The author did extensive research and presented historically accurate facts. Nothing in the book is a fabrication. The book is compelling for its raw honesty. I applaud the author for presenting both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian story. The book portrays the lives of two strong women who did their best to make the world a better place using the limited means they had. Their friendship is based on love and respect for one another. Their moving message is that peace is possible. I urge readers to form their own opinion.

Although this is a fascinating relationship intertwined with the history of the Palestinian/Israeli endless warring, I found it hard to follow..Many characters and flashbacks of their lives.. educational but hard to follow at times..

A good book about the amazing lives and friendships of Ruth Dayan and Raymonda Tawil. This book is full of lots of names and dates, many of which will be familiar to those who know anything about the history of the conflict in the Holy Land. Raymonda and Ruth's connection with these people, many of whom were major players in the politics of the region, provide a unique and interesting perspective. Ruth shows us that Moshe Dayan was not the horrible warmonger that many Palestinians to this day think he was. And Raymonda shows us that Yasser Arafat was a complex and very human person, not the monster that Israeli politicians consistently portrayed him as. I was struck by how both Ruth and Raymonda considered themselves to have been born in the same country and not until near Oslo did they ever consider a two-state solution. Both women consistently fought for a single-state solution where the values and ideals that the Israeli democracy stood for would be extended to all peoples west of the Jordan River. The book alludes to a period of lost opportunity after the 1967 war. Had Israel truly annexed the west bank after 1967 and offered citizenship and rights to all Palestinians in the territories, peace likely could have been found and there would never have been the uprisings and conflict that we still see. Palestinians would have loved to have democracy and freedom as the Israelis had. They were ready for it at that time. Instead Israel has systematically eliminated any and all moderate peace partners they might have had. This book tries very hard to portray the events as the two women experienced them in their individual lives. So we do see both sides of the conflict to a large degree. Both women had many friends on the opposite side, and both were well respected by Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Despite this, it's hard to hide the fact that Israeli government actors, particularly the likes of Ariel Sharon, have acted extremely badly towards Palestinians over the years. And the book doesn't hide some of Raymonda's horrible experiences at the hands of brutal Israeli military governors and how she was interrogated for 45 straight days in one of Israel's most notorious prisons. The book also doesn't gloss over the fact that many elements within Arafat's circle were violent and there were bus bombings and many civilians died before Arafat renounced terrorism and sought peace. We see, though, that Israel wasn't that interested in peace with Arafat, using Oslo as a means of pushing him into a very small corner (virtually a prisoner in his compound in Ramallah) until he died under what many Palestinians consider mysterious circumstances. At the end of the book, the author makes a comment that the Israeli government seems to fear peaceful resistance and humanization of Palestinians more than outright terrorism. They never quite knew what to do with Raymonda, who they viewed as a trouble maker. Raymonda ultimately was exiled from the land she loved, partly by choice, but under clear pressure from Israel and extreme factions within the PLO. Very sad, but her mission to promote peace continues through people reading this book.Well worth a read, and if you don't know all the names and dates, don't worry, you'll still get the picture that Ruth and Raymonda wish to present through Anthony David's writing. For some this book may be best listened to rather than read.

Marvelous book! Filled with unique insights concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It's important to read multiple books in order to form your own opinions regarding this complicated, highly complex, heated topic . Other books I recommend: Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue, and Unthinkable Choices by Mosab Hassan Yousef with Ron Brackin; Once an Arafat Man: The True Story of How a PLO Sniper Found a New Life by Tass Saada and Dean Merrill; Zvi: The Miraculous Story of Triumph Over the Holocaust by Elwood McQuaid; Holy War for the Promised Land: Israel at the Crossroads by David Dolan; From Time Immemorial: The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict over Palestine by Joan Peters

I have recommended this book to all my friends. The story of the two women, both fighting for peace while standing at odds with their own families, is is a story of immense courage to fight for peace between Arabs and Israelis so the future of their people would not continue to be death in the throes of war. The writer has achieved compassionately relaying the merits of each cultures belief of the.right of settlement on the same single territory. Readers will find it difficult to say goodnight to Ruth and Raymond's and their improbable friendship.

Two remarkable women from completely opposite backgrounds reveal the very real possibility of not just peace, but close personal relationships, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In spite of belonging to families with very strong military ties in the Mideast, they established and maintained a very strong friendship in spite of political and even family opposition for forty years. Both women worked for peace on both sides of the border, in spite of house arrests, threats to their lives, and the shelling of their homes and neighborhoods. This book is so encouraging when it comes to world peace. It is a demonstration of what can really happen when people choose to engage in friendship, rather than waging war on innocent people who suffer the consequences of warmongers.

This book is about Moishe Dayan’s wife Ruth Dayan and Yassar Arafat’s mother in law Raymonda Tawil.Feminists will love reading about these bright, articulate, determined and caring women who tried to bring peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. The downside of the book comes from the man Raymonda chose to write the book. He was so pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel that the historical context paints the Israelis as always the bad guys and the Palestinians as the suffering good guys.

