Love this series, but this book, eh. I know what he was doing, but didn't hold much interest for me.I wish it would of went into more detail on her thoughts and feelings, especially towards Zoe and Perry. They are the central points in her life and they deserved more information on how she felt towards them. He should of also went into details on her interaction with SF after leaving, that is also key. But this seems like a means of getting more money. Take a few notes, put them together and ask people to pay you for them because the previous works are fantastic.
I read this book knowing nothing about it. Shortly into the book I realized it was based off of a previous text. In researching, I found that this was a novelette based on THE OLD MAN'S WAR and it's sequel.I forged ahead with SAGAN'S DIARY anyway and I am glad I did. I didn't think it was possible to combine science fiction and poetry, but this text does exactly that. The thoughts expressed aww so intimate it's as if you've entered someone elses mind - which is the intention I this book all along.I underlined entire passages in this book because they were so beautifully expressed. I even forced my husband to read one section describing intimacy between two people and without knowing anything about this book or its predecessors, he was absolutely blown away.I desperately want to read more about this character and understand what brought them to this place in their life. It is written in reflection of a life butane manages both joy and melancholy at the same time. Brilliantly and poetically done.
I read and thoroughly enjoyed "Old Man's War" and "The Ghost Brigades". Since this book was about the experiences of one of the main characters in both books, I had high expectations of this one.Unfortunately, it is just a flow of consciousness mishmash of short snippets. This makes it largely unintelligible and frustrating to read. I finished it, hoping that it would improve, but it never did.Skip this one.
Reading this short story, I sometimes found myself weeping and laughing at the same time. Because... because it was so moving, so authentic. There is a part, about hands. She just talks about hands, for crying out loud! And I did. I was on a plane, and I cried, because - once again - I was not reading a book. I was listening to a human being. So much more complex than mere words. And yet made of nothing more than words. John Scalzi birthes characters like very, very few writers I have ever read. And we can hate them, love them, fear them, despize them... it's all good. Because they're never just the one thing. They're many things, like you. If you're looking for flashy action and books where you can confortably watch, passive, a plot go from A to B through all the twists you expect, this is not your book. There's nothing wrong with pop-corn reading, this is jut not it. This is a spell, a chain of words that will take you by the gut, the throat and the heart, and rock your world. And the best is, to do all that, it won't even have to tell you anything you didn't already know.
Since being introduced to John Scalzi's work I have been busily devouring everything I can find written by him. To understand this "novelette" you have to have already read "The Old Man's War" series, yet of everything I have read by him (so far) this is the most poetic and beautiful.As an aside, I love the way he slips in references to works by other sci-fi authors. There is even a referenece to one of T.S. Elliot's most famous works in "The Sagan Diary". I'll let you find it on your own.
This is a very different book. In many ways it is a frightening glimpse of a future where we are able to move minds from one person to another and how does this person feel about the transition and how this person sees the world. This story is told by the reader reading this persons diary and how they feel about various subjects. I enjoyed the book as it kept me in suspense about how this story line would end.
I must say that The Sagan Diary left me flat. After four previous non-stop reads in the "Old Man's War" series, I found myself struggling to get through this one. Mainly because I was expecting it to be like the previous four books -- it was not. The structure and format were entirely different. It was intended to be. Where the other four books were from the perspective of the outside looking in, this one was from the inside looking deeper inside. In John Scalzi's previous books I really enjoyed the character of Jane Sagan. Where in the previous books I found Jane to be an uplifting character, seeing things from inside her head was almost depressing. I'm sure some will really enjoy this book. However, for me, it didn't really add much of anything to the original story line. I was glad it was short, and I was glad when I had finished it. Where John Scalzi's other books left me wanting more, this one left me with having more than enough. That being said, I won't let this book dissuade me from reading more of his work. This particular book just wasn't my cup of tea.
I wondered why this book was even written while reading it. It's an interesting insight into Jane Sagan, but not much of a story. You need to get to the end to understand why Scalzi wrote this.
