I'm a huge fan of using novel brain teasers as a form of mental exercise, and boy does Gardner deliver on the goods in this weighty tome. The problems differ widely in content and form. Some can be solved quickly by merely employing just a mental trick or two, such as picking up on a pun or ambiguity. Often, there's a beauty and humour that permeates such problems. Other problems are incredibly technical and academic, but redeemed by the unwavering enthusiasm with which Gardner presents them. For anyone looking for novel mental challenges backed up by an author with a winning personality and genuine enthusiasm for what he does, I'd highly recommend this book.

I don't even know where to start. If you like puzzles and/or math, you'll like this. Here's how you use it (*with two benefits): At the beginning of dinner, read one of the puzzles. This is especially good if you have kids. Talk it through while you work your way through dinner, and read the solution at the end.*Slows down the meal, and stimulates out of the box thinking.

This is a refreshing collection that, while scarcely new (and it admits to being, with scant exception, a rehash of previous material), presents the puzzles in a delightful format. The organization into sections--chess puzzles, physics puzzles, word puzzles, etc.--is refreshing and an incisive aid to locating just the type of tickler that appeals to you at the moment, and the diagrams, typography, and even feel of the paper are all first-class. In summary, this is a comprehensive and handsome volume that would do well on the intelligent person's bookshelf, even if the material isn't as mathematically sophisticated as Joukowsky airfoils.

This is a superb collection of puzzles of all kinds. Anyone experienced or not in the puzzle field should own this book.Martin Gardner is a guarantee for this book's efficiency, and highly educational and entertaining content. 5/5

Classic Gardner!

Definetly challenging for me since I have to revert back to my math classes of 20 years ago. Sometimes a better explanation of how the answer is derived would make it more of a learning experience.

This is one of the best collections of mathematical puzzles that I have seen. Anyone who likes puzzles/mathematics should have this in his/her library.

I came to this book having been exposed to Martin Gardner's puzzles through the Aha! and Eureka! books and a smattering of examples from other places.They didn't prepare me for this. This book is chock full of puzzles and problems in various areas, but only earliest puzzles in each section are on the difficulty level of the Aha!/Eureka! books (or some of his small collected puzzle books) - the latter puzzles are much more difficult and likely to require serious math and lots of pen and paper time.So, I'd recommend this - in fact, I hope more people try it out - just be prepared for serious challenges in math and logic.

I just received the book today and after a first pass-through, I really like it, and I think that it will become the standard reference on Schneider Trophy aircraft, both the ones that flew and the ones that didn't.I particularly enjoy the fact that minor variations, either of different aircraft of the same model, or of the same aircraft at different times, all merited individual three-view drawings. All of these drawings are identified as to date, location, pilot (if applicable) and race number (ditto). Some drawings are more detailed than others, but that is a function of the available source material, and in fact the author provides an appendix showing all the source materials used to create each drawing, with subjective ratings given as to the reliability of the source materials. There are also additional cutaway three-views of many of the later aircraft. Particularly nice is a comparison of the floats on the S.6, S.6A and S.6B.I also like the fact that there are course maps provided for each race, and usually a reproduction of each one's official poster. There aren't too many photos, but with all of the drawings that is not, to me, a big deal. It appears that every aircraft that was ever intended for Schneider appearances is shown, including many that I was unfamiliar with, especially in the 1931-and-later period.The book has a pretty good-looking bibliography and index, and the production values seem very good to me. If you have any interest in the technology of the Schneider Trophy era, I think that you need this book. (I should point out that I have been an airframe design engineer for 35 years, so I appreciate books like this!)

Two criticisms with this volume.Not enough photographs of the airframes and engines and I would have liked more text on engine development.Other than that? This is undoubtedly the seminal single volume history of the Schneider Cup. Each year gets coverage of the aircraft, personalities and circumstances that drove the developments for that year. Each chapter includes obligatory information about the race course, weather, and controversies that may have arose as well. There are plenty of three views of the both the built and the proposed airframes as well.The only possible companion volume to this book might be "Race with the Wind: How Air Racing Advanced Aviation" by Birch Matthews for information on the technical side.This is not a "quick read" book. It's in-depth and aggressive in scope. . Recommended without hesitation for anyone with an interest in in the golden age of air-racing or aircraft developments. Modelers would be well advised to look else where.

