I’ve been teaching for 20 years, a certified reading specialist for more than half of that so when I say BUY THIS BOOK it’s not because I don’t have an overwhelming repertoire of teaching tools at my disposal. I’ve never found a resource as practical, concise and results-oriented as this book. If you think you know Guided Reading already (as I did), think again. This book is worth it’s weight in gold!

I am an old 2nd grade teacher who has been using Guided Reading in my classroom for many, many years. I purchased this book on the glowing recommendations of other teachers, knowing that I needed some rejuvenation in my guided reading lessons. It has exceeded my expectations, and offers a very straightforward list of things to include in my 15-20 minute lessons, as well as some exciting ways to engage my students with word solving/study, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and guided writing. It is an easy read, and the spiral binding is a huge help. Do not hesitate if you are considering adding this book to your collection. This book is a 'must purchase' if you are implementing guided reading in your classroom. It offers tips and guidance through the entire process. There are printables and tons of resources to help you along the way.

I am a veteran teacher (more than 10 years) but teaching in a new grade level. This book really helped me streamline my guided reading time and make the most of each meeting. This is a HOW TO book...it breaks down exactly what your guided reading time should look like at every level (K-5). This book doesn't address what the rest of the class will be doing when you're meeting with your groups...there are a ton of other books out there that help with that structure. This is the only book you need to help you set up guided reading. My principal purchased the flip book separately for me, and while it's not necessary, it's a nice addition to have.

I love this book. It has been so helpful in troubleshooting problems in our lit blocks

Great resource overall, however this book includes examples from other sources not included in this purchase so I found it a little misleading. For example, on pages 164-165 it explains how to use a running record from the "Next Step Guided Reading Assessment" which looks like it would be a great resource, unfortunately that means you have to make another purchase and it only seems to come with a unit of other materials that I don't need and it is very pricey.

Fabulous resource and wonderful research to bring our PLC's to the next level. My teachers have been struggling with needing activities and ideas for students who are Pre-A readers, this book thoroughly fits the bill for this.

I have only ever read two books in one sitting; Gene Machine is one of them. As a scientist and former teacher descended from a long line of teachers, I can unreservedly say that Ramakrishnan's writing shows the traits that only the greatest teachers have: an appreciation of what the reader/student may know coming in, a talent for accessibly delivering new and complex knowledge and ideas, a broad and deep reservoir of knowledge to draw from, and a commitment to portraying how acquiring knowledge is as much a personal and societal endeavor as it is a technical exercise.Thanks to the author’s gifts, I was so drawn into the narrative that it felt as if I were experiencing the struggles and victories alongside Venki and his colleagues. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, feeding my cats, all could be ignored - there was important work to do! It made me want to go into the lab and help out, even though, as a biochemist, I knew the ending.But more than an informative, engrossing tale, Gene Machine reveals the deepest, darkest desires and fears that can bedevil the psyche of those who grapple with Mother Nature (as well as each other) to decipher her most fundamental workings. Ramakrishnan shares his feelings, and equally importantly, his feelings about those feelings, with a candor that few people, and I reckon fewer scientists, would ever risk. What shines through in these descriptions is the author's deep affection for the pursuit and a generosity of spirit for all those engaged in that pursuit, "friend" or "foe". There's a lesson in that for all of us: truly committing ourselves to that which is most enduring gives us a much more productive perspective on everything else.I highly recommend this book to anyone, scientist or not, who wants to learn more about what drives people to pursue a deep knowledge of how nature works and what we can do with that knowledge. As science leaps from the lab to our lives, cultures and economies with greater speed and impact every day, it is crucial to understand what is too often misunderstood or misrepresented in our society: the motivations and feelings of those who push themselves to the limit at the cutting edge of discovery. Some of humanity’s greatest blunders have come from failing to understand how scientific research actually works. Gene Machine is a great way to learn about it from a world-class teacher. And it is a jolly good adventure!