A wonderful look into the emotional bonds between two women who both loved their country. We see the way to peace and the roadblocks to peace at the same time. One comes away with respect for both Israelis and Palestinians. And one feels the hopelessness of a peaceful solution ever being worked out. We can only pray that a young Ruth and Raymonda come forward to carry on the struggle for harmony between two peoples more alike than different.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: Bill Walton Reviews When the Game Was Ours Bill Walton played in the NBA for 13 years, and in 1996, was named one of the top 50 players in NBA history. He's been an analyst for CBS Sports and NBC Sports, and since 2002, he's been a game analyst for ESPN NBA telecasts. Read his guest review of When the Game Was Ours: Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are transcendent, iconic and timeless standard bearers of excellence who changed "The Game" forever, always bringing out the best in each other and never failing to put a smile on all our faces. I was one of the lucky ones. I had the incredible good fortune to have witnessed firsthand the Bird/Magic rivalry. It was an intense and constant thing for us all. But even I didn't realize how powerful their connection was until I read When the Game Was Ours, a riveting and page-turning masterpiece that could only be written with the help of someone like Jackie MacMullan, who was there every step of the way and who sensed there was a whole lot more to their story than what happened on the court or got played over and over again on the highlight reels. In this book, Larry and Magic tell stories like they never have before. I was enthralled, page after page. Theirs was a unique relationship. They were polar opposites, but in ways few of us realized they were very much the same. They both wanted the same thing, day in and day out--to win. And did they know how to win. When the Game Was Ours perfectly captures the defining moments of their lives from the very beginning of their fiercest of rivalries through their constantly evolving historical relationship and friendship right up to the present. This epic tome is the capstone of their landmark careers. It is also so much more than anyone could ever dream for. When the Game Was Ours brilliantly explains why "The Game" will always belong to Larry and Magic.--Bill Walton (Photo © Joe Faraoni/ESPN) Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson Amazon.com: It was interesting to learn that a fast break during an exhibition game sparked the start of your long friendship. Talk about that play and how it set the stage for future Bird vs. Magic battles. Larry Bird: What I remember about that play was we had the defender spinning around like a top because we moved the ball so quickly. I had never played with anyone who could pass the ball like Magic. I was blown away by the things he was doing on the court. But once we were done as teammates on that All-Star team, I moved on. And, a year later, when we played against each other for the NCAA championship, I treated him like he was just another guy. I wasn't too big on being friendly with people I was trying to beat. I think that upset him, but I didn't care. I was always taught, "Don't talk to the enemy." Earvin "Magic" Johnson: I already knew about Larry before we played in the World Invitational Tournament. I was dying to meet this guy who went to Indiana, quit school, worked on a garbage truck, then came back and started putting up really big numbers for Indiana State. We played on the second team together during those exhibitions, and the way we moved the ball, we were better than the starters! That one play was so fast, so amazing, those Russian players had no idea what hit them. We didn't spend a whole lot of time together off the court, because Larry kept to himself, but I was real excited the following spring when I realized our Michigan State team was going to play his Indiana State team for the NCAA championship. I went over to say hello to him at the press conference a day or two before the game, and he totally blew me off. I couldn't believe it. I left thinking, "That Larry Bird, he's kind of a jerk." And the rivalry was on. Amazon.com: Where did you each develop your love for the game? Bird: My two older brothers, Mike and Mark, played basketball all day long. They were bigger and stronger than me, so they were better in the beginning. But I loved the way it felt when the ball dropped through the strings, so I was out there all the time, day and night, working on my game. I wasn't going to stop until I could beat my brothers. And by the time that happened, I was hooked on the game. I couldn't live without it. Johnson: I honestly can't remember a time when basketball wasn't a part of my life. I grew up in a big family, so we played all kinds of sports, including basketball. I loved the way the ball felt in my hands. I took my ball with me everywhere--to school, to the store, to the school dances. People in Lansing, Michigan, got used to seeing me walking down the street dribbling my ball. I wasn't going to stop until I was in the NBA. Amazon.com: If you could each replay one game from the past, which would it be and why? Bird: I'd like to go back to the 1987 Finals, to the game when Magic sunk his junior junior hook. It was down to the final seconds, and Magic had Kevin McHale isolated out on the wing, and when he drove past him to the basket, our center, Robert Parish, came over to help, and I came over from the weak side, but probably a second too late. I never expected Magic to shoot a hook. I had never seen him do anything like that before. People forget that even after that basket, we still had a chance to pull it out. I got a great look from the baseline in the final seconds, but the shot rolled off. If I could go back and replay that game, maybe we would have won it, and possibly the series as well. Johnson: That's easy. I'd go back to Game 2 of the 1984 Finals, when we were in Boston and about to take a 2–0 lead in the series, and instead I called a time-out in the final seconds. If I hadn't called it, we would have run out the clock and taken total command of the series. Instead, because of the time-out, the Celtics were able to set their defense, and James Worthy's pass was intercepted by Gerald Henderson. That was one of the most disappointing losses of my career, and I've never forgotten it. Amazon.com: One of the most powerful moments in the book surrounds November 7, 1991--the day Magic announced he was HIV positive. Magic, why was it so important to you to contact Larry before the news hit? Johnson: You've got to understand that by this point, we're like Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. Nobody talked about one of us without mentioning the other. We were that connected. I knew the minute the news hit, people would be flocking to get a reaction from both Larry and Michael Jordan, so I felt I had to give them some warning. Also, by then, Larry and I had developed a bit of a relationship. In spite of all our battles, I felt a real affection for him. He needed to know, and he needed to know from me. Amazon.com: Larry, what do you remember most about that day? Bird: The feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. It was a horrible, awful feeling. I just remember lying in my room, trying to take a nap, and all I could think about was that Magic would be dead soon. At that time, we didn't know much about HIV. We all just assumed he had been given a death sentence, and that was really shocking to think about. Amazon.com: How did winning a gold medal with the 1992 Dream Team compare to winning an NBA championship? Johnson: That whole experience in Barcelona was amazing, fantastic. At that point, I was technically retired from the NBA because of my HIV illness, and I missed basketball so much. To be out there playing for my country, not to mention alongside Larry and Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, was one of the biggest thrills of my life. I savored every single moment of it. Bird: It was a little harder for me because my back was in such bad shape, and sometimes it was hard for me to enjoy it because of the pain. I just wanted to get into a game and make a contribution and be able to say I did it, that I was part of an Olympic team. And once I did that, I was happy. My goals were pretty realistic in Barcelona. Still, I didn't realize how amazing it would feel to be up on that medal stand, alongside Magic, John Stockton, Patrick, and all the guys, with that gold medal around my neck. That is one special memory. Amazon.com: Who carries the NBA torch today? Johnson: There's some great young talent out there, but I've got to choose the Laker, Kobe Bryant. I think he proved in the 2009 NBA championship that he learned how to balance his own individual skills with those of his teammates. That was a big step forward for him. What I liked best about Kobe was watching him enjoy himself. The game is supposed to be fun. Larry and I never lost sight of that. Bird: You certainly couldn't go wrong choosing Kobe, but I'm a LeBron James man. He is so strong. He's also fearless, and he's convinced he can do anything. That's what stands out to me. He still has some steps to take, like bringing the same effort defensively every night that he brings on the offensive end, but he has all the tools to accomplish that. He's going to have a long, successful career that will include some championships of his own. Amazon.com: If you both laced 'em up right now, who would win one-on-one in H-O-R-S-E? Bird: Nobody beats me in H-O-R-S-E. Besides, Magic can't shoot. Johnson: Larry, you'd have no chance against me one-on-one. I've got too many ways to beat you. Plus, as slow as I am, I'm still faster than you. “MAGICBIRD, BIRDMAGIC really should be the titled “When the Game was Mine” because that is how they went after each other on the court.  In When the Game Was Ours you will enjoy an exhilarating ride down one of the most competitive rivalries ever.” —Pat Riley"Finally—a book that tells the story of Magic and Larry from their vantage point. Jackie MacMullan has been a likable and well-respected sportswriter for many years, and considering her unique closeness to the NBA (and Boston sports in particular), I anticipated that this would be a definitive work on the often-celebrated Bird/Magic dynamic - a magnum opus if you will. Instead, I found it a fairly disorganized and pedestrian rehash of the same information that we already knew. I mean, it wasn't bad...it was very readable, but I can't think of anything that really distinguished it from the other basketball books I've read. At the end of the day, I don't think it's that the information or research was bad, it's really the lack of an elegant or entertaining writing style that limited this book. In contrast, Dan Shaughnessy's brand of cynical humor and storytelling is what made his first "Curse of the Bambino" such an entertaining read (as opposed to his follow-up "Reversing the Curse", in my opinion. The writing style is what makes the sports book - not the information. Perhaps that is why writing this type of book must be a great challenge for somebody like MacMullan - her likability is part of her identity (and brand), and that can be constraining when writing about people who engage you on that basis. Shaughnessy obviously does not operate within those constraints...