I've researched the heck out of the Schneider Trophy and this book contains information I was unable to find anywhere else. I hesitated buying this book because of the price and now I wish I hadn't because I bought other less expensive books that did not contain the info I was looking for and this book contained it all so I could have saved myself time and money by buying it first. If you are interested in the Schneider Trophy this is the book for you.

Mr. Pegram has published one of the great books on the Schneider Trophy era. With great insight and research his book is a must own for anyone interested in the historic series and it's impact on aviation in general. Filled with information not found anywhere else and 3 view drawings of every aircraft built or planned to be built for the Schneider Trophy Races.

I have been fascinated with Schneider Trophy aircraft for almost as long as I can remember. The old Putnam and Hirsch books are longtime treasured members of my library, and I was really looking forward to Pegram's book as the "ultimate" Schneider Trophy aircraft reference, but alas, it falls slightly short. The physical attributes of the book are exemplary. It is attractive, well laid out, and appears to be printed on good quality paper and very well bound. Though I have not read the entire text, it appears that Mr. Pegram is a very knowledgeable and capable writer on this subject. The 3 view drawings are outstanding, and they are indeed what makes this book special. I am very happy to have this book in my collection, but...The only thing keeping this book from being the ultimate Schneider Trophy aircraft reference is the photos. They are few in number, and are so small and indifferently reproduced as to seem to be almost an afterthought. Even the relatively small number of photos would have been OK if they were larger and reproduced with more care. As it is, I will cherish this book primarily for its superlative drawings and text, but will look elsewhere for photos of these wonderful machines.

The most detailed book on the Schneider trophy era that I have read,reflecting 30 years of research by the author. Many pictures with superior scale drawings. A must have book for aviation historians!!

I was excited when I discovered that this book was planned. There hasn't been one on the Schneider trophy for many years, and it promised much.On balance, it delivers, but only just. Without doubt the success of the book comes from the superb general arrangement drawings created by author Ralph Pegram. These alone make the book worth buying. Every aircraft, including those little more than gleams in their designers' eyes, is included, something not done before in any book on this the most prestigious of all early-aviation contests.And Pegram does a good job of qualifying his sources, noting carefully in the books appendices which drawings are taken from detail manufacturers' material, and which are educated guesses.Where the book falls down is in its sub-editing. Spelling and style are inconsistent throughout, which after a while becomes tedious. Attention to detail also various in the text. Once example is my own book, which Pegram refers to by a title that is simply incorrect in the bibliography.So for any aviation or Schneider Trophy enthusiast, this remains a must-buy book, but one that, like many of the aircraft featured in the Schneider Trophy story itself, isn't quite the success hoped for.

I use to make stained glass windows 20 something years ago, and just recently decided to take it up again and teach my 13 year old grandson how to make them. I realized I needed a little refresher, so when I found Basic Stained Glass Making: All the Skills...I was so thrilled. It was great for me, and of course, my grandson who was just starting. I don't make copper foil windows, but the step-by-step instructions for leaded glass is perfect. I ordered some new, updated supplies as well. I definitely would recommend this book!

I purchased three different books on leaded glass and I really only needed this one. This book, by far, is the most straight forward one, directed at the beginner/novice. A very visual book with easy to follow narrative. Another plus, is the typeface used for the text, which was one of a size and density to be easily read (a plus for old guys like me).

Everything I need to know to get me started. Lists all the tools I need, detailed instructions, and great pictures.

I’m happy with my purchase. The book is great for beginners. Very easy to follow with instructions and patterns to learn on. There are check lists and tips for what you need for each project in there. It teaches foil and lead came and what each tool is and how to best use them. If you’re brand new, it’s a good one to read completely through before you start your first project.

This is a great book for beginners (me!). It does not assume that you are ready to commit your life to stained glass art, and are ready to spend thousands of $ for the best equipment and workshop. It gives you the opportunity to try out this hobby. The author explains things very well, and there are tons of photos showing each step of creating a project. Several of the projects are very nice, a few aren't really my taste (tho they may be your taste...); but each one teaches new techniques.Comparing this to "Stained Glass for Dummies:" SGFD assumes a higher level of commitment, and more money. It probably isn't as good for rank beginners, but makes an excellent resource for extra information. And someday you may have that higher level of commitment. It also has many good projects, and a large section devoted to "warm glass" if you're into that.

