I love Sara Donati's writing. I love the Paradise setting and the cast of characters. I can't say positively that I loved Lake in the Clouds, though. I loved parts of it, and I found myself skipping other parts.I felt that the book was inaccurately named -- it should have been called "Hannah's Story" rather than "Lake in the Clouds". This book (when not distracted by a storyline about runaway slaves) deals almost entirely with Hannah Bonner's coming of age, and her choices -- is she white, or is she Kahnyenkehaka (that's Mohawk to those not in the know).I was pleased by LitC after reading Dawn on a Distant Shore. Donati returned to the setting that made her story, and it shines like a jewel in the pages of LitC. We return to all the foibles and passions of a little town named Paradise set in the wilderness, and the supporting cast are the characters that truly shine in this book.Overall it starts out a bit slower than I anticipated, but by the end I was unable to put it down. Well done, Sara!

Part three of the Into the Wilderness saga catches the Bonners as their oldest daughter Hannah comes into her own as an independent young woman and talented healer. It is a difficult time on the mountain and off. Slavery and all it's ugliness is at issue. I was not aware that the northern states allowed slaves, so this point was particularly jarring to me. It prompted me to research a bit and indeed slavery was allowed in the northern states, New York in particular. The Bonner's with their strong moral code of freedom for all are caught up in the mess. All the while Hannah, struggles with her heart and her own moral compass as she travels away from the mountain for the first time to expand her medical knowledge.I found this to be a satisfying read. I'm invested in the characters and their never a dull moment lives. The author knows how to spin her web.

I loved the first in this series and liked the second very much. But this one distinguishes itself by its two main plots: that of Hannah Bonner's coming of age, and the tracking of slaves in upstate NY as they seek freedom in Canada. Both plot lines were compelling and heart-wrenching. Hannah's medical expertise develops as she trains in NYC, and she meets a potential life mate, a native of a different tribe. Several of Paradise's more unsavory characters get their comeuppance in this book, which in itself is very satisfying. This is my favorite of the books in this series, so far.

I totally love this series. I had my doubts about how much I would like Book 3 because the focus changed from Nathaniel and Elizabeth to Hannah, Nathaniel's daughter with his deceased wife. What can I say other than thus far, Sara Donati has never failed to deliver a great story. As with any story dealing with the mixing of cultures, there are predjudices, injustices and such, but what is great about Sara Donati is the way she deals with these issues. She details the unfairness and horror, yet doesn't paint the oppressed as hopeless, helpless victims in spite of the fact they may not emerge with the best possible outcome.

You take a dozen different readers and you're gonna get a dozen different opinions on the same story. For me, this third book in the Wilderness Saga was quite good. A continuing epic that was basically Hannah's story, but still brought us our beloved Elizabeth, Nathaniel and a bit of the wise wit of legendary Hawkeye. As families grow, branch out in different interests and move on in their lives, so does Hannah and the Bonners. Hannah's interest in medicine has developed and she takes instruction, temporarily, in Albany under prestigious Drs. She (as well as Elizabeth and Nathaniel) are indirectly and unintentionally involved in running slaves to their freedom and thwarting the slave trade in general. There are bounty hunters and black riots. And Hannah meets a few famous people including the sitting Presidents' Secretary. Quite a coup for a half breed female of this era. This story gives us a little bit of NY Smallpox vaccination history as well as a scarlet fever epidemic and Hannah's involvement in those areas. And Hannah continues to generate respect from just about everyone she meets.Personally I loved this story and I thought it was well played. It held me captive with all the drama of slaves running for freedom and all the ugliness involved in slave trade. I love Hannah's character...I love her strength and wisdom. She's complex, serious and all things good.I continue to feel sorrow for Dr. Richard Todd..and I only hope we hear that he finds happiness in book four.

