This book, for what it is, is invaluable. Having read it, I now know All the Facts About Africa (at least through 2011). Before, I knew that Charles Taylor was a bad guy, maybe having something to do with Liberia, and that Tutsis were massacred for some reason, but I was not able to piece together a narrative of how or why it happened. Now, I feel like I have a handle on what's going on in Africa and, importantly, can assimilate future news about the continent. This is like a textbook for an introductory course on African history (and if professors aren't using it, they should.) If I wanted to learn more about Senegalese history, or Ugandan history, it would be a great foundation.It's honestly churlish to complain about a 750-page book that covers 55 years of an entire continent -- but I will anyway. My main complaint relates to its textbookishness: Meredith offers scarcely any analysis. Why is Africa like that? Is there anything the rest of the world could have done to keep it from being such a disaster? (Would even more foreign aid have helped, or would it just have gone into somebody's pocket? Would more peacekeeping missions have worked or would they have just gotten sucked into the whirlwind of tribal politics?) What should the colonial powers have done pre-WW2? (Other than not colonize Africa duh) What should they have done post-war to prepare their colonies for independence? Was there a better way than the one they chose, or were Harold Macmillan and Charles deGaulle making the best of a bad situation?Most frustrating of all is Botswana. The history of Botswana is scarcely mentioned at all (that's not a problem in and of itself. There are a Lot of countries in Africa. The word Mauretania appears only three times in the whole book.) But occasionally Meredith will jump in to mention that almost every country in Africa had trouble with dictators, corruption, economic collapse and civil war, *except Botswana*. What did they do right? Did they have a singularly principled leader? Was it something to do with their ethnic makeup or the basis of their economy? Was it just sheer luck? Comparing Botswana with the rest of Africa would have been illuminating - but instead it's just a tease.Oh well. This is a very good book.

Martin Meredith's history of Africa since independence provides a critical service to the general reader -- telling clearly and comprehensively what has happened in Africa since 1960. In so doing, he covers an vast amount of material. There are at present over 50 African states, and they vary enormously, in terms of culture, resources, history, and on and on. Meredith discusses all of the major and most of the minor countries individually, moving forward through time in what is a triumph of organization. If I want in future to review the recent history of one or another African country -- or of some cross-border phenomena -- I shall know where to turn.It is probably too much to expect an explanation at the end of this chronicle. Mr. Meredith's history presents a harrowing account of war after war, dictator after dictator, famine after famine, and mass murder after mass murder. They differ from country to country, of course, but the pattern of kleptocracy combined with monomania emerges again and again. At the end, one has to wonder why, and Mr. Meredith does not really present many answers. It may not be possible to do so, but I wish he had tried.Upon finishing this book, I went back to Amazon to see if there is another on the same topic -- is Africa's history since independence really so totally hopeless? I didn't find anything of anything like Mr. Meredith's level of seriousness that presented a less pessimistic view, at least not based on writeups and reviews. For now, I remain stunned, and curious.

Mr. Meredith does a remarkably good job of covering more than 50 years of history for an entire continent in very a readable, if sobering, book. It’s not a work of political science. He’s not interested in assessing big-picture explanations for Africa’s problems, such class struggle, or neocolonialism, or economics, or ethnic divisions, or anything else. But he’s able to recount the actual stories of African independence. He doesn’t gloss over the diversity of experience in Africa, and details the different histories of different countries, while also covering the challenges that have faced whole regions or the whole continent. About a good a job as I could imagine anyone doing with this subject matter.

Martin Meredith's "The Fate of Africa" is an extensively researched 700 page tome that takes the reader throughout the African continent in the fifty years since independence from the Europeans who colonized them.There are many commonalities among the many countries covered throughout the book such as: hastily drawn and arbitrary European colonial borders, lack of preparation for post-colonial governance, a group of nationalistic leaders who morphed into autocratic leaders more concerned with power and enriching themselves and a narrow band of cronies at the expense of the state and the people.In this way, Africa shares a common fate.Readers should not be scared off by the sheer size of the book as Meredith has a writing style that flows easily. The pages just seem to fly by once one dares to dive in. Readers end up engrossed in narratives of the great hope of independence following colonization, and the disillusionment that often followed with: personality cults, weak economies, war, autocratic states with weak institutions etc. While rulers got rich, the average African was left to a most dismal fate: struggling to survive.Weighty, but worth the time, if one wants to begin to understand Africa.