Plowed brought this book in a weekend. So many memories, passages to highlight, instances where I could remember exactly where I was. The book essentially covers 1979-2009. My life 1976-current day. So pretty fascinating to relive, and unique to me, the Pacers years w Bird the coach and executive. While the players rivalry in the 80s will highlight any Celtics or Laker fan experience, for this Pacer fan 1997-2005 were some of the best years of my life.Chapter 9 is incredibly moving covering Magic’s HIV announcement in 1991. As a 15 year old that didn’t like the Lakers, I really didn’t get the magnitude. The author captures this period vividly,in amazing detail, with remarkable behind the scenes accounts. Golly, I read that Chapter while walking on a treadmill at the gym, and had the damnedest time fighting back the tears.

Book definitely not an airball. Delivers and is not just an outsiders view. It's straight from the mouths of two of the greatest ever and the men who played against them. I don't know of any two other athletes that brought out the best in each other like Magic and Bird did. And it should be a blueprint on how the great ones should respect and treat each other: try to beat each other's brains out on the court, respect and emulate character off the court.

Really I had only modest expectations when I purchased this book as one of the Kindle daily deals. I've read many sports books on topics that are forced. Bird and Magic together? I really had no idea that they were so close. I learned through this book that their bond is legitimate and that made for a great book. The author was excellent and kept the story going. If you are like me and remember the NCAA championship battle between the two and the ensuing NBA finals meetings then I guarantee you will enjoy this book.

