While reading this book, you are not on your seat holding a book, you are living the events you are among the characters, I do not know what name to give this style but it is amazing! The moment I started reading this book I was its prisoner, I could not put it down, for three consecutive hours I was reading until I fell asleep. Considering it is a history book full of detailed events, it is never boring. I was eager to see if when I continued reading the next day, if it will be also as exciting, it was till the end.You will live the events of those days, the Ottoman art of war compared to the Europeans, the manufacturing of cannons, the logistics, army composition, new warfare guns and first use of Cannon battery formations for the first time in history, and their effect in the thousand years old walls of Constantinople, this vivid city that was in decline and disintegration which led to its defeat. The book is so eventful that it is impossible to put down!

So often it's hard, especially in the time period in question and when dealing with conflicts involving major world religions, to find a book that is completely unbiased in it's reporting of the subject matter. This book and this author are the exception to that rule. That to begin with was what I enjoyed about this book. Mr. Crowley's position on the subject at hand is that of objective reporter of historical events. There is no personal or religious/Western bias of any kind (Not that I know anything of his personal beliefs) in this book or any sense that Mr. Crowley belongs to a "side" in the subject matter. As for the subject matter itself, the book starts as a general overview of the emergence of Islam, it's conquest of the Arab world and it's previous conflicts with the Byzantines. It then generally covers the Byzantines history in the area over the previous 400 years and the way thier policies and mutual interactions led up the events to be covered. The bulk of the book is a straight forward military history of the battle and the seige, covering historical documents as well as personal accounts of the battle from individuals who fought it. It covers the blood and guts details that you would expect to find in a medieval battle, detailing atrocieties committed with no attempt to whitewash or excuse, but also no attempt to judge from a modern perspective. All in all, one of the most enjoying and easy to read books I've read in some time.

A superbly written account of the fall of Christian Constantinople to the Muslims in AD 1453. Constantinople was chosen by the Roman Emperor Constantine as his new Christian capital in AD 324. The city was situated on a triangular piece of land, surrounded on 2 sides by water. One current was too swift to allow ships to land and besiege the city. A massive chain blocked passage across the other waterway. The city's land side was protected by a wall with towers, first built by Anthemius in AD 413. When it collapsed after an earthquake, 16,000 citizens rebuilt the wall in only 2 months, adding a 2nd wall with towers and a moat.Constantinople stood as a Christian city for over 1,000 years and was virtually impregnable to attack as long as siege equipment was limited to the power of catapults. Mehmet II was the 21-year old sultan of the Ottoman Empire. With gunpowder, massive canons, and perhaps 50,000 to 80,000 troops, he besieged the walls with constant bombardments, always with heavy losses. His sappers attempted to dig tunnels under the walls to make them collapse, but they were repelled by Greek fire when the defenders placed bowls of water on the ground and located the digging through telltale ripples. During the day, the defenders pushed ladders off the walls, hurled down rocks and fire and hot oil on attackers, and shot bullets and arrows into the enemy. At night, the Turks would go forward to gather their wounded and dead. The defenders would go out to repair walls. The city was defended by the courageous Constantine XI and no more than 8,000 soldiers. During the final assault, Mehmet had only one body of fresh troops left. The Greeks were led by Constantine himself, and the Italians by Giovanni Giustiniani, a noble of Genoa, who voluntarily fought “for the advantage of the Christian faith” and who was utterly tireless and skillful in his defense of the walls. After Constantinople fell, it rejuvenated Islam to continue its jihad into the West. And the West was left to consider how its infighting and disunity helped lead to the fall of their great city. The author is an historian and researcher of the highest order, and an exceptionally engaging writer.

As somebody who enjoys reading about this era and ottoman history in particular this book was a godsend. Mr Crowley has such a massive talent for writing in way that is a pleasure to read but also very scholarly. I liked how Crowley tried to be as objective as possible and not take sides during the siege. He paints the whole picture showing the good and bad on both sides. This was one of the most important moments in all of history and I couldn't think of somebody better to write about it.

Although the book is technically well written, it approaches being a Muslim apologetic. Crowley all but ignores the impact of the of the Latin sack of the City in the 13th century and the devastating consequences of the Great Schism while at the same time down playing the "Holy War" aspects of Mehmet conquest. Finally, the author's contempt for Greeks is palpable, to his disgrace.

