Coming from the Better Business Bureau, I was expecting something to teach me about the "business" aspect of operating an ebay business. There are some helpful things (charts and lists) that my other books didn't have, so it wasn't a complete loss. Not a bad book if you need help with the nuts and bolts of ebay. Well written and thought out but if you are thinking about the Big Island, not so good. As I remember there are only two stories about individuals moving to the Big Island.

A worthwhile and educational relay of a variety of personal experiences from people moving to the different islands. The information and emotions shared gave my husband and I some good discussion material. If you are considering moving to Hawaii, this book should be among the ones you read for your research.

If you want to work as a farmhand for food and $25, then this book is for you. Or if you don't mind moving from rental to rental every few weeks or months, this book is for you. The only things I learned from this book are it's super expensive (already knew that part), centipedes and cockroaches are a part of every day life, and how to transport animals to the Islands. Where is the information on how to get jobs that are something other than agricultural or the service industry? And information on buying a home (not renting!) if you are lower or middle income? Since there are 30 participants in the book, I thought there would be a broader range of experiences, but that was not the case.

It was interesting to read but don't really help me. I don't want to live in Hawaii as a hobo

I was a 15E/21G working at the Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill when we switched over from Pershing 1A to Pershing II. Those were great times. When I saw these manuals come up on Amazon I could not resist. It was fun to flip through the pages and marvel at how much I still retained. The print and binding quality of the manual is very good.

This is the best book I have read on the subject of privacy. It includes an examination of the philosophical, political, moral and technical aspects in a comprehensive yet not overwhelming way. There is little biases or editorializing. The book presents the facts with substance and depth that is refreshing and helpful in deciding what approach to privacy you may decide to adopt.The book builds on fundamental concepts of privacy, provides examples and builds on legal and philosophical points of view. I am using this book to develop approaches to data privacy for a number of organizations.If you work in the arena of data privacy or work with data you must read this book. If you are concerned or curious about the issues of data privacy you should read this book.

I got to Nissenbaum's book via other, less lucid works that cited her. This book looks at the fuzzy, hard to nail down concept of privacy and presents a very useful framework for what constitutes privacy violations and why we think our privacy has been violated sometimes, and not others.Her framework will not map to actual law, the process of regulation is too idiosyncratic and reactive for that. But it will help technologists, marketers and consumer advocates understand when and why we feel firm or government's actions have overstepped the bounds and violated our privacy expectations.

The author's conclusions run directly against the current developments in privacy law coming out of the EU, and are supportive of what one would call a pro-corporate view. As a CIPP certified attorney working in information governance, I do have an opinion on the matter, and think that American law needs to adjust and start looking at privacy as a right to control personal information AND have that access restricted. Had I bought this book when it came out, perhaps I would have given it 4 stars for the scholarship, but if you read it carefully the ideas attack the concept of "individual privacy" with respect to data in almost any way they can. It is troubling that this is the type of thinking currently adopted at the FTC as "newer." I took a course on data privacy law while at University of Miami School of Law in the early 2000's and have major problems with the authors core thesis. Even as a libertarian in some regards, I feel that data privacy should be afforded rights protection and regulated in some fashion as a human right - not through a hodgepodge of separate agencies and laws as it currently is with the FTC and others. To say that the current system is the right way - I'm not convinced by the artful legal writing. This book provides an example of what its like to take a law class with a professor who has an ideological bent: regulatory vs anti, and so forth. Annoyed that I bought this based on the already outdated thinking reflected in its contents, which ideologically opines that things are fine the way they are in a sense AND that we should put the topic of online data privacy rights and so forth to rest. Its propaganda in its own way.