"When The Game Was Ours" provides an intimate look into the evolution of the relationship between Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The book does a great job telling the story of how two men became bitter rivals and eventually close friends. I was relatively young when both men began their careers and wasn't privy to the impact they had on the NBA as a whole, so I especially enjoyed learning about the history of the NBA and how these two men changed it forever. The book is a very easy read and manages to balance the historical aspect with additional insights into both Bird and Magic's relationships with their teammates as well. Unfortunately the latter gets a bit too gossip column for me, and detracts from the overall quality of the book. My only other complaint would be the amount of missing time the book has, for example, while the book does go into detail about Magic's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, it leaves out Larry's entirely. All in all I really enjoyed the book and recommend it for fans of either man, their teams, or the NBA in general.

I love basketball and love Bird and Magic specifically. This book does a great job of telling the story about the NBA as a whole but through the lens of two of the men that elevated the game to new heights. It's an excellent read for anyone that loves basketball.

Fun read. I would suggest this book to anyone that is a fan of the NBA and its history, a fan of either of the title superstars, or anyone that enjoys biogrpahies. The stories and careers are woven together seamlessly and are entertaining. The Boston author does a fair job of representing each athlete equally and there is no detectable "East Coast Bias"Fun book that explores the careers of each athlete and offers insights into how they helped grow the game and how their legends' grew along side one another- how they were rivals and friends at the same time.

Excellent book, good stories about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. I learned things about them both, that I simply didn't know. At the time this story was happening I lived in Indiana and was following Larry Bird at Indiana State. I loved the small school story, being from Indiana, it hit home. I was raised in a small town called Fortville, "Fortville Demons", this would be in the 50's, the population was about 2000, counting the cats & dogs. So, for me it was a great book, ending in the State Championship. Fun to read!

Review

“Almond is dead serious: Supporting a spectacle that causes brain damage is immoral."—New York Times Book Review“[Almond] is a very good writer, and his analysis of problems confronting the game today is well done."—Washington Post“Almond is a shifty cornerback of a writer: rangy, sarcastic, offbeat. And every once in a while, he’ll blindside you with a big hit."—New York Times “An unapologetic, frontal assault on the game's role in American culture."—Los Angeles Times “Steve Almond's blistering book Against Football: One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto is exactly what it advertises itself to be: an exasperated, frustrated, wide-ranging argument that the time has come to abandon football — particularly but not exclusively the NFL — as a sport built on violence, racism, economic exploitation of poor kids, corrupt dealmaking with local governments over stadiums, and a willingness to find it entertaining to watch people suffer brain damage."—Linda Holmes, NPR“A devastating multi-pronged attack."—Newsweek “Powerful... Almond is a sympathetic narrator, his evidence incontrovertible, the moral authority firmly on his side."—Harper's Magazine“A passionate and elegantly written book that finally overpowered any rationalization I could come up with to justify watching more football."—New York Times, Dealbook“A helpful and thoughtful read that traces the criticisms of the game and the men who run it."—Bitch Magazine“In Steve Almond’s Against Football, a book filled with 'obnoxious opinions' by the writer’s own admittance—and they’re not that bad—Almond makes a case for the fact that football, and the NFL specifically, is at the root of a toxic, pernicious, deadly and deadening culture in America. The book came out on August 26th, and it’s taken a mere two weeks for Almond to be proven right on a national scale, in the ugliest of fashions."—Flavorwire“Against Football is a book that kicks and prods and fights with itself and ourselves. Almond is asking himself and us to drop the ironic distance, open our eyes, and truly look at the dangerous, vile, beautiful, fun, highly corrupted, and horrifically corrupting corporate behemoth we spend so much of our money and leisure time enraptured by, and know what it is that we are doing, and what we are supporting."—The Millions“Steve Almond’s slim but muscular broadside slams into the wall of sanctimonious hokum served up by the NCAA, NFL, and their sycophantic sportswriter enablers."—PopMatters, Best Nonfiction Books of 2014“[Almond's] persuasive book dares fans to consider how long they can continue to ignore football’s obvious flaws in order to preserve their weekend ritual."—Barron's“Almond doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but sometimes it’s enough to raise the right questions at the right time. Against Football does that with disarming humor and humanity."—National Memo“What a perfect chance to take a breath, look around, and push the endeavor in a better direction."—Open Letters Monthly“This book is an important first step towards a more compassionate and educated discourse on what is, unfortunately, a game many of us are entertained by and deeply invested in."—AskMen.com, Recommended Reading for September“Against Football...makes a strong case that football, as presently practiced by the NFL and NCAA, should be reformed or abolished."—Oregonian“[Against Football] brilliantly states the case for radical change to save the sport."—Albany Times-Union“A book that’s part journalism, part memoir, part cultural harpooning."—Kansas City Star, FYI Book Club selection“Against Football is clearly the pick of the litter: funny, pained, profane and sharp as a November Saturday in Ann Arbor."—Tampa Bay Times“Almond covers all of the arguments against football...He has sworn off the game. Will anyone join him? As he notes, boxing was once this country’s top sport."—St. Louis Post-Dispatch“Pitch-perfect… Against Football is, at bottom, a love letter from a heartbroken fan, notable for his eloquence and clarity. It’s easy to imagine that this pungent critique, with quotable passages on nearly every page, could be a much-needed game-changer. If that’s overly optimistic, then we’ll have to settle for a first-rate piece of journalism and a great read."—Portland Press Herald“Almond's book is slim but potent... Almond makes his case in a style that is conversational, self-deprecating, sharp and often laugh-out-loud funny."—Plain Dealer“There are no easy answers found in Almond’s book—and it’s an intentionally provocative argument being made, obviously—but what it surely does is get you to think about what you’re doing on Sundays, what you’re paying to watch and how we could possibly let children play the game."—Las Vegas Weekly“It's an indictment, a self-excoriation, and a provocative analysis of why so many Americans are hooked on this organized violence."—Tampa Bay Times“Almond makes it impossible for us to ignore our willing participation in this corrupt and destructive pastime... Against Football is one fan’s inflammatory, yet indispensable, voice in the current conversation about the state of football in America."—Brooklyn Rail“Those who don't care for the U.S.'s favorite fall sport might be inclined to pick up Steve Almond's Against Football, looking for validation of their position. Those who love the sport may be drawn in by its subtitle, One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto, for similar reasons. Almond's power lies in his ability to speak to both readers."—Shelf Awareness, Great Reads Now in Paper“If you want to continue to enjoy watching football as you have in the past...you should particularly never read Steve Almond’s Against Football: One Fan’s Reluctant Manifesto.”—Utah Daily Herald“As a gesture of respect to a genuine 'critical eye', I am donating my copy of Almond’s remarkable book to the Cascade Public Library, so anyone can witness a moral person making a painful, moral decision."—Cascade Pioneer (Iowa)“As coiled and sharp as a scorpion’s tail... A top-notch interrogation."—Electric Literature“Almond (a New York Times bestselling author and lifelong Raiders fan) writes beautifully and thought-provokingly about his decision to give up watching a game he loves because of all the bad stuff that goes along with it."—Made Man“Almond’s book is a tremendous read, as all of his work is, but more than that, it’s an important one, and one that leaves you slightly queasy the next time you set your fantasy football roster."—Pop Culture BeastNonfiction November Picks, Entomology of a BookwormA Publishers Weekly Book of the Week“A welcome addition to the conversation."—Shelf Awareness“Many fans of football will react to this book with derision, and many non-fans will consider his points self-evident: both are wrong. These are arguments that deserve to be considered deeply and grappled with, and teens—who have not yet devoted their lives or opinions to or against the sport—are in a perfect position to take Almond’s  manifesto seriously."—School Library Journal“Those who don't care for the U.S.'s favorite fall sport might be inclined to pick up Steve Almond's Against Football, looking for validation of their position. Those who love the sport may be drawn in by its subtitle, One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto, for similar reasons. Almond's power lies in his ability to speak to both readers."—Shelf Awareness“A brilliantly quotable, carefully constructed, emotionally vulnerable tract sure to anger as many as it convinces, he argues against the sport’s many sins even as he thoughtfully examines its hold on the souls of the faithful."—Booklist, starred review“A provocative, thoughtful examination of an ’astonishingly brutal’ sport… Comic, compassionate and thought-provoking.”—Kirkus Reviews“Powerful… Almond is drawing on his own experiences as a fan to illustrate how difficult the problem, which provides the book with an engaging personal angle that will lure readers who are mature enough to hear him out whether they agree with his conclusions… An important read, even if as Almond concedes, it offers more questions than answers.”—Publishers WeeklyPraise for Steve Almond’s Candy Freak:“This book will, yes, make you hungry, but it will also make you grateful-for wit, for self-effacing humor, for joyful obsessiveness, for the precise and loving use of language to crack open and celebrate our oddness-in short, for a writer as funny and big-hearted as Steve Almond.” —George Saunders“I got a real sugar rush and cluster headache reading this bittersweet book by Steve Almond-joy, the sugar daddy himself.” —Amy SedarisFrom the Hardcover edition.

