Review

“Witty, subtle, and surreal, these comics look like they were drawn by a time-traveling Victorian caricaturist with a strange mind and a keen eye for the oddities of modern life.” (Reza Farazmand, creator of Poorly Drawn Lines)“Deranged, beautiful, hilarious, and poignant, Jake Likes Onions is one of my absolute favorite comics.” (Matthew Inman, Eisner Award-winning creator of The Oatmeal and #1 New York Times bestselling author)"Jake's gags sting. And they have many layers. And they stay with you for quite a while. All very much like the eponymous vegetable." (Nicholas Gurewitch, The Perry Bible Fellowship)

The book of onions is highly recommended as an off beat, insightful and just twisted enough set of comic drawings to make you think. Jake Thompson is well known for his Instragram comics and these are among his best. I got the book for Christmas as something to lighten up the holidays and I only got a chance to read it once before it was picked up and hoarded by every member of the family. Pretty soon we were all using short hand to refer to particular comics.Highly Highly recommended, think of its kind of as a Millenial Verizon’s of Larson’s Far Side cartoons, only a little darker and more ironic. Be warned there are some “f-bombs” and rough language in some of the pages so keep it with the adults.Best humor book I have read in a while.

Jake's sense of humor is undeniably macabre most of the time, but also undeniably funny. One of the better web comics to come out this decade and well deserving of a print publication. The book itself features some of his best strips in a great looking little book. The print quality is excellent and presents his cross-hatch heavy drawing style beautifully. Not all of the jokes will land with everyone, but most of them will, and a few of them will have you crying laughing (as advertised on the cover)-Yanni Davros (Cartoonist / Author of Prolific Pen Comics)

SO happy to get this. "Jake Likes Onions" has been one of my favorite webpages for quite awhile and it's great to finally have these cartoons in book form. NO one can make me laugh like he does...his off-the-wall humor (and dead-on accuracy about many people/situationsn) are right up my alley. I haven't enjoyed comics like this since "The Far Side". But just know....this is way beyond Gary Larson. A+++

I like Jake's work but the book doesn't contain the best selection, most people who i know follow him on Instagram do not like half the jokes. I guess in the next book he should take help from outsiders to pick the jokes.Don't get me wrong, the book is a keeper just not the best of the lot.

I can't get enough of his work whether it's online or in book form, and this book is a great addition for the bathroom or to circulate among friends at work (in that order).Criticism: I didn't think the captures on the comics were necessary, as they're good enough on their own.

Good book but not an onion cookbook like I thought it would be. Oh well.

This book.told me absolutely nothing about onions! What a RIP off! Make America Eat Onions Again!(The comics are great. Pick up the book, if you can. Well worth it.)

Thompson's humor and sardonic wit shines brightly through his webcomic's viral Instagram feed and now this paper book made from dead trees. A great read for a rainy afternoon when everything seems hopeless and you need a reminder how accurate that feeling really is. BUY IT.

Moonbeams of Mahamudra (Tsadra), by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal

Review

“This remarkable text, Moonbeams of Mahāmudrā, contains the essence of the entire Buddhist tradition as it has come to us from India and Tibet. The author, Dakpo Tashi Namgyal, clearly lays out the profound path of Mahāmudrā with both the analytical style of a scholar and the experiential style of a meditator. This unique approach is, at the same time, profound, practical, and completely accessible. It is my sincere wish that this new translation will inspire and benefit all who encounter it.”—Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche“Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s Moonbeams of Mahāmudrā is a fine piece of traditional scholarship that is, at the same time, a clear manual for beginners as well as advanced Mahāmudrā meditation practitioners. With her extensive introduction and new annotated translation of Moonbeams, Elizabeth M. Callahan renders an enormous service for scholars and practitioners alike. The introduction does not only cover a comprehensive history of the relevant transmission lineages, but also discusses in an academically balanced and well-documented way the major issues of current research, such as the controversy around the attempts to justify sūtra-based Mahāmudrā. The new translation of Moonbeams profits from Callahan’s exemplary mastery of classical Tibetan philology as well as her long-standing experience of Mahāmudrā meditation. This rare combination of skills shines throughout the highly readable text, making Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s Mahāmudrā classic for the first time easily accessible.”—Klaus-Dieter Mathes, Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Vienna“Mahāmudrā, the “great seal” of empty and blissful awareness, was a crucial concept and meditative practice in late Indian Buddhism and lies at the very heart of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. No Kagyu text on the great seal is more important that Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s Moonbeams of Mahāmudrā, and with Elizabeth Callahan’s superb new translation, this masterwork receives the full scholarly treatment it deserves. Her fresh translation of the shorter but equally influential Mahāmudrā: Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance, by the Ninth Karmapa, only adds to the richness of this spiritual and intellectual feast—which will be savored by any scholar or practitioner seeking a lucid explanation of some of the deepest explorations the nature of mind and reality ever undertaken.”—Roger Jackson, Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies and Religion, Carleton College "Moonbeams of Mahāmudrā is not only a meditation instruction manual but a lucid explanation of Ground, Path, and Result Mahāmudrā in the context of the Buddhist path. Dakpo Tashi Namgyal taught it so well that he came to be known as the reincarnation of Gampopa. Elizabeth Callahan spent her entire life studying and translating Mahāmudrā texts. There is no doubt that anybody who wishes to study Mahāmudrā will need to read this book."—Ringu Tulku