Most of the expert reviews of this book mention that it is a modern the successor to James Watson's "The Double Helix"; I would argue that it's a superior page-turner. The story Venki tells is more similar to a novel than nonfiction, which is credit to his skill in making the different scientists and their stories come alive.The only reason this is not a five-star review is because Venki's science writing is... not good. His attempts to explain the details of X-ray diffraction and ribosome mechanics in layman's terms fall totally flat. As a biologist who with casual familiarity with crystallography, even I was totally lost in some parts of his explanations. It turns out that Venki is no Ed Yong.However, the mechanistic details of how crystallography works are generally unimportant to this story. Venki gives a remarkable and unique view into how high-stakes science works in a day-to-day sense, with all the character flaws and triumphant efforts involved. It's a wonderful story that I would recommend to everyone I know.

The material content is good. However, the author spends a great deal of ink talking about other people he learned from and worked with. I'm supportive of this in the sense of giving credit where credit is due, but all the "name-dropping" gets in the way of reading about the science of the ribosome. In fact, the science regarding how the ribosome actually looks and works gets short shrift, in my opinion. Most of the book talks about the "how" and "who" of ribosome structural science. There's not nearly enough time spent on describing how all the parts of the ribosome are put together and how the ribosome function fits within the broader context of cellular protein manufacture. There are a few paragraphs about these issues here and there, but not nearly enough that I could walk away from the book understanding more about this intriguing and essential organelle. Compare and contrast this to the book "Life's Vital Force," which does a superlative job of describing the function, evolution and structure of the mitochondria.I want to call out the last chapter and the Epilogue as being exceptionally good. In these sections, Dr. V. Ramakrishnan does a wonderful job talking about the broader social context in which science happens, the way the Nobel Prize changed his life, and the value of science in general. He also summarizes much of the book's prior narrative and talks about new research into ribosomes, RNA and such.I would rather have seen a narrative that focuses more on describing the science, and relegates the information about collaborators etc. to footnotes or endnotes.

I don't know what I was expecting from this book, but what I got was a pretty honest portrait of the author's travels and journey throughout his career in search of the true structure of the ribosome. What I enjoyed about the book is the details included about the ribosome that were provided in greatest depth towards the end of the book, hearing about the amazing dedication of the author to solve a very specific and difficult problem in a timely manner and the author's honesty about his genuine thoughts regarding different events and even colleagues. What I did not like was the amount of name dropping of other scientists and certain conferences that didn't seem very relevant to the overall story. The style of writing is somewhat engaging, but when compared to other science books, this book is not one that I felt that I had to keep on reading because I couldn't wait to hear what happened. Instead I took my time, enjoyed parts of it and have now moved on to more interesting and engaging books. Overall, a solid read but not spectacular.