I've been wanting to try my hand at some stained glass and bought this book to get an idea on how difficult it would be. There are some great projects in here, now to buy supplies and brush up on my measuring skills!

I haven't done any stained glass in a long time. I still have the tools and some glass and I think this book has everything I need to get started again. It is detailed with lots of pictures. I'm excited to begin!

Good overview and some nice templates (although this isn't an activity you can easily pick up by reading a book).

I am using this book in my eighth grade social studies class, although I think I will not assign the chapters on alien intelligence or art. [Not because they are not interesting, but because it is too far a stretch for them to work into the class questions.] I think this version of the book will be challenging and accessible for my 13-14 year-old students, and I am hopeful it will supplement healthy class discussions. I can follow up after I have used it a few months....I am not sure most kids would pick up this book on their own [and arguably those who would might be able to handle the adult version], but I am so thankful to have salient thought and good non-fiction writing available to all my middle school students.A good book for the tween/teen who is ready to think deeply about big issues, while not ready for adult social science verbosity quite yet.

Jared Diamond is a renaissance man. His knowledge of medicine, paleontology, ornithology, and conservation make his point of view fascinating.His ideas, theories and conclusions about human evolution are eyeopeners.We are simply a evolved and special chimpanzee with innate natural tendencies such as killing others of our own species. On the other hand, that specialness also allows us to create communicate with complex language and create radios.Kudos Diamond!

You never get confused with him as he is always so clear and takes very good and funny examples to help understanding. Beside, he knows what he is talking about, an expert in his field. I would call him a great disciple of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Had to buy a thirty dollar plus book to tell me what this book said. Still trying to find out.

It’s a little difficult to know how to review a epochal work like Being and Nothingness. Instead of summarizing the material, a herculean task given its eight hundred pages, I’ll simply provide what to expect and briefly share my opinions on his methods to help decide if this is worth your reading.As I understand him, Sartre is above all a phenomenologist. Engaging with the tradition of Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger most of the text is devoted to descriptions of how Sartre experienced his humanity. Assertions abound and new and complex terminology is developed, all around a new account of human consciousness and the world.Sartre reminds you how little philosophy has changed since Aristotle. In the Metaphysics Aristotle summarized his predecessors and laid down a sweeping account of the cosmos all based on his reflections on language, custom and personal experience.In the hands of a great thinker like Sartre a similar technique does result in some brilliant insights. Moreover, he is undoubtedly one of the primary sources of post-modernism. However, there is also a hard to understand lack of attention to germane material outside of philosophy.For example, there is a one hundred page description of time without any consideration of the unity of space and time in special relativity. While the human experience of temporality is finely illuminated is it too much to ask that it be informed by other disciplines?These oversights leads you to think that in an age making such strides towards understanding the physiology of consciousness, Sartre’s phenomenological approach seems rather dated and unnecessary. Those partial to this type of philosophizing may, however, disagree.Obviously you are in the presence of a great mind but will and should this way of almost solipsistic reasoning about the world endure? It seems to grow increasingly passé as the scientific outlook on humanity advances. In my opinion, for all its genius, Being and Consciousness is more of a relic than a living philosophical text. I wish I had not devoted the time to read it but, again, others will certainly differ.