Reading this book can serve as something of a litmus test. I've seen no critic — I use the term loosely — actually engage his arguments. Mostly they are flinging ad hominem non sequiturs. Those who react strongly against it — including the many who have flamed, insulted and aggressively mocked Almond in public forums — come off looking like reflections of the flawed culture he identifies. Critics react with unthinking passion, unleashing mouthsful of pejoratives, often questioning Almond's manhood or sexuality in bemusingly "male" term. For example, suggesting he possesses female genitalia reveals an essential misogyny; suggesting he must have a "big vagina" — seriously, it's a thing among his critics — is just stupid, a transparent and reflexive attempt to overlay deeply ingrained male insecurities and obsession with size.Make no mistake: Almond is a true fan of football, especially of — as we say in Broncos country — "the hated Raiders." But he's also a thoughtful man who sees the stark contradictions and dubious ethics of supporting our modern civic religion cum blood sport. He focuses a good deal of his manifesto — for it is that, rather than a deeper research project — on the problem of brain injuries, but he identifies other, very real issues: misogyny, hyper-machoism, militarism-jingoism, rich owners fleecing and blackmailing taxpayers, tribalism over what is really little more than (in his words), "brightly colored laundry," the obvious disconnect between a highly professionalized (though its players are unpaid!) professional football farm system being connected to institutions of higher learning, the incredible amount of time invested in passive observation, and more.As a life-long fan — my father took me to my first college game at age 6 and I still hold those season tickets and, try as I might, I've never successfully been able to avert my gaze from the game — I find Almond's manifesto persuasive and damning. Even before I read it I had resolved to, shall we say, reduce my "using" of football this season: I'm not going to every home game for my college team and will limit watching football on TV. I have always loved watching the game, but I intend to learn how else I might spend that time. This is four stars rather than five because I think Almond would have better served his purpose by investing more effort and turning it from manifesto into a more substantive, documented piece of research.