The Air Line State Park Trail winds nearly 55 miles from the northeast corner of Connecticut, where the state borders Massachusetts, down to East Hampton in the heart of the state. The pathway is nearly seamless, with only one major gap through Putnam. Over the state border, you can make a contiguous connection to the Southern New England Trunkline Trail, which heads more than 20 miles east to Franklin, Massachusetts. The rail-trail showcases the engineering behind the Air Line Railroad, laid down through this hilly region in 1873 as part of a direct route between Boston and New York. As the railroad’s name implies, the tracks ran flat and straight, like a line in the air. The Air Line employed the finest trains of the day, featuring the Pullman Palace Car, marketed as the White Train for its luxurious white-and-gold decor. The trail feels completely secluded, as it has few entry points and no view of the roads or sound of traffic for miles. A word of caution about the trail’s surface, however: The original ballast covers this 6-mile northern section and it becomes bumpy and rocky at various points. Riders often have to dismount due to the uneven nature of the ballast, so a fat-tire bicycle is highly recommended. The trail ends in the southern outskirts of Thompson, near the border of neighboring Putnam. A gap of 7.5 miles lies between the northern and southern sections of the Air Line State Park Trail. Pick up the pathway again at the intersection of Averill Street and Railroad Street in Pomfret Center, a small village nestled within the larger Pomfret, one of the oldest towns in the state with its incorporation in 1713. Southern Section: Pomfret Center to East Hampton From Pomfret Center, you’ll follow the pathway just over 19 miles southwest to Willimantic, skirting Mashamoquet Brook State Park, Natchaug State Forest, and Goodwin State Forest, which offer numerous recreational options such as hiking and equestrian trails, camping, and wildlife viewing. When you arrive in downtown Willimantic, you’ll find that the trail ends at Jillson Square Park, but with a short bit of on-road riding, you can pick up the trail again just south of the intersection of Bridge Street and Riverside Drive. Traveling west along the Willimantic River, you’ll see the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum in 0.8 mile. For history buffs, its vintage locomotives and railroad buildings are well worth a visit. The museum is also adjacent to a juncture with the Hop River State Park Trail (see page 26), a scenic route heading 20 miles northwest to Manchester. Both trails are part of the East Coast Greenway, which will connect communities along the Eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida. Heading southwest down the trail, you’ll arrive at a fork in Hebron after 8.3 miles. Keep right to stay on the main Air Line State Park Trail; the other option is a 3.5-mile spur to Colchester. Though the trail is primarily dirt here, this section offers many attractions that make it worthwhile. From the fork, it’s 1.4 miles to beautiful Grayville Falls Town Park, which offers waterfalls and wooded hikes. Nature abounds as you continue along the corridor, and you’ll have access to Raymond Brook Marsh and Salmon River State Forest. Numerous bridges offer lovely views, including the Blackledge and Jeremy River crossings. When you reach the Bunk Hill Road trailhead parking, you can take an on-road side excursion of 1.4 miles to reach the Comstock Covered Bridge. Originally built in 1791, it’s one of the last remaining historical covered bridges in the state. From the Bunk Hill trailhead, you’re only 3.6 miles from trail’s end, but there’s still more to see. You’ll cross the Rapallo and Lyman Viaducts, which were originally built in the 1870s and offer stunning views of the surrounding hills and forests. The trail ends in East Hampton, once known as Bell Town for the 30 bell-making companies that settled here. Counties: Middlesex, New London, Tolland, Windham Endpoints: CT–MA state line near E. Thompson Road, 0.7 mile east of New Road (East Thompson), to Riverside Dr. and Old Route 12 (Thompson); and Averill St. and Railroad St. (Pomfret Center) to Main St. between Summit St. and Walnut Ave. (East Hampton) Mileage: 54.6 Type: Rail-Trail Roughness Index: 2–3 Surfaces: Ballast, Dirt, Gravel Directions With such a long trail, there are numerous parking locations. Below are a few options; use the link above or TrailLink.com to find others. To reach the northernmost parking area, take I-395 to Exit 50, and head east on CT 200. In 0.6 mile, turn left onto CT 193 N, and go 1.6 miles. Turn right onto E. Thompson Road, and go 3.1 miles. Parking is available at the trailhead near the intersection of New Road and E. Thompson Road. To reach trailhead parking in Pomfret, take US 44 to Pomfret (about 40 miles east of Hartford), and turn north to remain on US 44. In 0.6 mile turn left onto Railroad St., then immediately take a right onto Averill St. The trail parking lot is on your left. To reach the Air Line State Park Trail in Willimantic, take I-384 to US 6, and continue east on US 6 for 10.8 miles. Continue straight onto CT 66, and go 1.9 miles. Turn right onto Cards Mill Road. In 1 mile, turn left onto Baker Hill Road (which becomes Kingsley Road in Lebanon). In 0.6 mile, the Air Line State Park Trail crosses the road; park along the right side of the road. To reach the southernmost parking location in East Hampton, take CT 2 to Exit 13 and follow CT 66 south 4 miles. Turn left onto CT 196/Lakeview St. and drive 0.5 mile, then turn left onto Flanders Road and drive 0.25 mile. Turn right onto Smith St.; the trailhead is on the left.

I enjoyed this romance so much- the characters, the Hawaiian setting. Bonnie is not afraid to talk about difficult problems and how her endearing protagonists face and overcome them. I would have given 5 stars, but as in all her books, there are SO many obvious typos. Just need to get a couple more beta readers I think? keep writing, though- I love your books!

This story shows you that no matter how rich you are, everyone has things to overcome.I love the tie-in to dyslexia. This problem doesn't kill you, but it certainly can mess with your personal opinions of your capabilities.Thanks, Bonnie, for writing this story.

This was light and easy reading. I like that the other characters from getaway bay series are included in the story.

I’ve been waiting for this book to come out! I loved all the others, and this one was well written also. I was very disappointed that it was a teaser book. I’m really not sure why it was in here, and not just tied into the next one if needed, it was so short. Not going to waste my time following these if the next one is the same length.

Good story, very realistic look at dyslexia. Have never understood bloggers, reporters or people who think more about the public's 'need to know' than how their words may affect a person. Heroine was ok by end of the book.

