The author has done a good job of explaining practical Timber Frame construction. There are fewer references to the art of traditional joinery with its demanding craftsmanship to create interlocking structural members. The book focuses of the "Timber Frame Effect" married with the modern imperatives of economy, code compliance, ease-of-use and application of new technologies. The author effectively communicates where and how the old and the new come together to create beautiful and enduring structures.

While the information was relevant, it was very dated. I expected more information about fasteners and assembly and was left wanting. Will be looking for something more recently published.

Helpful reading!

Great book, however the condition it arrived in was not. The first 15 pages of the first chapter fell out almost immediately.

The author has built an interesting earth covered home. He used heavy timbers and simple joinery but ... I hope to build more traditionally styled outbuildings and found little germane advice in his treatise.

So like many other people I was interested in Timber framing but not so interested in the massive amount of work needed to be done by hand prior to putting the building up. I picked up this book because it sounded like the perfect book for me. I found it way too general in all. The book was interesting, but certainly not enough that I feel like I could go build a Timberframe for the rest of us with. I found most of the pictures and topics were taken from other books. If you are looking for a good book buy A Timber Frame Workshop by Steve Chappell. Most of this stuff came from there anyways.

Very informative in an understandable format.

I had heard about Rob Roy and wanted to check him out, but I found this book to be utter garbage. Framing must not be his strong point. He vaguely describes some glossary terms, like "shear" or "load"... and delivers little else than that. Seriously, there are so many good books on framing out there, don't waste your money on this knockoff.

Few places on Earth must have appeared more glamorous than the Imperial Court of Austria-Hungary in 1889. A series of magnificent palaces in and around Vienna, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, were stage sets for hundreds of elegantly dressed courtiers and ministers dedicated to the service of the couple who ruled the giant multi-ethnic empire. Lesser members of the Habsburg Dynasty and thousands of other aristocrats made up a glittering Society that revolved around that same couple, Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, and his beautiful wife Elisabeth. Second only to the Emperor and Empress were the Crown Prince and Princess, Rudolf and Stephanie.Yet the glamour and magnificence were only a facade. The Empire was troubled and increasingly ramshackle, shaken by rising nationalism among its many minorities. The Court and Society were riddled with scandal and intrigue, and the Emperor and Empress led separate lives, his devoted to ceaseless routine and duty, hers to restless traveling. And Crown Prince Rudolf, who had once seemed full of promise, was now a sick and disappointed man, scheming against his father and indulging in a series of empty love affairs while ignoring his wife Stephanie, whom he had infected with gonorrhea and rendered barren after the birth of one child, a daughter. In early 1889 Rudolf was attempting to put an end to his latest affair, a romp with a 17 year old girl with an ambitious mother from a social climbing family, Baroness Mary Vetsera. Rudolf's entanglement with Mary Vetsera was his last. In late January their two bodies were found in a bedroom at the hunting lodge at Mayerling, apparently the result of a murder-suicide in which Rudolf had first shot Mary and then, hours later, himself. The tragedy at Mayerling has gone down in history as either a story of thwarted romance or as a darker tale of political vengeance. Now Greg King and Penny Wilson, in a meticulously documented and well written history, have come as close as anyone can to unraveling what really happened at Mayerling and why.Twilight of Empire is divided into four sections. The first details Crown Prince Rudolf's miserable childhood and early adult years. Deprived of contact with either parent and forced through an unimaginative and harsh education,he grew up to be intelligent but flighty. He lent his support to politicians and editors attempting to liberalize Austria-Hungary's creaking government, but gained nothing except enmity and distrust from his father. He spent most of his time in a series of love affairs with women from all classes of Society, eventually including Mary Vetsera. Mary was a pretty young teenager who nowadays would be labeled a juvenile delinquent. Her ambitious mother and family, anxious to be admitted into Viennese High Society, encouraged her brazen affair with the Crown Prince. Part II deals with the events of late January 1889,when Rudolf found himself embroiled in political intrigues that bordered on high treason. He was called before his father and berated for his disloyalty and for his carryings on with Mary. That, along with the general hopelessness of his life in general, caused Rudolf to take Mary to his hunting lodge at Mayerling. In Part III we read about the immediate aftermath of the murder-suicide as the Imperial Court scrambled to make sense of and cover up the most sensational aspects of what had happened, while rumors swirled throughout Vienna and the rest of Europe. And in Part IV King and Wilson do a superb job of analyzing the available material (many official records dealing with Mayerling have been destroyed) and coming up with a plausible explanation for what really happened on the night of January 29-30, 1889.Twilight of Empire makes it clear that Mayerling was not a fairy tale gone awry. The events leading up to it and the subsequent actions taken by the Court and Government were for the most part tawdry, causing controversy and confusion that has lasted for more than a century. None of the principal actors, excepting Crown Princess Stephanie and Rudolf's sisters Gisela and Marie Valerie, behaved with any real dignity or honor. And as the Epilogue makes clear, most of the people involved in some way with Mayerling went on to lead unpleasant and difficult lives. King and Wilson's account should become the standard reference on the tragedy as well as an important addition to late nineteenth century European history.