Absolutely riveting story of the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed the Conqueror. Crowley explains the dispute between the churches in Rome and Constantinople, the influence of trade and money (powerhouse Venice's decision not to intervene on behalf of Byzantium after hints from Sultan Mehmed that they would not lose their enclave in the new Istanbul), the genius of Mehmed in organizing his logistics and lines of communication prior to the invasion, and the touch-and-go campaign that saw morale changing on both sides on a daily basis.A must-read book.

Review

Paul W. Kahn is a distinguished political and legal theorist who has written many important books on the American political imagination before. Yet in this case, he directly engages a thinker with whom he has slowly discovered a philosophical kinship, the great German legal and political theorist Carl Schmitt. The encounter is providential. Quite apart from providing another version of Kahn's thinking about the nature of American political life, Kahn's new book offers an extremely original and insightful proposal about what to take away from Schmitt's project of 'political theology.' This is a very attractive and imaginative project, and it is executed with brilliance and provocation. (Samuel Moyn, Columbia University, author of The Last Utopia: Human Rights in History and coeditor of Democracy Past and Future)Magisterial. (Michael Ignatieff New Republic)Kahn's work is engaging and prompts further considerations on the sacred nature of politics. (Choice)Kahn's book is fascinating, insightful, and a delight to read (Peter E. Gordon Immanent Frame)In his masterful redefinition of Carl Schmitt's work within a democratic context, Kahn's book establishes the study of political theology as the key to understanding one of the most difficult yet urgent problems of American political life―the relationship between law and popular will. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the roles of sovereignty and the sacred in the development of our national identity. (David Pan, University of California, Irvine)This is an important book, one that ought to be read by anyone interested in the relevance of Carl Schmitt's thought for contemporary democratic theory (and even more so those who believe it has none). (Adam Thurschwell Law, Culture, and Humanities)Political Theology overflows with insights and productive provocations about politics, jurisprudence, and philosophy. (Mark S. Weiner Telos)Kahn...has produced a biblically inspired reading of [Carl] Schmitt. (Muslim World Book Review)

This book is the best example how to read Carl Schmitt as universal political philosopher. All who are interesting in contemporary political theory extremely must read it.

The book is a pleasure to read: profound thinking phrased in a clear and fascinating style (it parallels Schmitt in this respect, too).A fundamental contribution to understanding Schmitt through an American mind.

This is a remarkable book. I just have a brief comment on the Kindle edition: Contrarily to most Kindle books, it does not show the page number, only the Kindle Location Number, which unfortunately makes it unquotable. Maybe this could be fixed?

A philosophical refutation of Carl Schmitt's Political Theology. Pretty well whacks Schmitt and his notion of sovereignty and exclusion that served the Nazis so well..

Truly an outstanding work of modern Political Theology. This book functions not as a review, a channeling, or an exorcism of Schmitt, but as a decision; a free act of will in the name of the re-emerging study today; ex nihilo with meaning!

Kahn begins and ends his review of Carl Schmitt's "Political Theology" with an expression of American exceptionalism. Where does it come from and is it justified? In the end, freedom is only found in a realist idea of political theology because liberalism, absent of the "exception to the rules" lacks freedom.Kahn is really explaining how national interest, a state's existence, has become the highest order. It's the realist stance that butts heads with Yoder's idolatry (putting state's interests above morality is like making the state an idol). "The popular sovereign... is the mystical corpus of the state, the source of ultimate meaning for citizens (pg 121)."My thought; Is God sovereign because He can make exception to his own laws or because He is the only one who truly understands the physical and spiritual laws of all existence? Kahn doesn't address this. When we take the idea of sovereignty, God's sovereignty, and apply it to state power, we now get Schmitt's dictum that, "All significant concepts of modern theory of the state are secularized theological concepts." And when you secularize theological concepts you may confuse the original intent. Kahn holds that political theory is not as helpful as political theology. Theology understands sacrifice while liberalism is confused by it.Can anyone apply political theology to humanity without knowing the character of God? To say that humans have freedom because we are able to act in exception to a law is not the same as Schmitt's divine creation where God worked the ultimate exception to all laws. God is all loving AND just, all the time. Kahn barely mentions the moral dualism but it has to be implied. Is the sovereign state, exercising freedom through exception, on a completely different moral plane than the individual responsibility to a loving and just God?There are a lot of great quotes and ideas in Kahn's work as he meshes politics, philosophy, law, anthropology and faith into his thesis. Kahn digs into philosophy when he discusses the origin of laws and ideas themselves. What comes first, the process that makes a law legitimate or the law itself? According to Kahn war, love, sacrifice and mercy are all exceptions to law at some level. They are counters to liberal theory. How does politics explain love and justice or law and mercy? It's good read, very heavy at certain parts which makes it difficult to skim. Take your time.