Awakening Together: The Spiritual Practice of Inclusivity and Community, by Larry Yang

Review

“I don’t see how Awakening Together could be better. It is so wise, thoughtful, dedicated to our healthful growth, ease, and enlightenment through the Dharma that I know I will be reading it for years to come. Larry Yang seems to have thought of everything we will need as we venture bravely forward—through racism, prejudice, and ignorance—into the free spiritual beings we were meant to be. Together.” (Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple)“Larry Yang’s voice, heart, and insight in Awakening Together can be both trusted and radically illuminating.  We do indeed need each other for any of us to awaken to our true nature as human beings. Mindfulness practice has to be about inclusivity and diversity and justice if it is to be kind and compassionate and wise.  If we truly “inter-are” as Thich Nhat Hanh asserts, then, as this book shows, we have to widen our scope of what is worthy of our attention. Parts of this book may make some people in the greater mindfulness community uncomfortable. It certainly was true in my case. That is precisely why it is particularly valuable to read and reflect upon and learn from. We need trusted others to show us our blind spots, our tacit assumptions, and our ignorance. I highly recommend this elegant, highly personal, and hopefully profoundly influential book.” (Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living)“What a gift Awakening Together (a timely and essential offering) gives, to learn how, through the lessons of past experience and the lens of future needs, we can build sanghas that represent the illuminating and joyous presence that true diversity brings.”  (Gina Sharpe, Co-Founder, New York Insight Meditation Center)“Awakening Together combines the intimately personal, the Buddhist and universal into a loving, courageous, important work that will benefit all who read it. For anyone who longs to collaborate and create a just and inclusive community, Larry provides a brilliant guidebook.” (Jack Kornfield, author of A Path With Heart)“Awakening Together is essential reading as we seek to heal our own hearts, our communities and our world.” (Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge)“Awakening Together is filled with love. Larry Yang plants your feet, offers his hand, and without hesitation opens our eyes. His teachings on creating and sustaining communities that welcome the full range of our life experiences, are clear and poignant. He skillfully walks us into a vision of an inclusive spiritual home in which we can unfold and reveal our true selves. As a seasoned, and well-loved dharma teacher, his long-awaited gift satisfies the soul that yearns to be seen. Deep bows, beloved friend, for this offering.” (Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, author of The Way of Tenderness)“In Awakening Together, Larry Yang shares an in-depth personal journey and his professional experience of wise and actionable guidance for building inclusive Buddhist communities. A must read for anyone interested in understanding the integrities of belonging.” (Ruth King, dharma teacher, life coach, and author of Healing and Mindful of Race) “This book is essential reading for anyone interested in building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, empowered, wise and compassionate community.” (Kittisaro and Thanissara, authors of Listening to the Heart)“This book is a real treasure, and a map to great awakenings in our worldwide sangha.” (Myokei Caine Barrett, Shonin, resident priest of Myoken Temple in Houston)“For the first time—a Dharma book that is a roadmap showing collective pathways out of social suffering. In a voice both passionate and wise, Larry Yang guides us to co-create spiritual communities that embrace the pain of oppression and inequity as integral to the ground of compassion and liberatory spiritual practice.” (Mushim Patricia Ikeda, Buddhist teacher, author, and activist)

A wonderful book that should be read and treasured by anyone interested in collective transformation and dharma teachings. If you read one dharma book this year, this should be the one. The lessons are deep and life changing. The book is beautifully written and organised, with reflective questions at the end of each chapter. The questions allow and encourage the reader to move through and reflect on our own journeys and efforts to create conscious community and encourages us to awaken together to the possibilities of increased connection.Larry Yang leads us step by step through how to work with the deep pains of institutional racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny and classism not simply as individuals, but as a collective. He not only covers the “how tos”, but also provides the details of our collective history of the efforts that have been made to create a more inclusive and beloved community of dharma practitioners, so that together we have a greater understanding of our own histories as a community. This book will help our dharma communities in North America move forward on our path of understanding and growing the relational and collective nature of Buddhist teachings. We all need to encourage our fellow practitioners to read this book, reflect and engage fully in awakening together.

An important book but it does not provide sufficient background or supporting information in sociology, politics, history, or black studies to fully stand up to the reactionary views prevalent in western cultures, particularly America. Of course, to comprehensively provide that information would be a work beyond perhaps what most authors are capable of, but nonetheless without it there is an assumption that readers fully understand the implied political, social and historical context Larry Wang is using to make his point. My personal opinion is that no assumptions should be made and that to do so reflects academic life within a bubble. For the reader who has a sound understanding of race relations in America founded on a solid educational background of history, politics, sociology, and science, this book will make complete sense and Wang's approaches and solutions seem reasonable and fair. For those readers who do not have this kind of background, Wang's approach will seem over politicized. This is the difficulty of writing such a book. The ones who need to won't like it. Nonetheless, I applaud Mr. Wang writing it. Content/politics aside, I found this book an pleasant read, very heartfelt and honest, and would highly recommend it as a guide for those who are already enlightened to the issues he raises and wish to build a healthy diverse community amongst other like minded individuals.