This work presents delightful and masterful new translations of two of the most important sacred Tibetan texts on mahāmudrā, carried out over many years by Elizabeth M. Callahan, one of the leading and most accomplished translators of teachings from this tradition. In introducing the first book, "Moonbeams" (Dakpo Tashi Namgyal, 1512-1587), she writes "primarily it is a text for meditators: its instructions are to be internalized through practice. And so it is hoped that this new translation will allow the brilliance of Moonbeams to reach English readers."Indeed, it seems to do precisely that. With exquisite and yet straightforward translations, well-researched and grounded in refreshing simplicity, the fruits of her extensive years of study, practice and training are revealed. In reading the text, one can almost hear the voice of Dakpo Tashi Namgyal shine through, whose own goal was that "the presentation ... be done in a way that is easy to comprehend." Given the profound nature of these teachings and their practices, it is remarkable to see this so successfully carried out by both the author and the translator. The second text, "Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance" (Wangchuk Dorje, 1556-1603) is also a most splendid new translation and a great guide and support for those ready to cultivate a more systematic mahāmudrā study and practice. Along with "Moonbeans," it was among the very first Dharma texts selected by leading lineage lamas to be translated from Tibetan, for preservation purposes, after many of its teachers found themselves in exile in India and other lands. In our group, Mahāmudrā Meditation Center, these two meditation manuals have served as the core to its study and practice program, and kept our interest for almost thirty years now, thanks to our spiritual director, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche (author of Second Foreword.) Rinpoche noted early on that either of these two texts can be relied upon by mahāmudrā students as "as a full system of instruction that they can implement on their own gradually through diligent application."We are delighted to have these new translations available to support our own study and practice efforts and, additionally, that they are now available (and preserved) as ebooks for anyone who is interested in mahāmudrā meditation -- sometimes loosely described as getting to know, and living in accordance with, mind "as-it-is."

Among hundreds of good books on Mahamudra, three are considered the most important for earnest practitioners of the Kagyu Lineage. These are ‘The Ocean of Definitive Meaning’ and ‘Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance’ by the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje (1556–1603) and ‘Moonbeams of Mahamudra’ by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (1511-1587). Elizabeth Callahan translated the first of these texts brilliantly in 2001, and with this present volume she has given us the other two.Translated under the auspices of the Seventeenth Karmapa, Khenchen Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, and Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, these three texts provide us a complete view of mind and a comprehensive practice regimen for achieving Mahamudra. As a practitioner of Mahamudra, this is a big deal for me—one of the happiest of my life—and I can’t thank Elizabeth enough for all the years she has put into this work.We live in an age when we are rediscovering the Mahamudra of Saraha and Maitripa and Gampopa and on and on, and it gives me shivers to think about those siddhas practicing this same Mahamudra in their forest huts and their frigid mountain caves. Could they have foreseen that their insights would still be relevant in this high-tech 21st century? I wonder! But I fear time is running out for us. The Earth’s ecology teeters on the brink of collapse, and our leaders live in denial. If only there were more of us practicing Mahamudra perhaps the planet would not be dying from superstition, ideology, materialism, and war. If you are interested in a different world, a world of compassion and enlightenment, here is the path.