This book is on the Rorotoko list. Professor Kahn's interview on "Political Theology" ran as the Rorotoko Cover Feature on April 25, 2011 (and can be read in the Rorotoko archive).

Just when I begin to think there’s little new under the sun, along comes Helen Oyeyemi and shatters all my perceptions about how a story can be narrated. This young, brave, gifted Nigerian-born British writer is a modern day Scheherazade, weaving her tales in the form of a most unconventional love triangle: St. John Fox, a “serial killer” writer (the women in his books always die), a muse (or is she?) named Mary Foxe, and his wife Daphne. The book is loosely based on the legend of Bluebeard – a feared and shunned nobleman who murdered multiple wives after they enter his forbidden room. His last wife-to-be is able to escape her fate.In Helen Oyeyemi’s book, the misogynous Mr. Fox is confronted by Mary Foxe and delivered a challenge: to join in on her game to engage in competition, to avoid pat endings and to create a story that breaks the mold that he’s become all too comfortable with. The stories are at first slightly self-conscious and increasingly become richer and richer as the characters (Mr. Fox, Mary Foxe and Daphne) begin to connect in surprising ways, across time periods and genres. In fact, this book is hard to pigeonhole. Certainly, it is imaginative. It is also timeless: the tales amply leverage the romance and violence that are part and parcel of the best of our historic fairy tales. Mr. Fox, for example, bridges the gap with legendary foxes such as the seductive Reynardine and in one unforgettable story, becomes a fox of folklore, trying to escape his fox-like nature. The stories themselves are marvelous: a young woman with violence in her past who meets a widower who challenges her ability to trust, a highly unusual prep school for perfect husbands…each tale is a joy onto itself. The themes within the stories have a lot to say about the creative process, the challenges of mature loving, the echoes of post traumatic stress disorder, the discovery and acceptance of one’s true nature, the agony and ecstasy of taking creative and personal chances. As Helen Oyeyemi leads us from absorbent fantasy to hints of the truth of Mr. Fox’s struggling marriage and need for creative release, reality and fantasy often flirt with each other and sometimes even collide. Brava, Ms. Oyeyemi, for such an inventive and alluring book!

I picked up this book on a whim. It was on sale and I happen to really like foxes. So it was great to find out, in the end, that my purchase was worthwhile for this is a very good book.It is dark at times. And it gets confusing. If you like to passively read a story, and don't like a little confusion then this will probably not be a good book for you.The author tells her story with vignettes, so you are easily pushed on from one chapter to the next. However, these vignettes are not all chronological, and you do have to orient yourself a few times. Some are stories written by one of the main characters St. John Fox, other chapters are of his life and some are from the perspective of his muse Mary. Despite the changing perspective, the book was written beautifully. The stories with little bearing on the plot have actually stayed with me more than the overall story.I don't think this is the kind of book you will want to bring to the beach however. If you are looking for a light summer read maybe look elsewhere. This book is best enjoyed on a cloudy day with a warm cup of chai tea. At least I think so!

This is my second read, and I'm still not sure what this book is about, but I'm charmed by it. It's creative, magical, and engaging -- quirky, too. Who is the author? Who is speaking? Who is being written about? I'll have to read it a third time to figure it out.

Mr. Fox was a fascinating read. Challenging, in a good way, and unexpected. Dark and delightful.

Oyeyemi has created a fascinating plot and style that captures the reader immediately! The book moves quickly, almost like a mystery (and, maybe it belongs in that genre). I was ready to re-read it almost after I had finished!!

The author takes her tone from European fairy tales, the abrupt, matter-of-fact way of relating nightmarish, absurd narratives. And if you grew up loving this style, as I did, you'll fall into her stories and forget about everything around you until you've devoured the whole thing, fur, skin, and bones.

Amazing book for those who appreciate artistic and somewhat confusing narrative

Oyeyemi is very possibly the best living writer of literary fiction. _Mr. Fox_ rewards serious readers and any readers with patience and willingness to sit with ambiguity for sections at a time. It's also enormously fun, lively, energetic: allowing readers to inhabit fictional realities/real fictions with high stakes for their interpretations of the novel and of their own imaginations' value. The novel would teach well in undergraduate and graduate-level courses, but it also makes for heady book club discussions with friends who might usually only pick up fiction for pleasure.

