I was required to read one of three books for a low level history course. I chose this one just because I had never heard of it and didn't really know anything about the Islamic perspective of the crusades (or really anything). It's astoundingly great and I can't believe that it isn't more popular (though according to Wikipedia it is a translated work that has been under many names, and The Book Of Contemplation is just the latest one). The stories are very visceral and sometimes gory, but there's also plenty of light-hearted stories and lessons to be learned. It's definitely a fun read, but can be a little confusing due to the muslim names and places if you aren't familiar with their structure. However, the book includes a glossary of names, maps, and references for expressions and historical things you might not know. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has the slightest interest in the crusades!

Usama's account gives us a glimpse into the medieval world. I highly recommend it if you are having trouble comprehending how crucially different life was back then. People, literally, think differently, their world is governed by religion and every act is subject to judgement. Mr. Cobb does an excellent job, making hundreds of interesting notes on the smallest details.

I've walked with Jesus a long time and as I get older, I long more and more for our Home. I've read different books and commentaries on, but this one....I hardly have words. It has literally changed everything about my daily interactions with people, my various struggles large and insignificant (annoying people at the airport, for instance), how I pray, my understanding of scripture, purpose, how I spend my money. Literally everything. There is a feeling in the pit of my stomach like the butterflies you get as a kid when you know 'tomorrow you are going to an amusement park' or the night before Christmas. I think this must be what true, genuine hope feels like. I feel like I have this great secret and I'm bursting to tell people.... indeed, I have brought it up in nearly every conversation I have had since reading it. I rarely read a book twice but I'm going back in to see if I missed anything the first time.I read Sacred Romance about 18 years ago, and that, too, was life changing. I feel like we've come full circle. I am grateful for the wisdom and insight God has given John.

I pre-ordered this book a few weeks ago and received an instant online copy when I ordered it. I read it straight through in a matter of hours. The hard copy will arrive today and I'm excited to begin my second reading of it. Very impactful. Reading it felt like waking up.In his book, John describes the coming Kingdom and the renewal of all things. My understanding of "the ending of the age" had, up till now, been very bland and colorless. Not something I could put my hopes into because it actually filled me with hopelessness. This never ending church service in the sky idea that I had been taught time out of mind had been draining me of all excitement about Jesus' return. Not anymore. John's truth-filled, brilliantly written book has restored life and color to my understanding. His description is "deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvelous and yet not strange," as Tolkien wrote. The coup de gras to the hopelessness that I have been battling. There is so much more coming! And that truth has filled me up with joy and expectancy. Thank you so much, John.If you are hungry and hurting, needing hope, and aching for a deeper understanding of the Kingdom, read this. It will change your life.

For a few years now, I have been very interested in understanding what will happen in the end according to Christian theology. I am not talking primarily of various eschatological views, but of our eternal future in the end. Several authors, such as N. T. Wright, Randy Alcorn, and even Dallas Willard have contributed to my understanding that what we normally think of as “Heaven” falls far short of what Scripture seems to say. In reality, we are not going to live somewhere “out there,” but right here, on Earth. A new Earth with no weaknesses or sin, to be sure, but Earth all the same.When I saw an offer to preview and promote John Eldredge’s new book "All Things New," I jumped at the chance to read and review it.Eldredge’s main point is that we must have an accurate understanding of what eternity will be like if we hope to have it influence our lives here and now. He tackles what Earth will be like, the fact that evil will be overthrown, and what we will do forever once everything is restored. And he does so in a very readable way.Let me address those who have read much on this before. For those who have studied the issue, you will probably not find anything strikingly new here. You will also not find as much Scripture referenced as you would in a book by Alcorn, for example.What you will find is what, in my opinion, Eldredge is known for: painting a picture in a very elegant way. Where other books offer perhaps a deeper, more theological and Scripture-saturated understanding of the future, Eldredge also uses movie and story references and takes a cue from them to help us imagine what things will be like. That is not to say that he never uses Scripture; he does. But it appears that Eldredge wants us to take more time to dream and imagine about what everything will be like, to get us to desire it from what we imagine it will be like.It is here that Eldredge succeeds. Let me provide just one example from the book:“If you woke each morning and your heart leapt with hope, knowing that the renewal of all things was just around the corner–might even come today–you would be one happy person. If you knew in every fiber of your being that nothing is lost, that everything will be restored to you and then some, you would be armored against discouragement and despair. If your heart’s imagination were filled with rich expectations of all the goodness coming to you, your confidence would be contagious; you would be unstoppable, revolutionary.“Friends–don’t let anyone or anything cheat you of this hope; it is your spiritual lifeline. You have barely begun to take hold of it. Do not let anything diminish the beauty, power, and significance of this hope above all hopes. Jesus lived the way he did in this world, for this world, because his hope was set beyond this world; that is the secret of his life…” (p. 200; emphasis in original).Amen! One can’t help but be stirred by the above. And that is Eldredge’s claim to fame, in my opinion: the ability to stir us up in our imaginations and get us excited again. Whether he is writing about prayer, the heart, holiness, or, now, the renewal of all things, Eldredge has a way of making us desire again.I believe the best way to develop our understanding of the future is to take the more theological works and combine them with the imaginative ones, blending them together to create a Scripture-founded hope that resides deep within us. Eldredge’s new book is a great addition to this goal.*Note: I was provided a complimentary advanced copy of the book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Eldredge paints a moving picture of the Great Restoration: the dramatic renewal and healing of the Earth (as well as all creation), and what our role is in this redemptive work. I imagine this image has unique value to those who cannot bear the endangering Evangelical ideology that this world is not our home – it’s just a temporary rest stop that will ultimately be discarded like a needleless Christmas tree.I have such deep issues with the popularized Evangelical concept of life after death as “celestial retirement” that I generally stay away from all contemporary literature on the subject. It’s vapid and simplistic, and it’s lost the ability to hold my attention. However, I do not regret making an exception and reading through Eldredge’s depiction of the New Earth.Recommended for anyone who loves this Earth, the myriad creatures that call it home, and wants to grow in the hope that God will renew and heal all creation.

Professors panned this book (even though none of them read but I have read it twice and must commend Sanders for his research and very thoughtful analysis. Whether you agree or not, it will make you think and it will educate you on Jewish thought at the time of Paul.

Sanders's work is a must read for anyone interested in Pauline studies. While I appreciate his work, I do not agree with his covenantal nomism. I think the forensic approach is much better.

As with all sequels, I was highly skeptical it would live up to the first movie. I assure you it does.

Probably the best book on Paul, a very complex character, otherwise just read his letters.

A must classic for those people who want to understand the background of the people who wrote about Jesus of the Bible. A lot of meat to chew but well worth the effort.

Excellent research, fine writing, and easy to follow the premise and minor premises! I highly recommend this work. It is a terrific research tool.

I appreciate Sanders branching out from traditional thought on Paul even if I do not agree with all of his arguments. I agree that Paul's belief was one of participationist eschatology (Paul also believed the end was near): the only way to become one of the People of God was through faith in Christ ("dying to Christ") and the old covenant was no longer sufficient. I agree that Paul had a connection to Judaism but, I do not agree with Sanders keeping with the ideal that Paul was a Pharisee just because Paul says so (he doesn't provide support for this). I found his `covenantal nomism' interesting but, I would like to do some more research on the subject.Sanders' does touch on Paul's break from the Jewish religion and his Hellenistic ideals which was helpful in the quest to understanding Paul.