Well researched, well written, and well worth reading. The author has done an outstanding job of completely bringing you up to date on the sorry state of most of the countries that make up Africa. And the picture he paints, while fair, is less than a pretty one.

I was happy to get a free kindle version to give my honest feedback about this cookbook. I used to be vegan, but now eat vegetarian. However, I still like make healthier desserts on occasion. This cookbook does a few things well:-It provides a good variety of desserts, including breakfasts and shakes.-It offers some gluten free options as well-It sites sources for each of the recipes, because the recipes in this book were inspired by blog posts and other sources.-The recipes look like they make really yummy desserts!Here's what it didn't do well:-It is sloppily put together. I noticed a typo on the Cacao and Maca Smoothie- it says "Mace" in the title. Oops!-The pictures don't match the recipes, in many cases. I would guess they came from an internet search and I question whether the author actually made all the recipes in here because he definitely didn't take most of the pics. For example, the "Macaroons" (made with coconut) show a picture of "Macarons" (One "o", sandwiched cookies made with almond flour).-The chocolate chip cookie dough recipe shows sprinkles... but they are not in the recipe. But more importantly, if this is meant for eating raw (which I assume because there are no baking instructions) then there should be a disclaimer about eating raw flour at your own risk. Recently, dozens of people across the country have been sickened by e.coli from eating raw dough with flour in it.Over all, I would say this book has plenty of good recipes in it for someone looking for vegan desserts. However, if you are a visual learner and expect the pics to show you how these desserts should look, you might be disappointed.If you found my review helpful, please vote for it.

My wife is slowly converting me to vegan. This book helps with my sweet tooth! Up until now I haven't agreed with any of the "desserts." I can't wait to try more :)

The recipes in this book are delicious and satisfying, especially the chocolate avocado frosting (which I've been using on everything, even swirled into oatmeal). The formatting of some pages is wonky, but I'm sure the publisher will work out those kinks.I received this e-book for free via my participation in theTomoson program in exchange for an honest review.

I just received this as a gift this morning and have already read it from cover to cover. The first chapter gives reasons readers should consider a vegan diet. One word... chocolate. Yep. Chocolate is vegan - as long as it contains no milk, honey, gelatin, eggs, etc. The rest of the book contains delicious, easy-to-follow recipes for different chocolate delicacies - including nutritional information. All the recipes are complete with correct instructions calling for the right ingredients. I didn't see any glaring gramatical errors, either.If you think vegan chocolate recipes are boring, how about an Oreo blizzard? Oh - and speaking of oreos, while that brand is vegan, why not make your own? It's in there! You can even have chocolate for breakfast! I mean, it IS one of the major food groups, right?Most of the recipes consisted of things I already have in the pantry or are easily sourced. They seem easy to follow and a few have only 3 ingredients. Read that as something easy you can make when you are having a chocolate withdrawal that doesn't require getting out of your bunny slippers for a run to the store. I just had to try the 3 ingredient brownies - and they were delicious!Some of the recipes are fit for kingly guests, too! The chocolate Amoretti peaches have my attention for a special brunch!Yes. This book and I are going to be new best friends! I am tickled pink to have received an ebook sample so I could share my honest opinion.

**Some possible spoilers** These are necessary because there is no way to review this book without mentioning some of the events in the story.The closer I got to the end of this book, the more I wondered how this story would be resolved in the few pages that were left. The trouble is, it never was. There is absolutely no way to know how this story ended. My imagination doesn't tell me how this all worked out.It was a good story, as far as the story-telling went. I actually liked the story's progression and wanted to know how it would all turn out.However, as others have said, the parents seemed to lack curiosity about what was wrong with their daughter. Why do they never ask for a concrete diagnosis? Why do they not take her to every doctor in the country until they find someone sufficiently well-equipped to correctly diagnose her? Would the emotional issues with Kate ever be resolved or cured? She seemed to be stuck in a world of resentment and sullenness, with no hope of ever coming out the other end as a healthy functional young woman. We never find out what her diagnosis is. We never find out why she made the accusations she made against her father.There wasn't one single moment in this book when I trusted Kate to be around Josh, nor was there one single moment when Kate appeared as a sympathetic character. I disliked her throughout the book, even though her parents seemed to think the sun rose and set on her.We never find out how Josh progressed through his injury. Did he regain his age-appropriate functions? Was it ever determined that he would always be a step behind every other child in his age group?I'm not aware that the author is a psychologist, so perhaps it's impossible for her to flesh out these characters, emotionally and/or mentally. This does not serve her readers fairly, and that is unfortunate.