I loved this book! As with all Elana's books, the hero so sweet and exactly made for the heroine. This book was so hard to put down! I think this has been the best of the series.

I really like how this book shows how an adult with dyslexia sees themselves. I like how it shows with tutoring they can be helped. I also if the romance between Cassidy and Maddox. Love this series.

In the 14 years since I began investing in Real Estate, I've read everything (good) I could get my hands on, and attended countless seminars and live training events. Sadly, much of it is fluff, trying to cram 2 hours worth of information into a 10 hour delivery. Chad's book is just the opposite - the clearly delivered but condensed information is the learning equivalent of drinking from a firehose- multiple readings may be required!

This is definitely a book on retiring early, using real estate investments as a tool but not the only way to do it.The pros: detailed look at what retiring early means, making you assess your lifestyle and income goals, and giving great indicators and metrics about what that will look like in practicality.The interesting: He has profile, real life profiles of those who semi retired or retired early in real estate investing. There is nothing special about them except that they took action - this makes it relatable and real. This isn't a late night commericial selling dreams. Its practical and specific.Notes - it's a long book. Thats not a bad thing since it means he is thorough, but prepare yourself to read it in parts so you can absorb the great ideas in parts. That's what is helping me as I have a short attention span. But if you want a reference, there is no book I would recommend more.Cons - none! Keep reading!Great job! A lot of hard work went into this book and it really shows through!

This is the book I wish I had 45 years ago. I did retire early with real estate and some of the material mentioned in the book I actually had to learn the hard way. I enjoy reading, and my plan for this book is to give it to the younger family members.

Chad's book is one of the best books I have read on real estate. I love that he gives you straightforward advice on how you can get started investing in real estate. As someone who aspires to invest in real estate one day I like that he provides ways you can gain experience while you work on preparing to invest. I also like that he helps you to see where you are financially in getting started. Really love this book and will continue to use it as a resource and reference!

This is one of the better real estate books I have read. It would benefit the beginner to the experienced investor. The author is very thorough and extremely passionate. I love the personal profiles of investors he interviewed to share their secrets of success and let learnings..Although this is a book about real estate, it really is a book about life. The author touches briefly on other aspects such as health, nutrition, relationships. Overall, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is considering getting into the field as well as those who are expreonced.

How many times can you repeat the same information? The author provides plenty of " what to do" but very little "how to do it." For example, in part 7, the author says, " this plan will count on you finding homes at well below market value." Ok, but how does average joe find homes at well below market value? Also, the numbers used for examples were extremely generous. In some cases, the author had homes with mortgages generating greater than $500 in pure cash flow. Anyone in the business knows that these numbers are almost never attainable. The examples are good, but they are too perfect. They are perfect world scenarios that average people are unlikely to achieve. I would just do some google searching and skip buying this book.