Jean-Paul Sartre's "Being and Nothingness" is the fundamental text of Existentialism. His examination of ontology constantly reviews previous existential philosophy by building on, and refuting, the work of prior philosophers.Sartre begins with a framework on nothingness and negations. Nothingness does not have being but is supported by being. It comes into existence through the for-itself and allows consciousness to exist. Negations are acts which contain negativity as part of their structure (ex: absence.) He then progresses to an examination of Bad Faith. This is essentially a false consciousness which a person pursues to flee from their own freedom.The most theoretically important part of the book regarding ontology is Sartre's explanation of Being-for-itself and Being-for-others. Being-for-itself is an examination of the works of Descartes, Husserl, etc, into the nature of the individuals being and consciousness. "The Other" is a concept from Hegel that Sartre alters to explain others around us. For Sartre "The Other" is in a constant battle to deprive the other person of their freedom without extinguishing their being.The second half of his treatise deals with issues mostly empirical in nature. Sartre has an impeccable knowledge of philosophy and the physical science up to 1943 (philosophy, biology, psychology, pyschics, etc..) He uses the theory of ontology to reexamine empirical issues where he finds scientific fields lacking. In the end Sartre devises a `Existential Psychoanalysis' (Existentialism) to examine psychological phenomenon through an ontological lens.For Sartre humans are thrown into the world, in a situation, but have absolute freedom over choice. They are responsible for their choice. Whether they chose to actively pursue something or passively submit THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE. This responsibility is not meant as an ethical judgment but rather a statement of fact.Sartre almost completely eschews ethical judgments in "Being and Nothingness." His objective throughout the work is to explain the ontological foundation of being. He reserves 2 pages at the end of the book discussing ethics. His advice is to strive for a synthesis of the being-in-itself with the being-for-itself (a true single consciousness between body and mind.) A person can then strive to attain their values (which are subjective in nature.)Note: Sartre assumes his readers have read essentially every existential philosopher since Plato. He gives brief descriptions of each philosopher's theory but I strongly recommend you read their work before "Being and Nothingness." Sartre also uses incredibly obtuse language (which is made worse through translation.) While not as bad as other philosophers his work forces the person to actively read everything he says. Sartre commands an excellent understanding of science but actively rejects some of its most basic premises because science fails to ask the right questions. While some of the science he talks about has long been disproven for the most part his understanding of science remains valid.Note #2: I read the Gramercy edition.I strongly recommend "Being and Nothingness" to anyone interested in ontology with a strong background in philosophy and the psychical sciences.

I had a major breakthrough with Being and Nothingness, open my head.It took me a while before it sunk into my head, then pow saw how free i can be when i tap into nothingness which in turn is everything. A classic for those interested in Existentialism or any form of contemplation about the reality of being.. Some may criticize that Jean-Paul is Atheistic, however, alot of groundwork for theism is laid by those whom do not believe. Good text!

This is the book where Sartre gives his first and most thorough explanations of Bad Faith, as well as overtly explains his ontology. If I had to recommend one book to understand the philosophy of Sartre, I would recommend this one. It is where we see Sartre's blueprint to the categorization of his world, and I think it is very beautiful.

Do no buy this edition of the book. It is blurry unreadable on newspaper type paper.

I bought the audio book first, then the hard copy. This book is the right balance between "how" the brain works and "how to" make the changes. There is a similar best selling book about The Power of Habits which to me spent too much time on the "how" and not enough on the "how to." Marksman makes no bones about the reality that change is hard, but this is the first book I've read that offers such clear, no-nonsense information necessary to make those hard changes. I'm not completely where I want to be yet, but not only have I made more strides in the last few months than I have before, but some of these changes feel like a part of me already, as opposed to "something I'm trying to do." The investment of time is a bigger issue than the monetary investment when it comes to books like this. This one is well worth the time.

Dr. Markman takes a wide array of research data on self-activated habit change and makes it useful and hands-on. He breaks the book into parts, covering why we have habits (which is fascinating), how habits are formed or change, and then, more importantly, how we can change our own (and even others) habits.I've used some of Dr. Markman's techniques and they have produced success. This is a very good read if you want to see how we form habits and how we might change them. Incidentally, I read it while working out on the Stair Master, thereby forming two new good habits simultaneously.

Some good, straight forward tips on making changes. I like his explanation of the two systems--the stop and go system--in your brain that establishes your behavior. If you like this book and want something very detailed, I recommend "Fast Thinking, Slow Thinking."

I like the scientific approach of the book to explain how the brain works with habits and how to retrain it.

This book waas absolutely so helpful to everyone i n our family. My 17 year old son, who is autistic found it helpful in guiding him with certain troubled areas of his life and my husband found quite a few ideas that uses everyday to keep him moving ahead. I highly recommend this book for anyone who nees some good sound help.

If you really want a break down of habits than this is the perfect book. I read "The power of habit" by Charles Duhigg and didn't like it bc it was only about how habits changed people's lives in a good and bad ways and not actually how to change your habits.However this book tells you exactly how to do that. This book is like a text book written as a self help book. I self help book w/ science to back it up. Not so wannabe guru trying to make money on telling you how to better yourself.

Book is a great addition to the library. I am researching habits as it relates to a service I provide to customers and this is really helping

I saw the book referenced by Dr. Phil on one of his shows. I found the book very engaging, easy to read, and information that was easy to digest and understand, as well as applying it to my personal life.
