The book is good for course debates, and that's about it. New editions come out all the time, and each edition is wildly different than its predecessor, which makes for a lot of headaches if you're a professor trying to coordinate the ordering of this book with your college bookstore and your students. If the bookstore happens to get some copies in that are the wrong edition, you're kind of in big trouble. This goes for students who may not have paid that close attention to the edition that they were supposed to order. The book itself is fine, it's really the publishing companies trying to make a buck that mess everything up. I won't use it again.

This book came timely but it isn't spiral bound as deacribed. We specifically wanted the spiral bound copy.

Great book for beginning percussion!

I ordered the book for my 8-year-old who is presently taking drums. I ordered the book on Jan. 5th and it arrived on Jan. 7th which surprised me greatly but impressed me 100%. The condition of the book was better than I had expected. There are class notes made by the previous owner which will be very helpful for my little drummer girl as she progresses. I can truly admit that I am happy with my purchase.

My ONLY concern with this book is that it gives an abbreviated table of contents on here. I bought this book for a young tween that had many questions about Orthodoxy. There are chapters (wonderful for adult knowledge) that are not suitable for children that discuss the Church's thoughts on contraceptives and other things that are of a sexual nature. They are not explicit in the least...I just felt that some questions on condoms or abortion could have lead to questions the child and their parent weren't ready for. This book was a gift. Just wanted to give parents a heads up before handing this book to their 10 year old. LOL. But, my priest was EXTREMELY excited about this book and ended up getting it as a Pascha gift since I couldn't give it to a child. Wonderful book!Brilliant for an initial look into Orthodoxy or for those who have been in the Church for years. It gives the knowledge of a theologian and puts it into words a child could appreciate. Love it. Doesn't talk down to you, but doesn't lose you in theological topics beyond your comprehension.

Excellent book - Glory to God in the Highest.

I am new to the Orthodox faith and as you can guess as a catechumen I have lots and lots of questions, and am very thirsty for information re: the various prayers, worship styles, history, customs, traditions and rituals associated with Orthodox Christianity.Mind you, I firmly believe that all questions re: the Church should be first addressed to your priest or spiritual father, but if they aren't available or you can't wait...then this book I feel makes a good secondary source to get answers until you can talk to 'em! I found that this book is very detailed but written in a way that a lay person will understand.I especially appreciated the section on the Holy Mysteries, and the explanations of the various sacraments. They even have a recipe for making Phosphora, that surprised me for some reason! I also found the chapter on the church calendar very helpful, too. Mind you, much of this stuff I realize that merely reading doesn't truly prepare you for (as I've yet to experience a Great and Holy Week yet in the church) but at least I'll have something of an idea of what to expect when the time comes.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH A TO Z by Fr George Grube is meant to be a "practical handbook of beliefs, liturgy, sacraments, customs, theology, history, and prayers for Orthodox Christians." The work does cover a wide range of issues that cathecumens will wish to know more about. However, I found it generally disappointing.The book contains thirteen chapters. The first, "What We Believe" begins with the most concise statement of faith we are generally already aware of, the Nicene Creed, before elaborating on its theology. The second chapter, "Living as Orthodox Christians", is simply a long quotation from Bishop Averky on the pious life. The third chapter discusses prayer, including some little-known offices. "Gifts of the Holy Spirit" lays out various vices and the virtues that overcome them. The following chapters "Fasting" and "Worship" are a simple presentation of what behaviours are licit or not in church and during fasting periods. "The Holy Mysteries", by far the longest chapter of the book, is an exploration of the meaning of each of the sacraments. "The Bible and Orthodoxy" is a short bit on what role the Bible has within the Eastern Orthodox tradition and how to read it. Chapter nine "The Church Teaches Morality" may be the most interesting chapter for mere inquirers, as it lays out the Orthodox opinion on today's important social issues like homosexuality, abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia. Chapter ten, "The Setting for Worship" is an exhaustive trip through the church's architecture, the icons and other adornment within, and the rituals carried out. The eleventh chapter "God's Kingdom on Earth" shows what Orthodox mean when we call our faith *the* Church, and differences between the Orthodox tradition and those of Roman Catholics and Protestants, as well as how ecumenism proceeds from an Orthodox understanding. The twelfth chapter "Saints" is a listing of heroes of the Church throughout history, and the final chapter "Time In the Kingdom" the calendar of the Church and its great feasts and seasons are presented. The book has two appendices, the first gives the readings for each day of the Church year, and the second is a jumble of various matters not treated in the main material such as forms of address for clergy.The book is informative. Matters not treated in many introductory Orthodox materials find a place here, such as the Paschal miracle of the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, and the dozens of little adornments that make a building an Orthodox church. Much of the information is accompanied by relevant quotations from the Church fathers. Yet, the work as a whole has deep problems. A lot of the samples are overly simplistic and lack rigour. For example, in the section "Countering the claims of Fundamentalists", the fallacy behind sola scripture is not presented, which is the standard complaint against Fundamentalism by RC and Orthodox apologists. Editing is idiosyncratic. For some reason the discussion on tithing is within the chapter on fasting, and chapters six and ten might have been compressed into one. The book is also typeset unprofessionally, apparently in a common word processes. In a pretty large part of the book apostophes are missing entirely, and elsewhere there are grammatical errors, various typefaces are mixed with abandoned, and there are extra spaces everywhere. I understand that Orthodox publishing companies have limited resources, but even some simple proofreading would have helped.I could see this book as being especially useful for catechumen classes, but it desperately needs a second edition with corrections and improvements.