Alert: Some spoilers. I quickly devoured this book -- literally could not put it down. Family History is a story of a family that quickly turns from the ideal family to most people's worst nightmares. Ned, the father is an artist and school teacher; Rachel, a mother and art restorer; Kate the popular teen. Until she returns from camp, sullen and changed. Rachel is finally pregnant with a long awaited son, and when Kate drops him in a seeming accident and then accuses Ned of sexual abuse the family falls apart. Much of the start of the novel lays the foundation for this shocking incident, almost unbelievable in its horror. The accusations tear the family apart, and Kate spirals. She is sent to a therapeutic boarding school.But what happened? Was the accident truly an accident? Is Ned innocent? And how will this play out.While the novel was well-written to the point of being very painful to read, the ending was not satisfying, and did not provide the hoped for answers (instead it suggests that these answers will be forthcoming and that Kate is on the road to that). I suppose Shapiro wants us to draw our own conclusions, but I'm unsure if that is fair. It kind of let me down not to know. The ending was a little too pat: the accident was an accident. Ned very probably was innocent. Then why did Kate do what she did? Is there a connection to camp?I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, and enjoyed this one too, so I am inferring that Kate probably was a victim. At camp. And that much of what she did was based on that. But how awful and shocking.

Last week, author and memoirist Dani Shapiro wrote a thoughtful essay on her blog, On Doing What We Can. She was struggling with her task at hand, as a writer. Who might care about what she writes and why should she write, when there are so many crucial issues at stake in the world. She went on to talk about how she felt similar feelings before when her infant son was sick and during the 9/11 attack. Horrific times make us all question our importance in the world and whether what we do and whether our contributions are significant enough. I was so struck by her words and her essay and subsequently read an essay that she wrote years ago, about an accident that her babysitter had with her son, which she also wrote a novel about. The novel is FAMILY HISTORY that she wrote 10 years ago. I thought I had read all her books, several of which are memoirs and all of which have moved me in many ways, to the point that I can say that she is truly one of my favorite writers. And, I eagerly await her new memoir coming out this spring, HOURGLASS: TIME, MEMORY, MARRIAGE.FAMILY HISTORY introduces a young couple just starting their lives together. They move from the hustle bustle of Manhattan to a small town to raise their child, thinking they are going to provide a bucolic lifestyle for themselves and their little family. They have their own family/friend issues, a judgmental widowed mother-in-law, parents who reside in the small town and seem to know everything and control everything, picture perfect best friends whom they can never seem to live up to and envy seems to creep up on them even though they adore them. Their beautiful young daughter is a star student and athlete and then one day everything changes. Add a later in life baby to the mix, a dreadful accident and all hell seems to break lose. Once a happy family, can they remain one.Beautifully written, with characters nailed to a T, this book reads like watching a movie. It is so visual, so real, at times, I wanted to jump into the book and tell them what to do or warn them of what might be ahead. The characters wrestle with feelings that have not been resolved, struggle with issues that they don’t comprehend, however they are intelligent and have the best intentions, perhaps they are just not sure how to get there.

What a great book. I honestly had a hard time setting it down. Yes, it is a book about a British army sniper who holds the record for the longest confirmed kill but it is more than that. From a typical boy to a former sniper plagued by PTSD you are a witness to every step of his journey. I recommend this book very highly.

Confirmed my opinion of the defence forces.....use people up and toss them out like so much rubbish. Same all over the world. I have intense sympathy for Craig ( and his family) and others in his position ( although I have trouble with all the horror and killing). Individuals are expendable to our leaders - when are they in the firing line?!At a time when Craig Harrison should have been receiving the fullest treatment and support from the army for PTSD, he was totally abandoned and worse....he was literally thrown to the wolves severely compromising his and his family's safety.