Opposite most defenses of privacy in the modern world, Nissenbaum dismisses any conversation about the hazards of private information in the public sphere. In fact, in her book, "Privacy in Context: Technology, Policy, and the Integrity of Social Life", Helen Nissenbaum tries to abolish the public/private dichotomy, instead stressing the importance of social norms in dictating how information is shared.Nissenbaum studied philosophy from bachelors to doctoral, ending up a professor at New York University where she specializes in the philosophy and politics at technology. She laid the foundation for contextual privacy that the Federal Trade Comission has now begun to champion (http://www.ftc.gov/reports/preliminary-ftc-staff-report-protecting-consumer-privacy-era-rapid-change-proposed-framework). She continues to influence governmental and scientific bodies alike, lecturing on her contextual approach to privacy monthly.But on to the book itself. Nissenbaum does not write to the casual reader—she takes an idea, dissects it, analyzes from several angles (usually citing other philosophers), slowly recreates the original intent in a new light, then masterfully summarizes it in her own way. The book is split into three parts—the first, which I found to be the most engaging section, was a keen description on how information technology has changed the way privacy can be violated. The second remains purely theoretical, describing alternate approaches to privacy and beginning Nissenbaum’s attack on the public/private dichotomy. The third and final part presents in voluminous form her own approach to how violations to privacy should be evaluated.Though the author’s idea of contextual integrity has in some ways revolutionized the modern consideration of privacy, I struggle to agree with one of the book’s core beliefs: that privacy’s defense lies in social norms and expectations. Society’s expectations for informational flows change rapidly and unpredictably, and I doubt any philosophical theory that settles on popular opinion rather than logic or principles to defend its findings.In sum, the book has a great discussion on privacy and the ways it can be approached in modern society, however, the read is not for the faint of heart. With lucidity and skill, Packer takes the reader through a brief history of the Puritan life and purpose. And yet this work is not strictly an historical work. Much of the genius of this book is in Packer's ability to take the reader into the inner workings of the Puritan mind.Like a expert mechanic, Packer opens up the hood and shows the student the "engine" and its component parts within the Puritan worldview. Subjects such as the conscience, revivalism, preaching and the sermon, spiritual gifts, the Lord's Day, and marriage and family are all addressed with thorough documentation.One of the special features of this work are the copious quotations from the original source writings themselves. In each and every chapter, Packer brings the reader into a close-encounter with the very men he calls the "Redwoods" of Christian theology. (Foremost among them are Owen and Baxter, over whose works Packer demonstrates thoroughgoing mastery). The author of the epistle to the Hebrews exhorts the readers in the last chapter to "remember" their leaders, "consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith." There is a value, great value in learning biography of great servants of God in the past, the giants of Christianity; some of whom are the Puritans, whose theology and lifestyle are still relevant to this day, in our days when it is getting real difficult to define and find what and where true Christianity is. Professor Packer has done a superb work in expounding Puritan themes on doctrines, practical theology, which Perkins defines as "the science of living blessedly forever. Blessed life ariseth from the knowledge of God", ministry and evangelism. In regard to doctrines, a particular emphasis was placed on John Owen whom I regard as one of, if not the best dead Christian apologists where his treatises on the doctrine of limited atonement, spiritual gifts, communion with God, the beauty of piety and holiness are treated exquisitely. Pastor Richard Baxter, though somewhat erroneous in doctrines, seems to be a role model of a compassionate, God-serving, people-loving, talk-the-walk, walk-the-talk-type of minister and evangelist where pastors have much to learn from in our days of quick decision, quick conversion, prosperity gospel, emphasis on fun, numbers, and programs in running the church, exhorting people to go to Afghanistan to preach the gospel while the pastor himself enjoys the glamour of rich congregation in Aspen.The beauty of Puritan principles in regard to family, keeping the Sabbath, marriage, and revival are covered impressively as well. The views on family and marriage are sober yet happy ones, for me personally, but I think are good for singles and married couples alike. If Puritan lifestyle were to be summarized in one statement, in my view, it is as follows: "a joyful compassionate, careful, thoughtful, serious, God-dependent commitment to live a life as pilgrims on earth journeying toward the blessed eternal residence of God in heaven, that expresses delight, reverence, worship of God, and display of the glory of God expressed in the gospel, particularly in the work of redemption carried out by the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross." I'm grateful to God to have the privilege to read some of their texts and biographies; some of which I thoroughly enjoy are those by Jonathan Edwards (Christian Pilgrims, Charity and its Fruits, The Excellency of Christ), John Owen (Overcoming Sin and Temptation, edited by Prof. Kelly Kapic and Justin Taylor), Thomas Watson (The Art of Divine Contentment, All Things for Good, A Treatise on the Beatitudes), Jeremiah Burrough (The Jewel of Christian Contentment); and look forward to read more. O how I long to fellowship with brothers and sisters in and be cared under a Puritan-like ministry, and if the Lord ever calls me to be a minister, or work in ministry, I desire to be like Owen when it comes to solidity and depth of understanding of biblical doctrines, and Baxter when it comes to counseling, ministering, loving and caring for people.

The book is a collection of essays on the Puritan's quest for godliness. He covers various aspect of Puritan life and ministry. Some of the essays appear in different collections. The book is challenging and informative as is typical of Packer's books. He quotes the Puritan writers extensively (e. g. Baxter), but he throws in other theologians such as Spurgeon and Augustine as well. The last chapters that focus on the last of the puritans, Jonathan Edwards, is extremely interesting. Packer brings in theology, history and exhortation into his writings. If you don't understand the strength of "Reformed Theology," this book will definitely help.The book is very good, but for me it started out slow because I read some of the essays before. But the more I read, the more I realize what he is trying to do and I am deeply impressed. Packer is giving us a peek into the puritan world view so that we may purify our worship today.