Its hard to find the right words to express how moved and inspired I am by Awakening Together. Through a very intimate telling of his own path of awakening through the dharma Larry invites and challenges us to wake up both individually and collectively. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to live and lead in a meaningful way and help create a world where others can do so as well. - Bill Pullen, MCC, Program Director, Executive Certificate in Leadership Coaching - Institute for Transformational Leadership, Georgetown University.

An inspiring book. Larry holds these sharp questions with such compassion. This is a book, not just for being woke but for true awakening. Everybody should be invited read this book with an open heart, especially people like me; white heteronormative and economically privileged. This is a path through the limiting narrative of “identity politics” to a place where we understand we don’t like in a one or even a two dimensional universe. The breathtaking and staggering beauty of the dharma is that we are invited to embrace paradox - our individual identities as well as our collective experience. When we do that we open to a rich and fulfilling way of being together; awakening together.

Well written and well stated on issues on diversity in the Buddhist sangha.

This is a beautiful, heartfelt book. Larry Yang has a way of gently exposing blind spots and challenging topics, while inviting you in and making you look forward to reading more. He is a wonderful story-teller and uses his own experiences to bring home the point that inclusivity is essential to allowing our meditation/spiritual communities to truly flourish, even when we have a long way to go to fully realize it. He gives practical examples of inclusivity in action - even when the process is messy, it's inspiring to read about people coming together with such deep intention to wake up and listen.

Have not finished it but have read enough to really appreciate this book.

So helpful in this time of such divisiveness

Retribution is C J Petet's finest novel yet. It's an exciting story that examines the life of a young boy who has been abused in the worst possible ways yet is redeemed by a loving family. The plot is superb and so very unique compared to other writers. Unlike some of Mr. Petet's other novels, this one well proof read. His knowledge of firearms has always been superb and I certainly am drawn to that. The romance in this novel is very tastefully expressed. I'm sorry I'm done with this novel and wish it could go on forever. This is the authors Magnum Opus. You will not be disappointed. I've read every one of C J Petet's novels and hope that he continues to write them.

For 2 years i have followed Mr. Petit faithfully, always impatient for his next release. It really became an addiction, I enjoyed his books more than others without exception. Retribution is the culmination of his books ( at least to date ) with both the storyline, characters and ending. As he has done many times before he develops characters to fit plot and Joe & Cassie are a perfect fit. Western violence remains as in other books, but it is downplayed to the point of almost being subtle. As a first read of the author it is great, but if you have followed as I have, it has a much greater impact. Let’s all hope he does indeed return.

CJP. has. penned a western a bout a young boy whose Mother and Sister that been kidnapped. The ladies die. Later the boy is suppose to distract a possee. He goes to reform school. He becomes a Deputy then a Bounty Hunter searching for the gang. He is injured and becomes an avenging man, who is bound and determined to capture or kill the last brother. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Joe Hogan was raised by the six Hogan Brothers. He idolized them even if they were Not always kind to him. He thinks they are really his brothers and tries to participate in a bank robbery. The brothers abandon him when the robbery does not go as planned. Joe and Drew, one of the six brothers, get captured. Drew, tells him the truth about His mother and that they are not related. The brothers kidnapped his mother and his aunt and used them for sex and as slaves.

This is number 50 for Mr. Petit, and I have never noticed ghost writer support and yet have received another interesting and compelling story line. Bold characters, well developed that the reader can adopt. I hope he enjoys his time away and comes back to us with more great stories. Really enjoy his books!

Complex plot and characters, is a hall mark of this author. Plus, he delves into their inner most feelings. I have read ALL of his 50 novels, and it just gets better and better. Enjoy your few months off, and looking forward to MORE come Spring, 2019.

This is my first book by this author, and unfortunately it would most probably be the last. I bought it because it had great reviews, but I can’t really see what people liked so much about it. The writing is awful, the story doesn’t flow, and it’s full of unnecessary prose. It seems to have been written by a child: short sentences, repetitive, immature. This book is in serious need of editing. Don’t buy it.

I dont know how you do it but this one is the best of the best The characters are full and so likable the kind of family we all would love to be able to end up with you had enough gun battles and descriptions to keep me happy this time....Please keep them coming I will wait till spring and purchase the books I dont have in my collection and re read...Thanks again Mr Petit