Overall, this book is one that I can see myself coming back to as I move through the stages of life that are described within. Trying to remember everything I’ve learned from this read would be impossible due to how thorough Chad is, but that’s a welcomed fact when compared to the countless real estate investing books that exist today. This is something that I would recommend to anyone trying to set themselves up correctly for retiring early with a focus in real estate investing.The Good:Chad goes in debt into most of the topics that he covers in his book. He frequently sites real world examples of how different scenarios will play out and he continually loops his insights back into how different approaches will affect the end goal of early retirement. Peppered in between each chapter, Chad also injects case studies on specific profiles who are utilizing the methods that are described in the pages before. This mix of real world knowledge, and classroom type education is the perfect blend for me.Chad really knows his stuff - He takes the time to set up the reader’s journey on the front end, so that expectations are clear. While going through the book, he frequently sites where we are in the journey and important knowledge and potential pitfalls to think about along the way.The Bad:Like all books, there are only so many pages that you can use to cram all of your knowledge into, and I think Chad falls victim to that very issue. Often times throughout the book, I wanted to know more about the very topic at hand. The good news is that Chad makes up for his brevity in some topics with recommended reading or other websites and blogs to check out. This issue is more nit-picky than anything and it certainly isn’t a hindrance to enjoying the material.Why Read:This book pushed me to start following Coach Carson more closely and since reading this book, I’ve found countless other excellent reads and helpful knowledge on his website, coachcarson.com. In December, 1945, an Arab peasant discovered ancient documents near the town of Nag Hammadi. These represent 52 texts of Gnostic works, such as the "Gospel of Thomas," the "Gospel of Philip," the "Gospel of Truth," and so on. The actual works were dated at 350-400 AD, with the likelihood that they were authored by 120-150 AD.Elaine Pagels does a very nice job of describing the historical context of these documents and the controversy that they engendered in the early Christian era. The early Church leaders worked as hard as they could to suppress and destroy these documents. And, indeed, there was much at stake, as Pagels discusses the matter. Early orthodox Christians denounced these texts as heresy.Among the central issues that divided orthodox Christians from Gnostics included:1. The resurrection of Jesus Christ: Orthodox Christians define it literally as arising from death; Gnostics had another perspective. Also, Christians defined the leaders of the church as the Apostles and their successors; Gnostics demurred.2. Orthodox Christians saw the church hierarchically--religious leaders and then the rank-and-file church members; Gnostics rejected a Church leadership interposed between God and the people.3. Orthodox Christians trended to denigrate women; Gnostics saw God as both male and female.4. And so on.Pagels notes that (page 147): ". . .the discoveries at Nag Hammadi reopen fundamental questions. They suggest that Christianity might have developed in very different directions. . . ."Whatever one might think about the specific points of the Gnostics themselves, Pagels' book does a fine job of outlining what the key differences were between Gnostics and Orthodox Christians. For those wanting to understand the issues at stake in the early differences within Christianity, this is an accessible text and well worth looking at.

I read this years ago right after graduating from high school. This book was a life changer for me. I was heavily indoctrinated in the Catholic church and felt that by even reading this book and daring to speculate about its contents that the church roof would fall in on my head the next time I went to church. Although it was close to heresy for me to read about the early formation of the church, the good news is that I'm still here! The roof did not cave in on me and I continue to be fascinated with the line between historical, man-made doctrine and what went into the Bible as we know it now. Gnostic gospels takes the nag hammadi (sp) scrolls and shows that there were many gospels around the time of Christ. The fact that these gospels were jarred up and buried shows that they were not the favored gospels and possession was tantamount to death. Why were they different? Is it because these gospels talked about finding God within instead of using the priestly class as intermediaries? Or perhaps it was because this group of gospels treated women equal with men? Both concepts were diametrically opposed to the books that survived. So what else is there in these books and how exactly does a religion founded in blood, and reinforced by crusades and inquisitions further the true message of God? This book is a good place to start answering questions like that. Everyone will have their own opinion, but at least by reading the book it will be an informed decision.

All of my life I have felt that something important was missing from my relationship with God. Reading this work helped me to fill in the holes that orthodox Christianity built deep inside. Call it The Mysterys, call it gnosis. Call it what you will, but I found myself and my God when I read this work.

I began this book with a fascination for the ancient Minoan civilization, a keen interest in with the people and cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, and knowing virtually nothing about Gnosticism. What an enlightening and enjoyable book the author has produced. The book is based upon her interpretations of fragments of early texts, written in Coptic during the first two hundred years following the crucifixion. Pagels summarizes not just the writings of these early spiritual leaders, but also the social and political issues of the day.The Gnostic texts, discovered in 1948 buried in a remote Egyptian cave, describe a spiritual tradition of meditation, inner visions, and self-discovery, rather than a quest for salvation. The author's translation and interpretation from the Gospel of Thomas follows: "There is light within a man of light, and it lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness."In Pagels' reconstruction of the period, another profound distinction between the Gnostics and the orthodox view that became the Roman Catholic church, was the participation of women and men as equals in their religious traditions. Mary Magdalen as apostle, is the prominent example. The texts describe God in both masculine and feminine terms with a complementary description of human nature. The book is a fascinating look into the founders and the founding of Christianity.

Simple: Every Christian should read this book. Enlightening and very educational. Answers all those nagging questions you have always had in the back of your head. Because so much is revealed, it becomes very clear why these books were kept of the Bible. Highly recommend to all who are true seekers.

This historical review shows how the early church had to deal with many views of Christ and what his words and life meant and how the early church silenced these voices to reflect the structure that ensured their power, influence and success survived. A must read for anyone who wants to know how the early evolved.