Ug. I feel like someone died. I feel terrible after reading this book. I would say do not read this if you want to keep liking football and still have a heart and soul.I can’t disagree with any of it. Football causes brain damage. Football is sanctioned violence, exploitation of athletes and on and on. “The struggle playing out in living rooms across the country is that of a civilian class that has created, for its own entertainment, a caste of warriors too big and strong and fast to play a child’s game without grievously injuring one another.” (Page 147)I bought this book in August of this year but waited until the Philadelphia Eagles started to really suck before I started reading it. My other teams (Redskins and Giants – I can explain) aren’t any better so it’s a good year for me to nobly read the truth about a game that I have put way too much importance on in my life. When I was 10, I had a small picture of Jesus on my bedroom wall, the kind with a swell glow in the dark cross. Nice. There were also about 20 large Washington Redskins posters. Sorry Jesus.I’m thankful the author acknowledges the good parts about football. At least the nostalgia. The fun as kids. The thrill of your team winning a big game, If they ever do. Electric football. Those plastic helmets in the gumball machine. My dad playing football. Nerf Football. The Redskins. Larry Brown. John Riggins. Doug Williams. Think they have brain damage? Yeah.Anyway I hope this book is a landmark book. Maybe it will be. But NFL Football is a tremendous cultural emotional momentum to turn around. What are we going to replace it with? Soccer? Hunting? It is also mind boggling that the NFL is a non taxible non profit corporation. Gee can I donate? Oh wait, I already have. Too much.I’m going to try to not watch football. And when someone says try they usually mean fail. Still I’m thankful for this book. Maybe I'll get a life. Maybe I'll get a big ol Jesus poster.

Steve, as no doubt revealed in these pages through wit and wisdom, reveals his VERY real struggle with the ongoing football concussion crisis. Question is: will anyone take this well-documented admonition seriously or will we cast this thorny issue aside or, worse, pretend that it doesn't exist at all?I, like Steve, am a lifelong devotee of this violent, brutal game that is American football. I can't promise a clean break because, like SO many, football has become one of our all-consuming addictions. Unless we live under stone, football's promotions are everywhere and stoke our excitement to watch and watch and.....More than this, heartwarming traditions surrounding viewership has infiltrated us. We HAVE to watch because what would we do while everyone is at Uncle Billy's house watching the "BIG" game. They are all "BIG" games, aren't they? The NFL Marketing machine would definitely want us to believe this. What Steve says here needs to be said for the better of the game. It would be VERY hard to imagine these United States without football but we can't, also, allow brutality on this level go unrecognized either.

#43,916 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a great, easy to read book on Managing Rental Properties. It has a good mix of both basic property management for those new to the business, as well as a few helpful hints for those that having been doing this for awhile. I knocked it down a star only because it is a bit basic, but this book would be perfect for those with just a few units or those just delving into the wonderful world of property management. For those with more experience, you could probably take it or leave it, though there are enough original ideas that it is worth the buy and the quick read.

We're beginner real estate investors and bought this book after we bought our first property. We used this book as well as several other forms that they gave out for free (when you buy the book) to help us cinch our first renter! Woohoo! Now my husband and I sort of look at it from time to time to check for any issues that may arise, or things that we should tick off when our renter first moves in.By paying for this book, we saved more money and learned a lot more than by finding a property manager for our house. For nearly $25 of investment as compared to $1,000+, I'll take that!

My wife and I were accidental landlords many years ago after a surprise job relocation and being stuck with a mortgage on a house in a tough sellers market. No horror stories, but we know we could have done a better job.Now we are intentionally getting into the business as we are getting within a decade of retirement age. We want to do it right and this book has been a great resource as we dive in.I've seen some critiques that say the content is a bit basic, but I don't agree with that at all. It is well-structured and well written. I honestly didn't read a single segment that I didn't feel was useful. I especially like the links to document templates and information about regs in specific states. The personal anecdotes about the writers' experiences also add a credible and sometimes humorous punch to information that one would expect to be boring.Bottom line, at around $17 for the paperback, I consider this book a gift to a rental newbie like me. I highly recommend.

While the book itself is fine, it's mostly common sense and the kindle format of the book is not worth the purchase price. The tables and charts in the Kindle version are difficult or impossible to read, and the "bonus book" which contains material referenced constantly throughout the book is not included for those who purchased it through Amazon (presumably to force you to purchase it on their website instead).

This is not like most real estate books. Many others read like a sales pitch: frustratingly repeating how great real estate is and how you'll get rich if you (insert general statement). This book is about action. It's a handbook. Do this. Here are the resources you need. Watch out for these common pitfalls. Here are the alternative solutions and why each might be best for different situations. Thank you!

I have read this book three times and my wife has read it once. This book provides many forms that are available on his online site and we have complied our rental program system based on this book and the knowledge it has given. I have read other books but this one has been the best for rental advice. I am new to being a landlord but am excited for this endeavor.

This book is like the encyclopedia for managing rental properties. There is so much to consider when it comes to managing your rental properties. The book is easy to read and easy to understand for the novist and seasoned investor. Great book!

