I read this book in one day over winter break and look forward to applying its practical, realistic, and strategic methods for our upcoming Festival/Contest season. The text is clear and easy to understand (not dry or dated at all!). As a JH/HS band director I believe the whole book actually applies to me and my students within the modern public school setting. Definitely recommend.

Every instrumental conductor, whether young or old, should take time to read this book. The methodical approach to score study and preparation (as suggested from Stith) are both very informative and thorough. Personally speaking, I found this book convicting as a music educator. I believe good educators ask themselves, "Have my students done all they can to be successful?"; and I believe GREAT educators ask, "Have I done all I can to ensure my students are successful?". Score and Reheasal Preparation: A Realistic Approach for Instrumental Conductors will challenge you as an educator to spend time doing your "homework" before asking the students to do theirs. I will never step-up to my podium again without having prepared as this book suggests. As a result, I believe my students will learn to love music more and see that I am helping them to become a better musician.

As an educator, this book and the resources provided within it have been instrumental in my rehearsal preparation over the last year. After reading this book I found myself feeling inspired to 'dig deeper' with the pieces I present to my ensemble. The Score Preparation Worksheet is an invaluable, time saving tool that provides a critical outline for the score study process. This worksheet is reproducible, and I now find myself keeping spare copies in my rehearsal folder and at home where I can easily begin studying a new score in great detail. After using the worksheets and going through the process, I file the worksheet inside each score. Storing the worksheets will allow for a quick review of the score when I choose to perform the piece again in the future.Mr. Stith's method is very thorough without being overly time-consuming. He guides you through the process step by step, using a popular concert band score in his examples. This text is incredibly useful to music educators who direct large ensembles, and would be a fantastic text for collegiate Instrumental Methods courses. In fact, I wish this text was presented in my Instrumental Methods course many years ago! After reading the book twice, it now remains on my desk at school where I refer to it at least weekly.

Had the opportunity to sit in a session Mr. Stith did at Midwest 2012 and he mentioned this book - so I picked it up. Thorough, detailed, easily understandable, well-organized and most of all HELPFUL. He is also straight to the point, so it isn't a large book. You will probably need to read it 2-3 times to get everything out of it. Wat I'd like to see him also have is an electronic version of his chart/checklist online, but I can make one myself in Word.I highly recommend this book to old directors, new directors and aspiring directors alike.

I used this text in my instrumental conducting class and my students found it very helpful. The book's introduction contains a brilliant metaphor, comparing the tip of an iceberg to conducting a piece of music. The iceberg's largest section, located underneath the surface, is compared to the vast amount of score study necessary prior to that first rehearsal. Gary Stith then takes this concept and develops a systematic approach to score analysis, dividing the process into three phases. He outlines each phase, further breaking the sections into concrete steps every conductor will want to follow. This book provides the tools that will help ensemble directors maximize rehearsals and yield fruitful performances. I heartily endorse it!

What a great book! Its illustrations are colorful and clear, and the text is hilarious. Each dance description gives a brief history of the dance and of the people who made it famous. Then, there are simple step-by-step explanations of each dance, with very clear descriptions. ("[M]ove [your arms] from side to side, like you're drying your back with a towel.") There are suggestions for varying each dance or raising its level of complexity. ("Lean-ins and lean-outs will add a little sparkle...as will shoulder shimmies.") This book will remind you of all the old dances you once knew and will definitely make your next dance party a lot more fun. It's also fun to work your way through the book with your friends in your own living room.

This book is fun for anyone who loves to dance and has a sense of humor. It brings back things that you had forgotten, or that you were never sure of, like the Kid 'N Play. Great to flip through with a friend or a group of friends at a party. The most funny part though, is the voice who give lots of helpful tips and trivia around these dance moves. I bought one for myself and now 3 as gifts. Great gift to someone who needs a pick-me-up and loves to dance, like a mom.

I'm a dance instructor and this book helps a lot for adding a few "twists" to my routines. The moves are classic, illustrations are colorful and fun (even displaying different wardrobes specific to the dance moves), and best of all, you're never short of ideas! Each move is broken down in pieces and the book also gives you recommended music and even precautions. Works great for dance parties too! You know those moves that it seems everybody knows but you? Not anymore! Highly recommended!

I sent out numerous copies of this book as Christmas presents a couple of years ago. Friends still comment on how awesome it is. The "moves" are nostalgic and hilarious. The illustrations are perfect. I dare you not to break into an impromptu dance party after reading.

I like the calendar pictures. The explore characters in pictures, some of which we have seen before, but that's to be expected. If it were just the calendar, I'd give it five stars.The so-called pop-up feature actually requires assembly - tab A into slot A - and it isn't easy to do. It also won't stay together, nor will it collapse as a pop-up book should. Disappointing in that regard.