This book captured my attention from the first sentence. I simply adored Beatrice, the duke, and all the characters, really. It was just a pleasure to read. Ms. Messina did an outstanding job of keeping my interest equally engaged by the mystery as by the developing relationship between Beatrice and Kesgrave. I appreciated very much her wit and sense of humor as reflected by her intelligent and imaginative characters in both thought and dialogue.

This young (well, by Regency standards she is on the shelf and no longer a marriage prospect) woman is both charming and a bit of a busybody. All female sleuths of the early 18th century would be viewed this way -- since it is so indelicate to investigate murder. Beatrice is not penniless, which I liked -- she lives on the goodwill of close family members and has a decent wardrobe. I liked also her self-confidence and perseverance. What I did not like was her intense dislike of Duke Kesgrave (who gladly serves as a co-investigator) simply because he's a withdrawn and discreet member of the aristocracy. She mused WAY too often about how pleasurable it would be to throw food items at him. This got old. Even given her comparatively humble position in life, I thought it would be more believable had she warmed up to him a little more. Will gladly go on to the next book.

Absolutely fell in love with this story. The first couple pages were a little wordy but once I got the start of the mystery, I found myself laughing, smiling, and everything else, right along with the characters. Sure, some of it was a little far-fetched, with the behavior between Bea and the Duke, but it was still plausible, at least within the setting the author created. Loved it so much, I went on to devour the next two books and I can't wait for the fourth in the series.

I loved this book and look forward to reading the entire series. Lynn Messina writes as though she were born and bred in the British Regency era, even though I surmise that she’s an American. It was all so authentic , but like one of the reviewers stated, there was too much of the food throwing angst with Beatrice. One time of temptation to throw food at the duke would have been enough. I love how the relationship with the duke developed. I just wish Bea had not always felt she had to verbally spar with the duke constantly. That got a little tiresome. Matching wits with him was fine, but I felt like Bea was always trying to prove herself— too much. But these mysteries are so well written that I can overlook those parts. Keep up the great writing Lynn Messina😊

I had a hard time getting into the story. For the first third to half of the Book, I was indifferent, and could have easily stopped reading. I’m glad I didn’t. During the second half of the book, I found myself caring about the characters and really enjoying the book. I became attached to the characters and wanted to continue their stories, so I read books two and three of the series. They didn’t disappoint, and I’d love to read more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I won't give away the plot--it wouldn't be fair to do so. However, I can say that the characters are fun and the dialogue, both internal and between the characters, is well done. I noticed only a few errors, typos, not doubt.I like the book enough to read the next in the series, immediately, actually. Apparently, the author is quite well known, just not to me.

Love love these three books.......the dialog is absolutely delicious. And Beatrice becoming more and more sure of herself is a cause to rejoice. There are so many great moments in the stories, please read them yourself. And I hope this isn’t the end of the stories. Please say it isn’t.

I envy the author's ability to write witty dialogue. I could never speak so well, let alone write dialogue as well as the author does. The dialogue and plotline kept me entertained. Glad to have read this book.

Great reference book, with immediately-useful content. Coding examples make the information crystal clear.

I needed to use LWP to interact with various web APIs; 'Perl & LWP' turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. Although it's dated, the book contains a wealth of information about the module and working with HTTP in Perl.It is worth noting that in 2007, the book's author, Sean Burke, published the text of the book on his personal website at [...]. If you're thinking of purchasing the Kindle edition of this book (like I ended up doing), you may be better off using his site. Clearly, if you want a physical copy of the book Amazon is still a great way to go.

As a web programmer, I had dealt with several such projects dealing with web automation and writing simple crawlers even before I read "Perl & LWP". The book was the first book I've read on the subject, and I'm by no means disappointed. The book is very well organized, very informative and nails the subject in the head. I am pleased.I noticed some inaccuracies in the discussions, some chopped off paragraphs and sentences. But this doesn't affect the usability of the book much. Author Sean Burke does a great job in walking one through the most of the aspects of web automation and data extraction in the web using Perl and LWP (libwww in Perl ).The codes the book gives are very well organized, well written and easily debugable. The steps are pretty consistent across all the examples: a) Inspect the HTML source code of the page; b) Determine the tokens and patterns of interest; c) Write the first code; d) Fine tune the code;As usual, I'll be commenting on individual chapters to give you an idea of thecoverage of the book in more details...

I bought this book to get information automatically on japanese stocks(for example, charts, price, volume, PER, PBR, ROE, ROA, News, messages on Yahoo! Japan BBS for stocks) from the WEB every day.Somehow this book has not yet translated into Japanese language.I think this book would sell very well if translated into Japanese. Many demands.This book is self-contained about the WEB, so you need little Perl programming rules and don't have to have knowledge on the Internet Protocols(HTTP) at all.In most cases, all you need to do is to modify an example program on this book for your use very little.