Very different story than your average sniper tour. The treatment by his military after exemplary service will absolutely outrage the reader. Hatred of the corrupt bureaucratic scum responsible for this travesty is totally understandable and richly deserved. A pox on them all.

Maverick 41 was quite a character, and the first British author I read. His style was very humorous at times. Having read a number of books on snipers, I think this was one of the best. In my day, we had the 1903 Springfield and an M-1. Today, the weapons are much more sophisticated, and can reach further distances. I felt this was a very good read, but was sad in the end when he suffered from his PTSD, as so many of our warriors are suffering from today.

High respect for this guy! Being able to overcome what he went through in life and get as high up as he did through pure hard work!Easy read, not too complicated like some military books can get and good storyI also thought it was interesting to see the military through the British side after reading so many American military books

This was a very interesting read. To read about the changes in his personality from the start of his military career to the end. What he went through takes a very special person. Laying in the weeds and in holes in the ground without moving for days. I don't know too many people who could do that.

This is a great read about what it takes to be a sniper, before and after. It is simply not a job in the service, it is a way of life and will stays with you well beyond your military life. I hope that all the proceeds of this book goes to support the hardships this man and his family has endured.

Perfect for my kiddo in kindergarten. She knows how to write but needs help writing the correct way. Each letter has a larger dot to show the kids where to start the letter and arrows to show which direction they should write in. The only negative is that since it is not spiral bound and since they are essentially laminated paper, the pages keep closing and she has trouble keeping the pages open. We have to put something heavy on the ends so it keeps the pages open...

We love these books and my daughter enjoys them! I recommend cleaning the pages soon after they're done or they're harder to wipe off (need spray cleaner). It's definitely helping with the alphabet learning and letter writing practice! She also enjoys doing the dashed shapes of the animals and other items in each picture.

My son loves this book....The marker could be nicer, as the point is already worn down after about three weeks, but we can always get a new marker somewhere else. Nicely made and will hold up.

I love this book! The plays are deep and meaningful. Normally, my students would never want to read something so deep but since it is a play they are more motivated to do so. I like it a lot better than using novels because most of the plays are fairly short at least for 5th graders and up (They're about 10-20 pages long). This perfect for pulling lessons about story structure, characterizations, themes, and whatnot without having to read a full length novel or a lower level picture book.There is a lot to discuss in these plays. For example, we are reading The Ice Wolf in class today. This is a story about a little Eskimo girl who is rejected by her community because she looks different and was almost threw out in the snow to die by her own father. We were about to discuss the father's internal struggle to follow the ways of his people and the love of his own daughter with my 5th graders.Plays seem to be great motivators for my kids to read and discuss literature in a deeper way. These plays allow you do so in a 'just right' manner. You are putting the kids over their heads with Shakespeare or dumbing it down too much with other kiddie plays out there. I would recommend this for Intermediate/Upper Grades.

Taking a class in children's theater and this book was recommended. Reading these really gives a good perspective on types of plays that are good for children

Whether or not you plan to get into expert witnessing, this is a very interesting look at how things work in the courtroom. The author gives examples of cases he has worked on, courtroom standards by which an expert (and his analysis) is measured, and how to communicate effectively with a jury. He gives examples of how experts succeed and how they can can fail, and shows the methods opposing attorneys often use to discredit your testimony. You can learn a lot about why recent high profile suits and criminal cases turned out in the curious way they did. Real eye opener. Highly recommended book. Couldn't put it down.

Easy to read and understand, even if you aren't a lawyer!

Good book for reviewing the landmark court rulings and providing the legal perspective of how experts function in court. I thought it was a little heavy on the civil side compared to the criminal side of cases, considering that 99% of the people using the text are testifying in criminal court (IAI members testing for Module 4 Crime Scene Certification Board). Overall, I found it to be a useful book to add to the library as a quick reference for landmark cases and appreciated the differentiation of some of the fine nuances involved in the civil litigation side for those criminal forensic matter experts that occasionally find themselves involved in some sort of civil trial after the criminal issues have been resolved. The chapters were well organized and written, with the attempt to make a somewhat dry topic interesting to the reader, and propel the reader to continue on with their reading and digesting the material. A useful text in an area were there is not a lot of "short" texts available that the average reader will spend the time to read and learn the materials.