I love it! I originally purchased the calender for the pop-up Diagon Alley piece, but was thrilled with the calender as well!!! The pages are spectacular, and I love the focus on one character!! It makes me excited to flip to each month! The pop-up Diagon Alley piece is amazing as well. It is definitely going to be a part of my decorations year round. In general, everything produced is put together and developed very well. Definitely looking forward to each month coming!

I was so happy that Amazon offered this product through retailers that had one or two of these special edition calendars remaining! I searched everywhere and should have known that Amazon was my best bet! I did have to pay more than double the cover price to get my hands on it, but it was worth it! I'll be sure to order 2015's calendar before year end to be sure I don't miss out!

This calendar has lots of photos both from the films and behind the scenes - too many! These squeeze the space for actual calendar. The squares on the calendar are too small to write many notes in. Even if that weren't a problem, the pages are too busy for my tastes.

For all the Harry Potter lovers out there this is great that we can still find items of that wonderful story to continue to purchase. This will be a Christmas gift. Always very happy to find anything HP.

So AMAZING!! I was so happy that I purchased this!! I love seeing the stills from the movies as the images coming together in a collage on each page! Very cool.

I love the calendar but the packaging was bad. The calendar was in a box too big for it along with two books that were bouncing about freely with nothing to hold them in place, so the calendar wound up with a bent corner but nothing earth shattering.It would have been nice if the sender would have stabilized them.

I love Harry Potter and this was a great calender with behind the scenes pictures and facts on it. The only bad thing is the fact that they left out some of the main characters and dedicated a whole month to smaller characters, like Slughorn.

What if you were finally able to break through your lifelong patterns of clutter by reading the REAL book...but now you have no access because this reviewed thing has dashed any notion you can change?I've been on a 15-year journey of getting my home under control. Yep, I purchased maybe a dozen books on organizing and the only other one that spoke to me is:Organize & Create Discipline: An A-to-Z Guide to an Organized ExistenceBut I got Marie Kondo's REAL book as soon as I heard about it and it has indeed changed my life. From a little kid, Ms. Kondo discovered that we're not taught how to declutter: we're supposed to just slide into it. Our folks just tell us to clean our room...but don't show us how. For disorganized people like me, it's not intuitive what to do; I keep thinking that I have to be more logical. But the author turns that on its ear: she says trust your instincts--pick up a thing you've been clinging to for years and check if it gives you joy. If not, let it go. Yes, the more you get rid of stuff you don't love, the more you'll be able to see, use and enjoy the stuff you do.Please don't let these exploiting knock-off authors pull a fast one on you. Get the REAL book.

So... I thought I'd try it. I read the book, made sense and I jumped in and cleaned my closet and organized it the way the book describes. I've never, in my whole life been able to keep my closed organized. But its been over a year now and my closet has stayed tidy and organized! I honestly can't believe it. But this method works for me!

The person who wrote this missed a couple of the major points in this book. First, the focus is on JOY, not decluttering, and that is a major difference from other programs. The author totally missed the idea that you MUST do categories in order, and that you cannot change the program. Ms. Kondo is quite adamant about that. Komono is never mentioned in this summary, and the Shinto aspects, like greeting your home when you return, caring for objects, proper folding, are all left out of this summary. If I were giving it a grade, it would get a C. The positives are that it is short and concise.

It was a little repetitive. And even though Marie talks about the things she learned throughout her life, I don't know that all of the stories from her childhood were necessary.

This book is really a great partner in purging your things. Especially if like me you are quit attached to them. I recommend it to everyone I talk to.

If you wan to follow the plan, you really should buy the book. But I found it a bit repetitive and somewhat annoying in spots. But the method works if you follow it.

Disappointed.. thought I was downloading the book.. it's only (like it says) a summary though. Didn't help one bit.

I have found keeping what I love is very different than getting rid of what I don't use or like. Halved my wardrobe immediately. I also did not get the folding thing at first but I have done it with my socks and I feel like I am putting them down for a nap by folding her way!

Fabulous book. New way to organize and have twice the space.

About the Author

A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Chris Champagne is a graduate of the Orleans Parish School system and of the University of New Orleans with a BA in History. He is a writer, performer, poet, comedian, political satirist, radio show host and columnist who has performed his work on stages all over the Greater New Orleans area. He was voted one of 144 New Orleans Characters in 2012 and was voted best comedian in New Orleans in 2013 and 2014. He was a member of National Poetry Slam teams in San Francisco in 1993 and Chicago in 1999. He received artists' residencies from the Alliance of Artists in 2006 and The College of Santa Fe in 2008. Chris is the author of the poetry book Roach Opera {Portals Press 2007}, and The Yat Dictionary [Lavender Ink, 2013}, a book on the dialect spoken by native Orleanians. His family on both sides has resided in New Orleans continuously since the first half of the 18th century.

I appreciate the compact size and rta bus and streetcar info. This is the book I'm going to give to visitors on their 2nd trip to Nola.
