a must-read for fans of big-picture popular science.” —Jennifer Ouellette, author of Me, Myself, and Why: Searching for the Science of Self “Rutherford manages to reveal fresh (and controversial) assessments of human history and dispel long-held beliefs with clarity, enthusiasm and humor.”—Shelf Awareness “A rollercoaster tour of human history and evolution . . . Rutherford is a bold, confident storyteller.”—Genome “Magisterial, informative, and delightful.” —Peter Frankopan “Rutherford is a gifted storyteller; he interweaves layperson’s genetics with the personal histories of scientists, explorers, and historical figures to create an extraordinarily readable book.”—Choice

The author really seemed to go off the rails by the second half of the book. I couldn't finish it, hence the one star. The first half regarding DNA studies of early humans was interesting enough, but by the point where he seemed to be arguing that there's no such thing as racial differences or that selective breeding has no effect in human populations (evidently because: we are the world, we are the children, etc.), I had to put it down. The author evidently has some kind of chip on his shoulder because of his half-Indian British background that pushes him to see things through a secular PC lens. Disappointing.

This was an interesting read. It was a little disappointing that genes really are not that informative for a single person but are best described through populations and associated population statistics. The author has a real problem with Christianity and creationists, so much so, he takes every opportunity to share his opinion of them and their intellectual abilities. It was distracting.

While many of the points in negative reviews of this book are well taken, I found the author's approach to the subject to be fascinating. I find the book poorly titled, as it covers much more ground than just the history of our species. The author rightly debunks much of the popular media hype about the impact of genomics in medicine and genealogy, yet he reveals many lesser known and fascinating applications of modern genomics in fields such as human ancestry, revisiting the nature vs nurture question, the geographical migration of Homo sapiens, and their interbreeding with other hominids along the way. Who knew that gene sequencing could tell us much more about human dispersion than archeology? The book becomes a bit Brit-centric in some places (but after all the author is from Great Britain) and some of the chapters could do with some editing, but overall I found this book to be surprising in its broad content and the many interesting revelations of the impact of genomics on what we are finding out about ourselves now, as well as what will be forthcoming in the future.

Whether or not it is a genuinely fun or captivating book, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived demystifies many of the popular misconceptions surrounding the genetics and natural history of humans, and is a good read for anyone wanting to understand the limitations of using DNA to describe who we are and how we came to be. A recurring theme of the book is the tendency of parties to communicate oversimplified or sensational interpretations of genetic research for the purposes of selling newspapers, personalized genetic tests, or even as part of an elaborate legal defense. Rutherford picks apart the often weak scientific evidence supporting such claims, and in doing so provides much of the background and strategy one would need to critically examine a purported ‘scientific breakthrough’ resulting from genetic research. There are also some fun parts sprinkled in about genetics as it relates to human history and prehistory, but readers looking for a lot of, or a highly detailed description of this information will probably be disappointed.

The book presents an update on the advances in the study of DNA. Most of that is good, although some technical terms are not fully explained. It is cluttered with the author's personal baggage on race, religion and political correctness. Some of his arguments are circular. For example, intermarriage between close relatives caused the downfall of the Hapsburgs in Spain, but is a minimal risk for Muslims. Race is said to have no meaning, but DNA from Asians, transferred to mice, caused thicker hair and smaller breasts The first half of the book is the best. The second half is more about PC than science.

My name is Chloe, Ben is my father, and he bought me this book for Christmas. I've always been interested in genetics and heritage. In fact, my mother bought me an Ancestry DNA kit for Christmas, fitting for this theme. In college I have studied anthropology, archaeology, and biology, so I already have some background about what this book is about, but there was so, so much more for me to learn. From the beginning of the book I was enthralled. It is interesting - to say the least- as well as well written, entertaining, informative, and so incredibly funny. I can not stress how refreshing it is to read a history/science book that is funny. So often academic books are stuffy and boring, but this one is probably my favorite. Rutherford feels like someone you know. He shares his life and his experiences about his family in such a way so you don't feel like "okay, this guy is talking about himself too much," but in a way that feels so relatable. If you like anthropology or biology or are just curious to read about a little bit of history, read this book. Absolutely wonderful read, have already recommended it to multiple other people.

This book traces the history of homo sapiens through our DNA. It is mostly about genetics and genomics, and is addressed to the lay reader. This doesn't make it an easy read, but I found it a worthwhile one. The key point that it brought home to me was just how complicated human genetics really are. The idea of a "cancer gene" or an "intelligence gene" vastly oversimplifies; Rutherford makes it clear that many, many different genes affect most traits (including susceptibility to most diseases) rather than the simple one-to-one equivalence that a lot of popular writing implies. I found it an informative and accessible read about a complex subject.