I purchased the book to learn about rental properties. I thought at one time I may have been interested in renting properties. This book was very detailed in explaining how to manage rental properties and explained what licenses were required. The book also gives you examples on how to deal with customers, renters and gave resources to check out on licensing in the different states, etc.

From the Forward I wrote for Alberto's latest book:Secure IT Up!Just as organizations are waking up to the fact that information security plays an important role in business success there is a revolution on the near horizon. A revolution in the very risks that pose an existential threat to the enterprise. This came about as the natural consequence of the information revolution that began in the `90s. Every organization has realized tremendous gains in efficiency, customer acquisition, and new capabilities, all brought about by the the rise of the Internet, the Web, and the global reach they provide to anyone with a computer or cell phone. Yet, their appreciation of risk has not grown, in part due to the fact that their business and their IT infrastructure grew up in a time which, in hind sight, was relatively risk free. Most organizations have applied security controls that are sufficient to keep operations functioning. The threats of a few short years ago, viruses, worms and adware, are addressed by a regime of firewalls, anti-virus software, and patch management, all necessary but not sufficient to protect critical assets. The first time I presented on risk management to an audience of IT auditors and security practitioners I was brought up short by my first slide which is the mandatory slide on asset classification that is the basis of all formal risk management regimes. The problem with asset based risk management, in terms of IT security, is that every asset in an enterprise is mission critical just by its very existence. You will never encounter an IT administrator who would volunteer his particular server or application as "low value". Thus, the asset identification exercise leaves us where we began: the role of IT risk management is to protect all of the IT assets. It is only through integration with the business risk management program that information security can be given relevance, which is the premise of this book. Alberto Partida combines a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and the results of surveys of subject matter experts to make his argument for combining Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) with information security practices. Of the three benefits his survey work derives - stakeholder value, new business opportunities, and improved compliance - I would like to expand on the second.Demonstrated security expertise is becoming a critical factor in branding and trust building. In short, security sells. On the customer facing side a website that uses SSL, has a strong privacy statement, and is not prone to defacement or exploitation by hackers is required to attract users. On the operational side the absence of major breaches at a time when just about every industry sector has experienced its Hurrican Katrina moment, is a positive business statement that helps to establish trust with partners, customers, and stakeholders. The revolution that is fast approaching is a shift from asset-based risk management to threat-based. Thanks to the sophistication of successful campaigns like the joint Israeli-US attacks on Iran's uranium refining capabilities through the combined use of Flame-Duqu-Stuxnet enterprises are beginning to realize that even the most efficient application of traditional tools does nothing to stop the determined attacker. Attacks on business, government, and earth resource companies from nation state actors have demonstrated what a determined campaign can accomplish. It is in this new threat environment that threat-based risk management is coming into its own. The approach acknowledges that attackers will find a way in even if they have to resort to bribery, extortion, and physical breaches. What is required is to turn around the traditional approach of identifying critical assets to protect, and instead, focus on identifying the threat actors and cataloging their capabilities and intent; just as a data center located on the Gulf of Mexico may experience a risk profile change from concerns about redundancy and power costs to building up dikes when it is subjected to a storm surge. But changing to a threat-based risk management regime requires the existence of a risk management approach that already incorporates the business risks with information security, which is why this book is so timely.

Arthur Schwartz's New York City Food: An Opinionated History and More Than 100 Legendary Recipes, by Arthur Schwartz

From Publishers Weekly

Chapters on New York CityÂ’s massive ethnic influences ("The Jews," "The Italians," "The Chinese") mingle with ones on various kinds of eating establishments ("Grand Hotel Dining," "Steakhouses," "Hot Dogs") and with sections on "The Corner Bakery" and "The Golden Age of Cocktails" in this sumptuous celebration of GothamÂ’s cuisine. Schwartz, a native New Yorker, has been dishing about the cityÂ’s food for years on the radio, and here he catalogs dishes that are known the world over as well as ones that are nearly extinct. He reveals, for example, that only one bakery—in Brooklyn—still makes Nesselrode Pie, a "glorious mound of chocolate-curl-covered rum-, chestnut-, and candied-fruit-flavored Bavarian cream," and that New York Cheesecake is a descendent of the cheesecakes of Eastern Europe. He also includes concise profiles of famous New York foodies, like New York Times critic Craig Claiborne and Lutèce chef-proprietor André Soltner. Scintillating photographs of culinary delights such as Lobster Newberg (created at DelmonicoÂ’s in the mid-1870s) and Biscuit Tortoni (which, before "the tiramisu explosion," was one of the cityÂ’s most popular Italian-American desserts) complete this delightful volume.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. A treasury of well-researched, concise, delightful histories of the city's magnificent food traditions. Among the many more academic books on the history of food and Manhattan on my shelves, this un-stuffy, readable volume is one I turn to again and again for inspiration. Arthur gets it, and has done so forever. A great gift for your NYC food-fanatic friends, they'll love it!

Arthur Schwartz is the dean of NY Food Broadcasters with his (former) long running FOOD TALK show on WOR710 AM radio. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the NY food scene. In this book, he painstakingly found a way to recreate these legendary recipes.Although he is now semi-retired you can get a dose of his personality and insight in this book

I enjoyed reading this book, because it brought back memories of the great city of New York and inspired me to visit more often. Recipes are fabulous! I never made corned beef before, or Irish soda bread, but they were easy and wonderfully delicious. Great gift, as I'm sure my city daughter appreciates. A one-of-a-kind cookbook, for anyone who loves to cook. So glad I found it at Amazon.com.