Patience is not only a virtue, but also--in the case of this book--a joy. I had to read a good 25 percent of it before I could really get into it. Why? The cast of characters is very large, and it takes that long to introduce them and tell each of their stories in a compelling way. Here's the premise of the plot: The book follows the lives of the residents of London's Pepys Lane, who live in homes that are now—astonishingly to some of them—worth well more than $1 million British pounds. For months, the residents have been receiving postcards with a photo of their home on one side and the words "We Want What You Have" on the other. It takes a good while before any of them take this seriously, most thinking it is some kind of real estate marketing scheme. But it's not. And since the characters are experiencing so many of life's problems both big and small, most of them think something along the lines of: "Ha! You can have what I have. Take it!"However, the strength of the story is not in the plot. It is in the characters, and the fact that author John Lanchester successfully juggles them all and fully engages the reader in all their fates is kind of amazing. This is an expert writer at work, folks. The characters are so diverse! Some (but not all) of them include a dying 82-year-old woman, a young family with two children, too much money and too much entitlement, a 17-year-old football (soccer) phenom from Senegal who barely speaks English and a Muslim family who runs a convenience store at the end of the street. Also included in the cast of characters are people who serve or somehow interact with the residents on Pepys Lane. This book is filled with wisdom and emotion and what it feels like to be truly human—no matter our age, ethnicity or status in life. It is a joy to read!P.S. The Kindle version is extremely helpful. The X-Ray feature is quite useful for keeping track of the myriad cast of characters, while the dictionary is an expert source at deciphering the British slang that is peppered throughout the story.

This is a book about a road in London, or more precisely, about the people who live live and work there. It is also about London at the time of the financial meltdown of 2008. This may sound dry and boring, but believe me it is not.Not only has Lanchester chosen a wide range of interesting characters to focus on, but he also has a conversational writing style that is at once easy to read yet gets to the meat of the matter every time. To make the story even more riveting, there is a mystery underlying all the action. A harassing postcard stalker plagues the residents and adds a layer of unease to each of their already uneasy lives. This is not a book for someone who likes action and adventure, but rather for someone who enjoys delving behind the facade of people and places unlike himself. I found it fascinating. I will keep an eye out for John Lanchester in the future.

Anyone who has ever strolled a neighborhood as the day is ending and lamps briefly illuminate interiors before the curtains are closed, has wondered about the lives of the people who live inside. The author of Capitol swings wide each door and invites us in to sit comfortably and observe, unseen, the real people residing there, meeting their daily challenges, the joys, the stress, the absurdity of modern life just as we do. Enthralling!

I first heard about this novel on Felix Salmon's Slate Money podcast. Felix cited it as one of the only novels that looked at the 2008 financial crisis from the British viewpoint. This is not quite accurate. The book takes place at the same time, but there is very little about financial goings-on. But I am not criticizing John Lanchester for the book he didn't write. In fact, I am not criticizing this book at all. At first, I checked this book out of the library. Within the first 20 pages I knew I'd want to take my time with it, so I immediately returned it and bought the Kindle version. And I'm glad about that."Capital" has been criticized for being too much like "Bonfire" and "Love Actually." I contend this seriously underestimates the enjoyment you will derive from this novel. Lanchester has a great eye for the London of 2008, cross-cutting among various social classes. I agree with the other reviewer here who says the book could have been titled "London" rather than "Capital." The reviewer who wrote about the two meanings of the word "capital" is also correct. This is a book not just about the major characters but also about a city and even a country. If you are balking about paying full Kindle price for this book, I advise getting over that. The writing and insights guarantee, in my opinion, that you will be getting great value for money..or maybe I should say "capital."

I typically hold back on giving anything five out of five stars, but this novel is a credit to modern literature. The author writes descriptively well and exhibits the ability to create distinctive characters from various professions, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. The story itself revolves around people who live or work on/near Pepys--pronounced "peeps," I believe--Street in London, England. The neighborhood is an established yet recently tony region of the city. The novel begins in 2007, before the big financial crash. Some key players in the story are an investment banker and his wife, their nanny (Russian?), the Polish laborer doing work on the street, an African meter maid, an English cop, a Pakastani shopkeeping family, an African soccer player and an English avant-garde artist along with his relatives. Their stories all intertwine when the people of Pepys Street repeatedly receive postcards and DVDs that say "We want what you have." Great story with great characters.