"Mayerling". The mere word is redolent of forbidden love, joint suicide, and...Omar Sharif as Prince Rudolf and Catherine Deneuve as Mary Vetsera, doomed lovers who died in each other's arms. The truth, however, is much more prosaic and the lovers a lot tawdrier, as told in Greg King and Penny Wilson's superb new history, "Twilight of Empire: The Tragedy at Mayerling".The "Empire" referred to in the book's title is the Hapsburg empire; now by 1889 a mere shadow of its original self. Comprising Austria and its unwilling partner, Hungary, the two countries fought like cats-in-a-bag, over everything political, religious, and societal. Ruled over by Emperor Franz Joseph, who had been on the throne since 1848; by 1889, Franz Joseph and his heir, Rudolf were at sixes-and-sevens. The father refused to share any power or responsibility with his son, whom he regarded as weak and easily led. And that description of the Crown Prince was largely true. His defective personality was the result of bad parenting, drug addiction, severe inbreeding in the Hapsburg/Wittelsbach gene pools, and the effects of the gonorrhea he acquired through indiscriminate sexual adventures. Countess Mary Vetsera, his 17 year old inamorata, was a vain, silly girl from a disreputable family, whose mother was basically pimping out her young daughter to eligible men. Throw in Rudolf's attempt at gaining the Hungarian throne in a coup - which failed - and Mary's possible pregnancy, and you have all the angst for a bad ending. That "bad ending" took place over a two day period in late January, 1889, at Mayerling, a hunting lodge a little southwest of Vienna. Both were found dead, and from that point the lying, name-calling, and cover-ups by most involved began. The story of the joint suicide as a lovers' tragedy began, too, and has been told and retold in both books and films. King and Wilson get to the facts of the case, blowing the "romantic" aspects completely out of the water. They are very good writers and their book is a wonderful read. Just don't be too disappointed if you're a romantic!

Twilight of Empire is a fascinating, and well researched book on the tragedy at Mayerling. I also found the desciptions of Vienna at that time very interesting, the people in the book were interesting read about. I enjoyed learning more about Mayerling, and Austrian history, and also about the end of the Habsburgs which ended a few years later .

I read this book in two days. I had a hard time leaving it. I read a great deal of Euro history and sometimes the books are pedantic or boring. Not this one! I recommend this wonderful book to readers who are interested in Euro history, royalty, plots, and what could easily be the actual truth.

This past week's WALL STREET JOURNAL had a review of this book which sounded so fascinating that I immediately bought the Kindle version. The book is every bit as fascinating as the review described.Briefly, this is a true tale of incest, murder, and intrigue near the final days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I knew the Habsburgs were inbred but I never knew the extent to which that was true. Read this and you, too, can learn about them. The story line is about Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria-Hungary, his daliences with various women, palace intrugue, an abitious young tart, pre-World War I politics, and incest within the Habsburgs. If you like novels, this work of non-fiction reads much like a novel. If you like history, you will like this book.

Read this book if you are a software developer. The book is clearly intended to get people in software to read more of their peers more outstanding writings/opinions on the matter. Why? Simply put software engineers and the family of similar roles are highly dependent on good communication, however good writing skills are seemingly deficient in the field. By reading (and ideally going on and writing) these samples the author intends get people to consider what good communication (primarily persuasive writing) looks like. The best part is how wildly strange some of the opinions in the book are. Consider an essay where the thesis is that check-styles should through compile time errors. I mentioned this essay to some of my colleagues and it clearly sparks debate, most people disagree with the statement and have great arguments.Zeal is bountiful in the software industry yet many people are shy to start or don't know what good writing looks like applied to this field. So if you are a developer or manager in the industry do yourself (and teammates) a favor and read/share this book. If you enjoy this book, you'll definitely enjoy the author's own blog joelonsoftware.com and other writers on the topic. It's the good kind of rabbit hole.