I purchased this book because I am having a dinner party with the theme "I Love NYC" next month. I enjoyed reading the history of food in New York City. The descriptions and photos of famous restaurants in the city are fascinating. As other reviewers have noted, the recipe selection is limited, but I feel it is sufficient. I was able to give my guests a myriad of ideas of what to bring for the party. Beautiful hard cover book, wonderful for anyone who loves New York City!

Cool book that has a recipe for a cake my dad always talked about from when he was a kid and he said it is spot on

This book is an encyclopedic collection of stories about NY restaurants from a bygone era. It has great photos and recipes as well. Really enjoy reading and will read it again and again.

New York City Food is a cool combination of a food history of the greatest city in the world combined with recipes for those of us who hate the fact that we can't get to NYC often enough! It's NOT a restaurant guide, so careful not to try to use it as such. But it's a great read and can help you navigate the Apple's neighborhoods on your next trip. Thanks to this book, I found the "holy grail" of half-done pickles on the lower east side on my last trip!

NICE BOOK.

This was the first book by Lynn H. Blackburn that I have read, but it definitely won't be the last. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres, and Beneath the Surface did not disappoint! Beneath the Surface is the first book in her Dive Team Investigations Series. Having Dive Team Investigations as the premise of the series was so intriguing. This was a fast-paced thrilling romantic suspense novel that kept the reader guessing until the end. I was completely surprised by "whodunnit," but I would have liked to see more of a reason "why" the person committed the crimes. However, in real-life criminal cases, we don't always get the answer of "why" either. The author’s knowledge and research in the both the medical field and law enforcement was evident.I loved the long time friendship of Leigh Weston and Ryan Parker and the possibility of it turning into something more. I also loved the supporting character of Gabe and his wonderful personality. I hope he gets his own story later in the series! I can't wait to read Adam and Sabrina's story in Book 2 of the series.Lynette Eason is one of my favorite authors, and I recently read Code of Valor (Book #3 in her Blue Justice Series). She had a crossover section in part of the book where the Dive Team Members from this book assisted with a case in her book. I can't wait to go back and reread Code of Valor since I now am familiar with the Dive Team characters! I would definitely recommend Lynn H. Blackburn to fans of romantic suspense.

Beneath the Surface (Dive Team Investigations Book # 1) by Lynn Blackburn is a Total Adrenaline Rush! Blackburn is a new to me author and I am a fan! I am a voracious reader and I need to be “hooked” quickly. Blackburn had me “hooked” in the first paragraph and I was totally invested within the first five pages. This is not a novel to read in snippets or to be read at the same time as you are reading two/three other books. (There are plenty of novels that can be read this way.) This plot is complex and if you come and go in your reading too many times or read too many other books while reading this one, you could easily lose the intensity, forget who secondary characters are and miss nuances that may be key to solving the mystery.Blackburn has given readers a truly amazing romantic suspense novel. The setting is a small town with a medical center and a neighborhood with large lots and a huge lake behind the homes. Blackburn’s characters are realistic, complex, the best at their professions, working to strengthen their faith, the romance is sweet and tender and and one is pure evil! She manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire book and makes you feel as though you are running for your life. The intensity continues to rise throughout the book. There’s nothing quite as creepy as reading along and discovering the killer is from your hometown! That’s when you momentarily FORGET you’re reading fiction and start rereading the name and see if you recognize it so can ask family and friends if they recognize it! That’s REALISTIC FICTION!

I've been waiting for this book to release for a while now...and let me just say that Lynn knocked it out of the park! I loved every minute of this book - the suspense kept me on pins and needles - the characters are awesome - and the banter between Ryan and Leigh is smart and witty! I also got the Audible version of this book and it's very well done - I would definitely recommend reading or listening to this book!

Wonderfully written. Great storyline and character development. Love the faith and growth shown in the characters. Hoping Mrs. Blackburn has a long career!!! I rate her writing and stories up with Dani Pettrey, Sarah E Ladd, Roseanna M. White, Dee Henderson, T. Davis Bunn, and Tamara Alexander to name a few-all authors who not only have a good story to tell but also care about their craft and write intelligent, well thought out books that encourage and challenge the reader to go deeper in their own faith in Christ. Highly recommend and look forward to her next books!

Great book cant wait for next one. Beneath the surface held my attention from beginning to end. I love a book that shows true feelings about the way we see God. I don't always understand the way life happens but I'm so thankful He has it under His control. This book, aside from a great story also brings God to the front. I hope to read a lot more from this author.

Riveting suspense. The mystery aspect kept me guessing until the very end. I love the investigation team and look forward to more of their stories. I loved Ryan and Leigh as they draw closer to each other, while the team tries to figure out a serial killer that has Leigh in their sites. Loved it!

Lynn is a fantastic story teller! She started with a hook and kept me in suspense and guessing the entire time. I really liked the characters and how Lynn brought the spiritual growth in the characters and relationships they developed throughout the story. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series to be released.

Best book I've read in awhile. Didn't want to put it down. Grabs your attention right away. A must read for anyone. I usually can figure out who is guilty half way through a book but not this time. I actually had to read it to know. Must read!!!