This is a collection of 29 essays about software development, selected and introduced by Joel Spolsky (of Joel on Software fame).I've been a regular reader of Joel's site for many years, and many of the themes Joel has been writing about (social software, outsourcing, the dangers of measuring the performance of individuals using simple bug metrics, and sales and marketing of software) are reflected in the included essays. Many of the authors have already published books of their own (Bruce Eckel, Paul Graham, Mary Poppendieck and Ron Jeffries come to mind), but regardless of whether they've been published before or not, the writing is consistently good. This isn't surprising, since according to the back cover, the goal of the book is to show-case good writing, and since Joel himself is a very good writer.I had read a few of the essays before the book was published (and in the case of "Great Hackers" by Paul Graham, I had actually listen to it, thanks to ITConversations), but most of them were new to me. They cover a lot of different angles on software development, from how to format your code, to forced overtime. The best essays in my opinion are "The Pitfalls of Outsourcing Programmers" (a short but well argued piece on why outsourcing many times isn't such a good idea), "Strong Typing vs. Strong Testing" (on the benefits of automatic unit tests) and "Style is Substance" (why not standardizing on one coding style - why not indeed).Actually, as I look through the contents to pick which essays I liked the most, it is hard to choose. Many of them are really good. I have to pick a few more: "Measuring Testers by Test Metrics Doesn't" (with a great example of exactly how this can create a lot of extra work without adding any value), and the cleverly named "How Many Microsoft Employees Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb?" (explaining how a seemingly small change ripples through a big company). Also, honorable mentions to Clay Shirky's two entries about social software (I had read both before, but they are very insightful and worth re-reading) and to Eric Sink's about software sales and marketing. The least interesting for me were "Processing Processing" (musings on the nature of the web) and "Passion" (about passion for programming, which is a good subject, but this essay just didn't work for me). There are also a couple of entries in the "Humor" category. The second essay is a hilarious send-up of the crappy Windows search, and the last essay made me laugh aloud several times. It's a quick tour of Ruby (the programming language), but with lots of stream-of-consciousness side tracks. And cartoon foxes! Not to be missed.Joel's introductions are generally good and add to the experience. There is also a liberal sprinkling of footnotes, where Joel explains certain names and terms. Mostly this is OK, but it goes over-board sometimes. Given that this presumably is a book the will mostly be read by software developers, do we really need explanations of API-call, iTunes or Skype?I suspect this collection will be followed by a "The Best Software Writing II", and I'm looking forward to reading that one too. By the way, since all the essays were culled from the web, you can probably find all of them just by surfing. But for me, it was worth it to have them all collected in book-form.To summarize, a varied collection of interesting and well written essays on software development. Recommended.

If you're interested in the business of software, Joel Spolsky is a name that should definitely be on your bookshelf. He is smart, experienced, and has a wealth of knowledge to share. His writing style is plain-spoken and filled with interesting anecdotes that hold the reader's attention while he teaches them something good.

I reread this book the other day, and I had forgotten how much I love it. Two words: Eric Sink. Eric is an incredibly good writer, who of course, has at least one of his own books as well. Anyway, this compilation is terrific.

It is very help for the software company! If you can implement some of the tips, your company will change in deep I think!

Being familiar with Joel's website, and judging by the title of the book and the excepts I had seen I bought this book expecting it to be about software development. Success and failure stories of projects, designs, development, testing and deployments. What works for people? how much abstraction is good? What testing methods and tools work well and how to use them? Stuff like that. What I found however is that this collection of stories and essays has very little to do with software writing. It would be more correct to entitle is "The best of writing by people loosely related to software development." While some of it does go over some great aspects of development (The articles on social software are excellent!) there are some article that are completely assinine. For example a chapter where the author describe the best 'hacker' recruitment style, including all the offerings of your mother's basement. The author also goes to great extents to chastise anyone who isn't a python developer. There are also many articles on managing intelligence production teams(Software development, testing, deploying, etc...) and while these article were neat, they had nothing to do with the actual writing of software. Over all I was greatly disappointed in the book, and it would have been a complete waste had it not been for the (very few) burried gems in the rough and the social software articles.

Little of value. Sold it almost immediately. His "Joel on Software," which I kept, is much more interesting.
